Will ShipSim even run on Windows 98?
« on: August 16, 2009, 15:16:21 »

Well, will it run on Windows 98? I am thinking about putting that OS on my PC I am building, so an answer would be great. Also, can you still buy that version of windows?

Hm...I still think I have a few ways I can still get it, but does anyone know if ShipSim will run on it? Will it require less ram?

if you read the system requirements the oldest system you can have is windows 2000, you can always try it but i wouldn't expect much :-\

What about MS-DOS? (Joking, I wouldn't even try that). I wish Terry was here, he would know for sure. Terry, we need you! *Shines the marmite signal into the sky*

I have a Windows 98 Machine in the loft. But it just wouldn't run SS because the hardware isn't good enough. Never mind about installing it with the small HD it has. ;D

I think the best OS to use for SS08 is Windows XP. As the OS itself isn't resource heavy, which allows more resources for the sim and probably get better gameplay than the same hardware but with Vista.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with Windows 98.. :-\

Oh. I am reading that Win98 has issues with HD with more than a certain amount of memory, so I probably should go with XP.

Well, I think there is a certain amount of hardware resouces an OS can take, much more so for the older OS like '98. Like Windows Vista 32bit can only read 3 GB of ram.
I think you're going to have search the internet on what hardware '98 can take.

I have no doubt in my mind that VSTEP would have atleast tried it on '98, but for it not to be included in the minimum specs then it's very doubtful it would work, I'm afriad. :-\

it took all that to tell you it wont work :P its not in the system requirements, so it working is highly un likely... XP is good though its becoming outdated little by little with vista having nearly run its course already and windows 7 out to the pc makers :P

Simply put, Only xp and vista are supported.

High chances things will go wrong, IF it even runs at all..  I do not recommend it. And why would you anyway?

You're not going to make a machine that is under spec good enough, certainly not by degrading your OS, you're actually making it even less compatible with the requirements..  ;D

Why would you ever want to install windows 98 any more. Compared to today's operating systems it truly is horrendous. At the very LEAST use windows XP...

Good point Paul. Thanks for posting on my topic, you are an SS Dev it is an honor! I have one question that I hope you won't mind me asking, what do you do in the development? Are you a 3d artist?

You do a great job! (Assuming you helped with the ShipSim, and some of the other VSTEP sites!

Thanks for your 'to the point' logic. :p

Very nice, you helped with the front page I assume? Do you use coding like HTML and Javascript, PHP? Or do you use web building programs? I love coding it myself.

If you were involved in direct game development, another question I would ask would be, "What stage is Extremes in?" ;D

I'm curious if it reached Alpha Testing/Beta Testing/Quality Assurance yet....

That is a very good question that everyone want's to know. ;D

Yet we won't know, before you know it it'll be on shop's shelves.. :P

But considering VSTEP said Q1 of 2010... I'm not sure..
