Hey Terry, or anyone else that might happen to know the answer to this question. I have heard you say that XP Runs ShipSim better than Vista. Is that really true or a joke? Thanks.

Almost everything runs better on XP than on the same PC running Vista.

Reasons:

XP needs less resources to achieve the same result.

The drivers for XP are more mature and have had longer to be optimised to be more stable and work faster.

Those blasted "Are you sure you meant to press that button?" questions don't pop up very time you press a key in XP, unlike Vista.

XP is at least as stable as Vista. More so, in my experience.

I only like vista because of how it looks. If I had an XP and could make it look like the vista startbar and all that then I would take it but is there any way to do that free?

There are, but be careful.

Some while ago one person on teh Forum came asking for help, as his installtion was having problems. After a lot of wasted time, I figured out that he had installed a program that not only made his system look rather Vista-ish, but it also modified a lot of the dlls underneath to make it behave like Vista. It was atotal disaster for him.

I downloaded a few such modifications and installed them on my test machine. Every one of them was a ttal disaster.

Dana (the blonde lady next to me in some photos) has some Vista themes installed on her XP machne. It looks pretty good. But themes don't upset the PC...

The Google sidebar is very Vista-ish. Pity they don't have the UK train departure boards. That is the ONLY thing I like on Vista that I can't do on XP (yet - but I'm working on it).

Don't get me wrong. Ship Sim works fine on Vista. But you need a better PC to get it run as well as it does on XP.

More memory, faster processor are the key thinngs.

What would you recommend as being the best vista theme for xp? There are quite a few and I was just wondering if any one stands out as being better than the rest. Thanks

An old argument that is becoming stale.

Yes Vista takes more resources, therefore 2 or more gigs of RAM is best.  Also the videocard needs to above medium speed.

I run Vista on an i7 940 processor, through a GeForce 280 card with 3x2 gig of fast 1066 RAM.

To slow things down I use Matrox Triplehead2Go.

And my favourite game is Flightsimulator X which has a massive scenery rendering task which is compounded when using an aircraft with a complex VC and also in real (and heavy) weather operations.

XP, who needs it?

So satisfied am I with Vista, that I am not going to look at Windows 7 until it is RTM.  It is freely available in beta at the moment, but I can't be bothered.

As to the fuss over Administrator control popups, UAC can be turned off in seconds.  So can Windows Defender if you are running a third party firewall and antiviral etc programme.  Aero should be turned off in the first few seconds after installation.

Sorry to wake this topic from its slumbers but I thought that anyone with the RC or beta of Windows 7 should be aware of these deadlines (now set in stone, according to the Microsoft Technical update I received today).

Of particular note is the Windows 7 beta timescale:

- Windows 7 RC expires on 1 June 2010. Starting on 1 March 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.

-Windows 7 Beta expires on 1 August 2009. Bi-hourly shutdowns will start from 1 July 2009.
