importand note for a sketchup vessel to VS
« on: August 15, 2009, 19:35:25 »

hello all, i recently have some VS converting requests where i need to convert a sketchup model to VS,
(i hope i placed this topic on the right place, if not, sorry  :-X)

i think im not the only one who converts requests by users, but i noticed something in almost every model that makes it converting/optimizing the ship quite a job.

what sketchup modellers can do to make an perfect optimized model is the following things:

1. wrong sided faces:

this is the most common problem in a sketchup model, especialy for users who are new to modelling in sketchup.
the colors of the faces display a front side (white) and a back side (blue) if you go ahead and model and reverse not a single face, you will get a result like the right object. the best thing to do is to make (before painting) your entire object one color which is white or blue (im used to use blue and reverse it later on as one single object).

2. polygon writing:

this needs a lot of cpu power. and a lot of attention optimizing it as a converter,
using a texture is much better for the converter and for the cpu processor.

if you don't know how to texture, no problem, most time the converter is experienced enaugh to add a image himself.

3. too detailed cilinders:

a cilinder is not needed to look extreme detailed, especialy for complex models.
when making a circle, the default rotation segments is 24, to fix this do the following:

1. right click on the edge line of the circle
2. choose ''propeties''
3. change the number 24 to any number you like
4. click on OK
5. pull out the circle, and you have a better optimized cilinder

4. the last one, thin walls:

like i told at #1, each face has only one visible side.
when making a wall/railing like the right example, you will only see one side.
if you make a wall thicker you will see both sides, and there's no optimizing needed.

i hoped this helped to the sketchup modellers.

if this topic is placed on the wrong section, please move it to the right section  ;)

good luck!
