does the ship sail with it's own power, or somehow towed with an winch or something across?

Some official data about the vessel:
http://forms.cta-otc.gc.ca/sins-cvis/naivre-ship_eng.cfm?ShipID=1000021

The fact that it goes at 5 kts under its own diesel power would indicate that it is self powered.

But in some o fthe pictures (below) it does look as though it is attached by chains. Perhaps it is self-powered but uses chains on both banks to keep it on position. Not sure, though.

It's a underwater cable ferry power by CAT C-12 and it's home of the world's first underwater cable ferry. ;D

Don't the 24 cars on the deck get very wet when it submerges?

I seem to remember going on the Kingsteignton ferry (in Devon) many years ago. It still runs as far as I know. That had/has an underwater chain (so that other shipping can pass it).

I thought that this was not uncommon. Or am I geting the wrong end of the conversation?

As far as know it is. Are ferries are single cable in the center of the ferry. That ferry is a dual cable ferry. :)

William Pitt was a Canadian engineer from the Kingston Peninsula of New Brunswick. He was the designer of the first Gondola Point Ferry on the Kennebecasis River. This ferry was an underwater cable ferry, and Pitt believed that the cable required for the ferry was too heavy and bulky to lay out using a boat, an obstacle which prevented others from making such a ferry. He overcame this, however, by laying the cable on the frozen surface of the river at winter, and waiting for the ice to melt.

Ironically, he later died from very serious injuries obtained by falling into the machinery of the ferry. One of the two cable ferries currently operating at Gondola Point is named the "William Pitt II" in his honor :2thumbs:

Here is pics of the cable.

There are/were a number of cable-guided ferries within a few tens of miles of my home.
The Buena Vista ferry is self propelled by a diesel engine on its upriver side.

The BV ferry is guided by an overhead cable instead of an underwater one.
