Few points / questions
« on: April 28, 2009, 10:30:23 »

Firstly - I have many years of forums experience but I am quite surprised by this one.

Any reason you don't use the root part of this forum for General Discussions? It'd stop you having to move the posts about then into a subforum..

Anyway, I can't seem to find a release date / idea of a release date for the next version of ShipSim - I have tried search, but perhaps the characters are too short 'ss10' to find anything ?

Lastly, it would be lovely to have a Navy Frigate in the game (sim, game, call it what you want) - not for attacking other boats, but for the experience of controlling one just like controlling every other ship - Navy Frigates do do peacekeeping too you know.. and it's not like all features on each ship in this sim work anyway, so not a huge issue re: no guns! I realise there is one in the Pro version, which means it's already been made and is easily capable of transporting across.

One thing seriously lacking I find is the lack of new ships to add from the Shipyard - it's all well adding that section (I have been a registered user since the first ShipSim came out btw) but you need to add some boats - I realise they take time, but considering you are charging for them, surely it could cover the cost of an extra dev? Or at least let some forum members contribute boats to you for you to tweak and then release?

Thanks guys..

Chris

Hi Chrish
The last I date as far as I know was Q3 this year but as you are most likely aware things change
as I am given to understand at the moment there are no plans to release a navy ship in 2010.
But V-Step are very busy at the moment with pro coming to completion soon maybe later
they will release some more information on the forum.
My own personal view I don't think there will be any shipyard releases soon because of the workload
v-step have with 2010 and pro.
So we will have to wait for the new vessels/enviroments in 2010.

Hiya,

Yeah - I saw the trailers and such that said Summer 2009 - but of course things can change. Do you mean they are working on completing Pro 2010 as I thought Pro 2009 was finished and available to purchase?

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Alas, the succes of the Shipyard has not been such that the costs of developement where overcome, let alone leaving enough for an extra developer. And it is a business after all, so if things do not bring the awaited results, you might have to alter your plans or strategy, or you might go under.

And there are end users making boats, but so far only a few managed to produce a useable result. So if there were more people making boats according to the guidelines for shipsimulator, there would be more to 'tweak and release', allthough that sounds as if they could just stick a 3d model in after a bit of fiddling around, which is of course not true. The model is only the tip of the iceberg, the work after that takes months aswell. But given the fact that it's still a young series and the procedures will perhaps get easier in time, that aspect of the sim will be explored further.

Btw, the root board is for demo users, as indicated in the posting guidelines. Those users cannot acces the normal Tech support board for lack of registration. So questions and issues about/with the demo can be posted there.

Regards,
Fred

I don't think that they'll add that Frigate into SS10 even if it'll be just for sailing & not firing, because SS is a non-combat game, full of merchant ships & adding Frigate in to SS Pro - because that simulator will be in use for trainings in merchant colleges aswell as in naval too.

That got me confussed, because for adding naval ships in to not Pro SS people were asking mostly on this forum. But it could be that navies asked VSTEP to put a warship in SS Pro too.

Don't take all that as a true sayings as it were just my opinions.

A frigate would be usefull for keeping rammers and pirates at bay!!

Putting frigate in SS will bring chaos on MP, converting it to a battlefield.

You are only worried that people will shoot you?

It wasn't personal at all, simply wondering why you didn't want a frigate.

It could be useful to have one stationed in the Phi Phi Islands late at night to keep an eye on rash people.

Still waiting for you to answer the quiz question. It's an easy one really. Look at the funnel colours

True. It will be a relief when SS10 does appear as the speculation here will go away!

Hypothetically speaking, a frigate that is not armed, is not much use to a rammer anyway. They prefer the fast and agile, little ones anyway.  :)

I was looking to control the rammers with a Stealth Frigate, not give them something to play with.

I thought kick vote does the job very well...
yes it does, after the rammer has rammed it's target.

I've been working on my nuclear-armed invisible warship so that I can go on the MP servers hunting for Rammers.

Very true, D
This often happens to topics that begin by criticizing the way the forum is run—often while ignoring the posting guidelines—and by rehashing subjects already dealt with ad nauseam.  Such topics probably get the respect they deserve.

Chris

You're welcome, Chris!

And well, isn't a bit of lighthearted banter much nicer than the strict and harsh way of keeping stuff strictly on topic, even after the initially raised questions are asked and answered, that I have seen on so many forums in my also long experience with many other forums?

Just a bit of fun after the topic is 'resolved', but you did get your answers, right? Still, if you have any others, feel free to ask, and I am sure the topic will take a turn toward serious answers again!

Recap: SS08 root board: Meant for demo users.
SS2010 release: Q3 of 2009, as estimated in the announcements.
Navy Frigate for the game version: No concrete information yet.
Addon ships: Possible, as long as people make useable stuff, which doesn't happen often.

Fred

I was merely making a point - by posting in the root forum of Ship Sim 2008 - that is pretty much the default expectance of what 99% of forum users would do. See for yourself, the first 5 pages (can't be bothered to go through the rest) are all full of MOVED: - what does that show you? No one reads the 'where to post topic?' not always, no - but it's unusual - why not just have a Demo forum instead where Demo users post to and keep it all out. Why is Demo Support only in the root forum of Ship Sim 2008 - that doesn't actually make any sense.. that was my point!  ::)

The thread being hijacked? Amusing, well - maybe to regulars I guess, but I ask a couple of serious questions and it gets hijacked by 90% of **** and then gets moved to 'Small Talk' - kinda off topic..

Either way, I looked and looked for an answer regarding the navy frigate - yes, I found other discussions (also hijacked) but also not the point/answer I was looking for. Plus 'supposedly' no one wants a navy frigate in this game/sim so some people keep saying, perhaps VSTEP aren't aware how many people want it as to how many don't want it.. who knows!  :o

please don't swear on this forum. Thank you

Hi again Chris,

Well, I didn't make up the part about the demo users. It's just the way it was setup. But the posting guidelines are right there, a sticky, on top. And the other boards are pretty self explainatory.

General stuff about the game? That's what general discussions is for, the title says it all.

And since demo users cannot acces most of the forum, the root of SS08 was appointed for that. Maybe a more suited board will come to life in the next conversion, cause I grant you, it's not as logical as could be. But part of that 'mess' in there with all the moved topics, is cause a lot of people do not read the guidelines, and they are there for a reason. If people do not take the time to read the house rules, when they come here as a guest in our 'house', that's on them, not on us, really, would you not agree? They hop on, take no notice of anything, do not use the search option, and we get to answer the same questions, in the same wrong boards, again and again and again..  And that's not unique.. I have been on many forums, for many many years.. ignorance regarding rules and guidelines is a universal thing, in my experience, no matter how hard a staff tries.

I know what you mean with the hijacked point, but your serious questions were pretty much seriously answered, by Eric, myself and Diamant, right? At that point, what harm can a bit of lighthearted chat do, I wonder? Once you would continue with additional serious questions, you will get serious answers too, I am sure of that. But once you have your answers, we do not act as strictly when the posts get a little bit off topic. So far, the vaste majority of the members seem to like this tolerant way of doing things. We just enjoy the company of our fellow fans and enthusiasts that way. Can't be all bad, right?

And rest assured, VSTEP is well aware of the wishes of the public, they read the forum too, and we keep them abreast about these things on a daily basis aswell.

Fred
