Hey guys, I was listening to the TV while I was working on modeling, and I heard that tomorrow there is going to be a massive virus. I am not sure if this is true or not, but just a warning. Don't download from "second-hand" sites like downloads dot com. Just thought I would tell you guys.

NP! Jensen, if I were you, I would put all your important models on a Cd. I am putting all my shipsim projects Like the United States and the Volgo Balt 241 on a CD right now. Any important files.

Hi guys,

I really don't think a mass virus is really going to happen and if it did, it would probably target the most important computers and servers that run the internet, and not domestic computers like your or mine.

I don't know anything about this supposedly dangerous mass virus but as long as you have the right protection, and the software to deal with such things then it shouldn't be a problem.

Just my thoughts

I expect that as usual, the people who stupidly don't have a good antivirus installed will have their PCs bombard the rest of us with useless junk mail, slowing everything down. But that happens every day.

Short of boiling those stipid, selfish people in their own juices, along with their PCs and the malicious thugs that write viruses, there's not much to do about it.

I suspect tomorrow will have echoes of the millenium bug and life will carry on more or less as usual.

Anybody had a look at the calendar recently? What day is it tommorow? Ever heard from "Aprils Fool Day"?
Well, Terry already said it. Virusses are spread every day, 24/7 . So if you have a Anti Virus Program with recent updates: Don't worry. If you don't: You're asking to be infected.

The viruses are excpected to activate a feature made by the creators tomorrow. Could be devistating, but no one knows for sure.

Of course I know that! Nothing is! Macs are less vulnerable b/c of the smaller user base and it is generally regarded that OS X is harder to hack then Windows. You would have to be totally clueless to believe that macs, or anything with a connection outside the device itself for that matter, are invincible.

Other than maybe linux, while it is not invincible, there are very few viruses for linux due to the fact that most hackers use linux and don't want their viruse to come back at them.

Most virii for windows are written on windows. The reason linux does not get hit is it is based on permissions for system access (There are virii for linux but most are only in labs). I never run as the administrator in linux NO NEED TO. If i need to do something to a system file then it's the terminal and a terminal editor like nano or pico do the edit and then exit out of the terminal; if I need to install a piece of software then i log in as the admin in the terminal and issue the install command wait then exit when it's finished(with no need to reboot just for a software install). Only reason to reboot is if I upgrade the kernel.

Linux, Windows, Mac, BSD are all different animals. all have their weak points and there strong points. I need windows to play 1 game and that is SS. If it was ported to opengl instead of using questviewer as the 3d engine then SS would be trivial to port to MAC, Linux, BSD and almost any other platform so that people could have a choice.

Linux is not only the closest thing you may get to invincible it is particularly good at warding off the "April fools virus" or the real name for it being the "Conflictor Virus". There is an easy way to make sure that you computer is not going to fall in the morning of April first. Microsoft has a program that can detect the virus and eliminate the malware. All my computers are free after microsoft "malignant software removeal system.

As a long-term UNIX and Linux user and developer (been working on it since it's creation when it and DOS were both derived from CP/M), let me dispel a myth.

There Linux viruses about. The so-called permissions in Linux aren't worth a can of beans. (744 to you!)

Linux is no more immune than Windows or Mac O/S. The only reason it doesn't suffer so much is that there are far less users, and therefore less motivation for the criminals that produce the viruses. The sheer mass of Windows users is what guarantees viruses, not any inherent weaknesses in the other O/S. That and the fact that so many users believe they are so important that they can't be infected.

Still, it's now April 1st and no mass outbreak noticed so far.... Fuss over nothing? A way for Norton and their ilk to make more sales in these hard times?
