Radar simulator
« on: March 12, 2009, 20:43:44 »

Currently im following a course for my radar license. The school has 6 bridges + 1 instructors bridge, the bridges have a view of 120 degrees. All bridges are fitted with ARPA radar, ECDIS with AIS, VHF, MF/HF, Navtex, GPS, gyro pilot. The exercises are really realistic, had a few excercises where suddenly the GPS falls out or the gyro pilot crashes. When crossing the English channel for example, you also have to contact Gris Nez traffic or Dover coastguard by VHF. Before every excercise you have to do some small voyage planning. Calculating the tide and current, check the used VHF channels etc. etc.

Instructors bridge, all vessels can communicate with VTS, coast guard and other vessels, operated by the instructor, via voice over lan.

I want one of those!

Part of the bridge console. Joystick is for bearings, searchlight and binoculars.

ECDIS (left) and the conning display. Conning display shows all the information about the own vessel.

Crossing the English channel, enroute from Dover to Calais with 2 PI lines on the MPC racon buoy. Crossing the traffic lanes reminded me of a old internet game, where you have to cross a highway with a frog or something. I had to cross the lanes with a small general cargo vessel with a service speed of 11 knts while there were container vessels crossing with 25 knts  :-\

I have no clue what they payed for it, but i do know what i had to pay for the radar course....  :-\
They are still extending and improving the simulator. I believe it's from Konberg or something.

Why do you bother with ShipSim then, must seem rather boring after a real sim?

Hi Ballast,
That little lot makes what I used to do look like childs play ::). I taught on the British Radar Observer course for three years, long, long ago, we just had static radars overlooking the river Mersey on the west wall of Gladstone Dock.  True motion was in it's infancy then, which perhaps gives you an idea of how long ago. I reckon I would be at a total loss nowadays. :'(

I agree with you, that it looks easy compared to the days when people sailed around the world with a sextant and a chronometer. But then again, there werent any large container vessels then who traveled through Dover strait with 25 knts. It's strange for me to imagine, that back then True Motion was in it's infancy. Nowadays everybody sails on Relative Motion.

Maybe the thought cheers you up that if you place a modern mariner 50 yrs back in time, he also would be total loss.

I passed my radar exams this morning, 1 written exam about radar theory, 1 oral exam with the examinator and a external official and after that i had to sail on the simulator. I was in the north east going lane and had to cross the TSS heading to Dover according to COLREG and the proper use of VHF. All went well, only a French fisherman gave me a hard time who thought the fish was swimming in front of my bow. But then again, i would be insulted if he didnt try to annoy me  ;D

Thank you  :) I got my radar license right after examination, they are allowed to do that on location. This was the last course i had to follow for my 'chief mate under 3000 gt' ticket. Now i only need to make some more sea service days to retrieve it.

Just got back from a 5 day course a simulator centre. The simulator centre is based at a Dutch island, Terschelling, just off the Dutch coast which takes about 2 hrs by ferry.

Ship Simulator Pro

DP console for the 'Dynamic Position' system.

Bridge used for fast ferry training.

Bridge for DP training.

Their biggest bridge, used for conventional vessels. Bridge is placed in a cylindrical shaped space which gives the simulator a view of 360 degrees.

Bridge console where i spend most of my time this week. All bridges are equiped with everything you can imagine on a real vessel like radar, VHF, AIS, EDCIS, navtex, echo sounder etc. etc.

Instructors bridge.

Cargo handling training, had to top up the cargo tanks of a tanker and trim her with ballast.

Engine room simulator, main engine was a Sulzer with 66.000 bhp (50 mega Watt)

Virtual 3D engine room, you can walk through the engine room with a joystick and operate stuff like valves and so.

View from my hotel room  :P

After all the hard work at the simulator, relaxing in the hotel pool is also very important  ;D

Buoy depot.

Buoy laying vessel of the Dutch coast guard.

Some stuff the local diving club found in the Northsea.

Command tower of the English submarine E-26, missing in action with 31 souls on board since 3rd of july 1917.

The island's Lighthouse, also used as VTS centre.

Last but not least, the Arie Visser  ;D

Shame I don't have any pics of the big bridge simulator I visited after radarcourse in Rotterdam many years ago. It was from Norcontrol and technicians were busy then adjusting several things and they could use a volunteer captain on the bridge. Experienced 2 short runs also with tug operations, it was just GREAT!
