Favorite ship horn.
« on: April 24, 2009, 15:54:51 »

Hi guys, I searched the forum and I couldn't find any favorite ship horn topics. So, what ship horn is your favorite? (In the game please, if you want to, you can share the real world but please share your in game one first). Mine I would have to say would be either the Pride of Rotterdam's or Titanic's.
Please note: I am talking about the horns made in the addon pack by Terry and Fred.

Since the default horns are shared by a lot of vessels, and there are really only 4 or 5 different ones by default, I reckon you might also be referring to the horn addon pack then, perhaps?  Might be an important note, if you want to compare horns, wether or not it is the default one or not.  :)

Mine would be all of them (addon horns) really... heh..  Each one suits the vessel it's used for, in my opinion. As such they're all perfect.  ;D

(hint of bias here?  hmm.. dunno...)

I agree with Fred.

I am of course absolutely unbiased and totally impartial when I vote for all of the add-on horn sounds. Especially a couple that haven't been relesed yet.

If only they had the recording of a replica, blown at full pressure....

I personally like the Titanic's triple-tone whistles (horn).  Nothing beats good old steam.

That sound wasn't made with steam, to be honest, but air pressure alone... But I do agree, there's something about those that you just can't beat.. steam ór air..  :P

Are you kidding me, air pressure horns sound like hell!  I know so because my town I live in has a fake steamship (a barge) called Wenonah II.  Even her horn isn't as good as the RMS Segwun's.

I mean the horn of the Titanic, even sounds good with air pressure. And since that's how they blew the refurbished horn, and the recording of it is the horn that's in the game, there's no steam involved at all.. yet you still picked it as the best sounding. So it's self evident that air pressure doesn't always sound bad.

Well, it does somewhat, but I still think it sounds better with steam.

EDIT: Are you saying that VSTEP used the real Titanic's horn recovered from the seabed in SS08?

Nah, no crawling back, you said Titanic's was best, and that nothing beats. So you thought that it was a steam sound.. And why would you not, it's not thát much different. Steam will have a different density and the temperature will make a difference, but unltimately I think it's more about the whistle itself, not the steam or air. So the tone and volume and 'body' may very a bit, but a good whistle will probably sound good either way.   :P  ;)

But since none of us here have ever heard her for real, and you can thus also not make that distinction, it's close enough for me, this way. That's why there's no replacement for Titanic's horn in the addon pack. Terry and I agreed that it was good enough, since it is the real deal.

So yep, the original whistle, that they recovered and refurbished, and used that time, that sound is the one that is sampled in the game, to the best of my knowledge.

I believe that the Titanic sound in the simulator was recorded when the original horn was restored.

It would therefore be composed of somewhat thinner material after being submersed in salt water for such a length of time.

They passed compressed air through it, but at nowhere near the sort of pressure that the original steam would have been applied (for fear of blowing the restored and treasured horn to pieces).

Nevertheless, as every sounding of the original would have been different (different steam pressure, different air temperature, different temperature of the various component parts of the horn, different denisty of air and so on), so there is no such thing as "one correct sound". There was a wide spectrum of sounds that would have been heard.
