Yes, I don't think it's the Foudroyant, perhaps the USS Essex or Boston..?

Port Villa

Incitentally, It wasn't registered in Southampton anyway... Cardiff. Since about 1972 (?) all British ships are registered in Cardiff, but are given leave to publically state whatever the general home port is... But a home port has no legal definition

Port Villa is right. Queen Elizabeth 2 was sold and her Southampton was painted black like the hull and Port Villa was put in between the old Southampton name and Queen Elizabeth 2's name. You get the go Stuart

Which was the first ocean liner/ cruiser to have 'turbo electric' transmission...

(mixing water and electricity... how clever :o)

BTW... (not part of the Q) but what legislation is there to prevent the name Southampton remaining on the stern? Since it is no longer under British jurisdiction, the good people of Southampton can't do anything about it... Not that they could anyway, since Southampton is not a legal port of registry.

Stuart

You are not correct when you say that all UK registered ships have Cardiff as their port of registry. The Registrar is in Cardiff but the available ports are:

Sorry Mike. That was worded sloppy on my part. Nevertheless, I stand by my intitial comments that the vessels are legally registered at Cardiff and are only given leave to state elsewhere.

I think my interpretation is correct, but perhaps it is splitting hairs un-necessarily. So, for the sake of day-to-day operations, I will cede your point.
