Hi

Have you guys already watched the new programme called whale wars? I think it's a great job what they are doing.... But what do you think about it?

To be honest I think Sea Shepard are just terrorists...

The crew of Steve Irwin claimed it was a "collision" but that vid shows they clearly rammed the whaling ship. Of course, I don't like the whalers doing what they do either...it's a big debate $:-\$

Hmm.. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing..

I think the cause is a worthy one, and for sure their hearts are in the right place, but their methods are sometimes a bit questionable.

I know there is no other way to stop these whalers that are in a grey area between legal research and illegal whaling, but they do go very far at times, endangering the lives of all involved..

And I was a bit surprised at the lack of experience and skill of the people they take with them into such dangerous waters. Without proper training, it's a bit unfair to take advantage of the enthusiasm of the crewmembers to take them onboard such dangerous 'missions', to be honest.

Sure, they tell them the dangers beforehand, but still.. I think their will to do right and devotion to the whales and other marine animals, makes them too easy to recruit and use for their - sometimes - pirate like actions.

In the end, something has to be done, I very much agree, but I do have my doubts as to wether all the stuff they do can be justified all the time.. $:-\$

Many different opinions, although I still think that they're doing a great job. Those animals are just innocent so someone needs to take some interaction. The Japanese calls it ''Research''. Like I said there are many different opinions. For me the sea shepherd is a hero!

It's a new program on Discovery or National Geographic.

I recorded the first episode and I have the 2nd episode on record for tomorrow (Monday).

watching the first episode made me realise why they do it, however what they do to stop it is just wrong.
They even fly a pirate-like flag!

The founder of Sea Shepard was also a founder of Greenpeace, but was voted out of Greenpeace because he was and still is, reckless..
I do think Greenpeace goes about it better than Sea Shepard, though. Greenpeace protest peacefully, sea shepard goes in with all guns drawn with acid bombs(well so to speak) willing to have a war.. It's stupid how they say "This should be done by the authorities, but they don't do it, so we will." But the fact is, sea shepard hasn't got authority on the waters, in a matter of fact, I see their actions childish and pathetic, they go around thinking they have authority when they don't.

The time will come when a navy ship will go to them and arrest them for pirating (Yes sea shepard do try and board whalers, hence the RIB's onboard the Steve Irwin.), ramming and causing harm to others.

Till you know how reckless Sea Shepard are, then you know why Greenpeace voted out the founder of Sea Shepard and Greenpeace out of the Greenpeace party. Plus also why Greenpeace ignore communications from Sea Shepard out at sea.

I don't mind Greenpeace, but sea shepard go to far.. But that's my thoughts.

Who know's.. They probably built the bow to a very strong structure and using strong material..

But I guess they repair the ship themselves once they get back to Australia..

I would think they would tell us about it in a episode where they ram a whaler..

I reckon they might not show the most 'incriminating' stuff on TV.. It's all sugarcoated to make them look like environmentalist superheroes.. Well..I only saw one episode though, so I cannot judge yet, but it looks that way though to me.

I think Discovery channel picked a wrong topic to make a series about here, I think advertising this piracy is not very wise. Most of us would see the whale saved, sure... But that doesn't mean these people are above the law.

sea shepard isn't even allowed to enter our waters, or at least the founder, if the whale is in danger of being outnumbered I think it should be stopped, but if not, I don't think it is much more different than killing pigs.

The Japanese surely need to kill those whales for scientific research, (and to avoid the ban..)
I'm sure they will listen to reason at the next whaling conference, the former conferences were very succesfull..

Ah.. scientific research.. always such a good bit of ammo for the environmentalists..

Didn't I see one of those new Sea Shepard recruits saying something like "Even if it is legal scientific research, we shouldn't allow anyone to experiment on animals at all, it should be banned", after which he took out a bottle of Dramamine to battle the seasickness, and completely ignoring the fact that this was tested on animals in scientific research.. ah those double standards..

Ok guys, I don't know if they made a second season of Whale Wars, or if you guys in Europe are just getting Season 1 now.....anyway, I saw most of the first season late last year, and I have to say.....as much as I don't like whthe whalers are doing, the actions of the Sea Shepard border on piracy. Honestly, I believe that now that the world media has had a chance to see what is going on in that area, either the US or Australian Navy is going to get involved. With the threat of modern piracy what it is, the question is : Who gets detained/arrested? The 'illegal whalers' hurting innocent animals, or the ship that sends zodiac assault craft to illegally board/damage the whaling companies' property. My opinion is that the Sea Shepard will be shut down, if nothing else, to ensure the safety of the volunteers. If they refuse to stop operations, the involved governments will probably take steps to prohibit the ship from their waters and harbors. I mean, really? After the pirate episodes off the Somali coast, and all the talk about armed guards on the ships, what's to prevent the Japanese from using armed guards in the same fashion to drive off the Sea Shepard's attacks. I think the US/Australian governments need to step in, before some not so innocent people get hurt doing something they've been led to believe isn't wrong. This is just my opinion though, thoughts?

Completely agree.

Though the whalers won't get prosecuted, as they are claiming they are killing the whales for scientific research (Unless proven otherwise), though the Sea shepard will most likely get prosecuted..

My standpoint on this is, if there is a law that say's no whaling unless it's for research, then Navies should go and enforce the laws.
That way you wouldn't get lunatics trying to enforce the law themselves (Like sea shepard)..

Same with all this pirating in Somali, the Navies should stop that, I've heard that a French Naval boat has captured some pirates and the US Navy has done something, but not enough..

BTW, I think the series in europe is the 1st series..

me my wife and my daughter are all vegan and we think that the killing of majestic animals is sick vile and wrong . the people who do this are nothing but trendy student types who want 15 mins of fame they should be concentrating on why they are whaling not the people who do it they tarnish the good work that greenpeace and freinds of the earth do and make animal protesters look like they are all terrorists it really winds us up that they are seen as heroes. if they are not carefull they will kill themselves and those doing it which is easily as wrong then they would have acheived nothing but noteriety.

friends of the earth achieve more buy protesting to the right people, putting your life at risks buy targeting men who, lets face it do the job to feed their families will never make japan or any other country that partisipates in whaling review their laws.

My wife and I are vegetarian. Not Vegan, since we don't feel that milk or honey are objectionable. A personal choice.

We will and do seek to change things that involve cruelty or uneccessary killing. Many years ago, I was a hunt-protester. But I moved up into the higher levels and sought to persuade Government to ban hunting. I'd like to think I had a hand in changing that law, but I'm not sure I did.

My wife led a lot of protests against a large multi-national Japanese company in the USA when they were causing major pollution. She and her fellow protesters did make a difference, but witthout harming anyone. They arranged events that publicised the problems and that hit the company in the pocket.

I took a different approach (this was before I had met my wife) and sought to help that company change and to maintain better profits in doing so. I still work with them, but they now understand the reasons. The Chairman of the company has grand-children, just as I do. He understood my reasons for wanting his organisation to cease the damage it was causing. With the financial obstacles removed, he could convince the sharehoolders. It is a long process but he will get there.
