New Project: SMALL CAR FERRY
« on: March 20, 2009, 16:26:42 »

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to make this most recent vessel according to VSTEP guidelines. So far so good, but a long way to go. And I probably have to do some studying to cover all the angles before it would be suitable for the game, but worth a shot anyway.

(Anyone that has good photos of a wheelhouse of such a ferry, or just pictures of these kind of ferries, I could use such photos. All help is welcome and much appreciated!)

Here's a couple early WIP screenshots (a bit of distortion from converting to jpg I fear..);

WOW Fred, amazing work, keep it up!

That looks pretty much identical to the Maassluis - Rozenburg ferry I travelled on in Rotterdam  ;D Is that just a coincidence?

Hehe.. No that is not a coincidence, Nathan..  Well spotted.

It's a bit different though, the scale for one, and it's much more symmetrical, which the real one is not.

And thanks very much for the compliments, mate!!

Thanks very much!

I dunno, about 15 or 20 hours I think, so far. Mind you, the cars, are all standard Google Sketchup ones, so that didn't take any time at all..  But I do intend to make my own ones, these are kinda poly heavy for just eyecandy on a vessel.

And Nathan, yep that is a nice shot, it will help!!
Thanks a lot, mate!

Fred.

Impressive, Fred, impressive!

I'm searching my collection of ship books and magazines, but interior shots of ferries seem quite rare.

Ahoy Fred,
Over a period of time I noticed those fine things you're building. Pittyfull enough they aren't usable in Ship Simulator 08. And I'm hooked to this simulation. I once tried VS, but that's not my cup'o'tea.
Maybe in a future version of SS (16?) it will be possible to use your vessels too.
In the meantime, keep up the good work.
Regards

Hi Gentlemen, thanks very much!!!

Actually Aad, if I just manage to build my vessels according to VSTEP's guidelines (the others so far are too high on poly count though), they might well be usable.

But there's of course much more to it than just a model. I have to study a few things to be able to cover some of the points on the 'agenda'.

But in theory, this one could be used, so far. I'm just not sure if I can pull off the other things on the list. But I'm in no hurry, and there's plenty of tutorials out there on lots of these subjects.

Fingers crossed.  ;D

Cheers!

Regards,
Fred

Nice work Fred! Yeah, you are right about the cars. But can't VSTEP provide you with that if it is gonna be added to the game maybe?

Probably could, just take the cars off the Red Eagle and put them on there, or you could just make your own low-poly cars.

Using bump mapping, Fred could probably make a car look like a high poly one, but using as little as like 100 polys. Maybe you should try that Fred!

Heck, you could just make a box and it would look like some of the new cars. :)

Fred, when you get that vessel past the Vstep QC checks, it will be my personal honour to produce the vessel dynamics! And I'll make you the best ship's horn in existence.  ;D

Fred

Do you know who built the real ferry? Their website might have more interior photos?

Very nice anyway

Not bad, Fred, not bad...  What programm are you using?
Does she'll be with azipods or VSP's  or just props?
I would guess sketchup as that is what he usually uses.

He uses sketchup, you can easily convert a SU model to 3Dmax DIAMANT, since his SU models are amazing. ;)

No one said this was going in the game.

VSTEP doesn't support SU models
Models that are of sufficient quality are fine for VSTEP. How do you know that the maker of the Ocean Star didn't just make it in SU and the export it to 3DS max? Then what difference would it make to Vstep? It is just the tons and tons of members that have provided VSTEP boxes with funnels that lead VSTEP to believe that SU Models would never be SS Worthy. But all of Fred's models are good enough to be added! It doesn't really matter what program. Maybe Jumbo Javelin was made in sketchup! Who knows?! (Of course, that was just an example, maybe the entire fleet was made in SU! (I know it really wasn't but come on Diamant, it makes perfect sense!)

It must be a VERY good crane, witch meets all the requirements.
