Hi everyone I've been having a problem with the Ocean star when I try to turn left it turns right but the azipod turns left, what's happening

I have the 1.4.2 update Any suggestions!

You see that little bolt in azimuth control, that shows where to tendency is going. If you turn controls right ship turn leht. Understand?

Hello All,

Think of it as the controlehandle of the outboard-engine on a small dinghy:

if you push it to the SB-side, the litlle boat will go to the left (port)

if you push it to the PORT-side, the litlle boat will go to the right (starboard)

The same as on a little sailingboat, it can't be that hard to understand.

You are pushing / steering the aft of the ship (Ocean Star) in one direction;
the bow will then go to the opposit direction.

One thing that puzzles me about the Ocean Star: allthough she has azipods, she also has reverse throttle..
Is it normal for this kind of propulsion..?
I suppose it's easier to reverse thrust than to turn the azipod..

As we see the difference in handling between her (OS) and the Bugsier2 it is not logical.

The Ocean Star was already in Add-on ship 2006, so the operation/dynamics could be up for an update.

Sorry , I realy don't know; I'm to old / have no personal experiance.

My "Schottel" background says there is no need, unless the turning speed of the pod is a factor.

thanks everyone, so it is normal that on the OC and the bugsier2 the stearing is different. I thought there was a glitch. now I know its normal

Well, the main difference between the propulsion systems on board "B2" and "OS" is, that the cruise liner has a podded drive, so there is an electric engine turning the prop and you can easily change the turning direction of an electric motor. The tug has two strong diesel engines inside and a special gear connects them with the props outside. There is a hydraulic clutch inbetween, but there is not reversing gear. The reason is, that a working tug used to have it's full power allways and immidiately as well. In that case there is no Schottel working, it is a very similar system, made by Rolls-Royce instead.

The confusion about the steering of these ships in the game, is the controlehandle for steering/throttle.

They look the same on both ships, but the working is different.

The confusion/"problem" is the throttle scale and the 2 colors on the handle.

Logic for the OS, but NOT for the B2; where 1 scale and 1 color would be enough.

More experianced ShipSim players who love these ships, will have found there ways with these controles, I think.

It is the new members/players who are confused, confronted with the controles the first time.

They are bringing back the discussion about it, over and over again; understandable, I guess.

We'll have to wait and see what the next version brings. I hope to see these ships again there !

I think that the real problem many players have with these two ships is that the azipod drives on "Ocean Star" are at the stern and the drives on "Bugsier 2" are forward of amidships. This means that altering the direction of the drives on each ship has the opposite effect as the ships pivot roughly at the centre of their length. A bit like the difference between a tiller and a steering wheel as was mentioned earlier. You put the tiller to port to turn to starboard ("OS") & you turn the wheel to starboard to turn to starboard ("B2"). Apart from that eviss has it perfectly correct.

Actually when you think about it it's more like one of these because the entire engine doesn't move.

Well, in fact the entire engine does move.

If you stop and think about it the azipod contains the engine, an electric motor. The diesels just provide power for the generators which provide the electricity.

...and the actual pods have the props in front as a towing, not a pushing one...

Here is a picture of the drives on "Freedom of the Seas". The centre one is fixed and a "Pusher" and the outer two are, as Bottman says, "towing" motors which can each rotate by 360⁰
