Norwegian Epic in the Water!!!!!
« on: July 20, 2009, 05:42:12 »

Big news, Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship, Norwegian Epic, was put in the water for the first time on July 11th, 2009. Now I know I'm going to get a bunch of comments that say things like "That ship is SO ugly!" and "Just another ugly ship in a long line of ugly ships." But I think Epic and all NCL ships, are very good looking. I think why everyone thinks they are so ugly is they just aren't very traditonal looking. They are more retro and perhaps people don't really like this style. I also like the Freestyle concept NCL follows. I've cruised on NCL, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean and NCl is by far my favourite. I plan to take my next cruise with them. Here are some pictures of the new ship. You've heard my opinon on Epic and now I'd love to here yours. Perhaps instead of just saying if you think the ship is ugly or not maybe say why you think they are ugly or not. This might make for a more intresting discussion.

You got the bit about comments saying it's ugly right. One of the ugliest cruise ships ever that. (In my opinion)

I personally think the reason it is so ugly is because of all that rubbish they've put above the bridge, the funnels and the stern.

Otherwise I think it could be a pretty well balanced good looking ship! :)

We are all familiar with modular construction, yes?

Well... This is modular design. The hull and lower structure was designed by Norwegian-Boat-Designers-Ltd. he upper structure was designed by class 4, A small school, Oslo.

It reminds me a little of that badly rebuilt Al Salam ferry... Still people go on cruise ships for where they go and their facilities, not whether the ships look good.

I also like the Freestyle concept NCL follows.

If you'll compare it to the "Freestyle concept" by wich Captain Titanic/Gloat were making his models - you'll agree that even his ships were better than that.

In fairness though, I suspect there was a little bit more technical design went into developing this ship than anything freestyle on sketchup...

wow I saw this pic on another topic and I thought it was edited and of coarse meant as an joke. It is one of the most ugly things I've ever seen as far as ships go, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't be a nice ship to travel with.

I wish Gloat was here...  That's a perfect ship for him to model to win the "uglier than ugliness" contest! ;D

It wouldn't look so bad without the bridge stuff...

If you cover the top bit it just looks like a normal modern cruise ship...

Yeah, but like has been said before, when this ship is finished and people sail on her, they won't think "Wow this ship is ugly" They'll be thinking "Time to hit up the buffet and then... no way, they have three waterslides and a hot tub? No way!!!"  ;D

Oh and here's a link to NCL's website about Epic. It has more pictures and info on the features of the ship. Looks cool, I'd like to cruise on her when she's complete.
http://ncl.worldmedia.net/
And a link to her deck plans:

Click the slider on the bottum when you see the 3D graphic. You can rotate the modle 360 degrees!

It looks like it could easily be capsized by a large wave or strong winds.

From that article: I bet the supermarket could capsize if all oversized passengers of the "Motel 6" will go to it's top floor.  ;D

the Norwegian ships are nice, i've been on the dawn and the service is great. This ship i'm not so keen on its looks, kinda wierd with such a high extension above the bridge. But you can't judge a book by its cover :D

YeaH I sailed on the Norwegian Sun, (As I've probably said many many times. :)) But yeah, the service was great and the cabins were very roomy for the price I paid. We flew in the night before the ship sailed and NCL put us up in a beuatiful 5 star hotel (Since we had booked our flight through them). The cabins on the ship were just as nice (if not nicer) Than the ones at the hotel. 7 days in the caribbean later my only complaint is that the band that played on the pool deck only knew about 3 songs!

I remember going on an old Dover Calais ferry; I think it was the Invicta. Quite an ugly ship from the outside, but looked modern and smart from the inside (at least it was THEN!).

So, as you say don't judge a ship by its lines  :D
