Cannot get Cruiser to move
« on: March 12, 2009, 05:11:14 »

Hi

I am VERY new to this, I have 2008 with new Horizons installed.

I am working my way through the missions starting at the easiest, I have got through the first seven with no problem, I am now up to "Cruiser meeting" but cannot get the cruiser to move I have tried full throttle and thruster and the engines and thruster rev up but the ship goes nowhere.

Any advice on what I am doing wrong?

thanks

Daniel

Have you made sure it isn't moored? And are the engines on?

Hi Daniel,

If this is the first time you’ve driven a vessel with azimuth drives, here is some advice:
The bow thruster is controlled by the horizontal control above the two AZ joysticks. Leave it off (center) for now. It is only useful at low speed for docking.

You want to push both joysticks forward all the way (full ahead) and leave the white arrows pointing aft. They show which way the propellers point. As in a conventional propeller, they push the ship in the opposite direction.

You can move the joystick in two ways; with the arrow keys or with the mouse.
Press the Up arrow key to move the sticks up. If precision steering is on, they will stay there until you press the Down arrow key. If precision steering is off, you need to hold the right shift key down as you release the arrow key to make the stick stay in position.

Once both sticks are full ahead, the ship will slowly begin to move. She is not a jackrabbit.

To control the sticks with the mouse—which is very easy after some practice—move the mouse pointer near a stick to display blue, red, and green circles.
The blue circle controls the azimuth of the screw—click in the blue circle where you want the white arrow to point.

The red circle controls reverse RPM. The green circles controls forward RPM. The border between them is 0 RPM.
Maximum green radius is maximum forward RPM.
Minimum red radius is maximum reverse RPM.
The azimuth has no meaning for the red & green circles.
The radius has no meaning for the blue circle.

Marty

the blue circle is for rotating the azimuth propellers in the opposite direciton for Ocean Star but regular direction with Jumbo Javelin and Bugsier 2.

You are wrong. All three ships behave exactly as I described.

I think I know what he means by that. He must be talking about just using the arrow keys.

Hi Daniel,

Information is scattered about, but here are some suggestions:
Depending upon how you got SS 2008 and new Horizons, there may be some manuals in PDF form in your installation folder. Right-click on the SS 2008 icon on your desktop, or on the Start menu, and then select Properties from the pop-up menu. Then click the Open File Location button.

You should see some Manual files with a .pdf extension. Double clicking them should open them in the Adobe acrobat reader.

You can also download the manuals by going to this topic:

http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,4509.msg45292.html#msg45292 (http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,4509.msg45292.html#msg45292)

You can download the Mission Editor Tutorial and Info1.pdf from this topic:

http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,2886.msg28895.html#msg28895 (http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,2886.msg28895.html#msg28895)
INFO1 has instructions for operating some vessels and the container crane.
The ME tutorial also explains how to operate some things, and gives insight into how the various waypoints in missions work.

If you have any specific questions, you can always send me a PM.
Regards,
Marty

Hello Daniel,

Curiousity led me to sail this mission again, in a surch of the problems you have encountered.

I just got damage and sank and have no idea why, probably ran aground,
but how can I tell and how do I prevent it??

With all the precize info you've got from Marty in the controling of the ship, be advised:

The Phi Phi island scenery has places where the depth's aren't enough for a ship like the Ocean Star.

And in this particular mission coming alongside the Titanic it is important to know of / look for the AI ships.

They are on your path towards the Titanic; from the little sailingvessels to the fast moving yachts !

And there is a blue colored /marked depth hazzard between you and the Titanic. (see the MAP / RADAR)

Find your way around it and avoid the AI shipping and you'll get the result, you are looking for.

Whenever you'll hit grond or an AI ship you'll recieve some damage % to the hull, witch will add to sink your ship eventualy.

Try, try and try again if you want to know how it is / should be done ! That is the fun of this simulation-game.  ;)

vr. gr. / kind regards, Erik

Thanks for reminding me Erik. I forgot that we had been through this before:

http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,11576.msg136907.html#msg136907 (http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,11576.msg136907.html#msg136907)
I was not paying attention to the environment.

Hi

I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or starting a new thread, but since I am still on the same mission...

I cannot get depths to show in the chart display, I click on the icon and nothing happens.

Also what does enabling Naturalpoint TrackIR do?

thanks

Nothing, if you don’t have Naturalpoint TrackIR.

Be sure you have clicked the third button from the left under the chart.

Put the transparency slider —to the right of the buttons—all the way to the right.

Zoom in by moving the slider on the right of the chart up at least ¾ of the way.

For some environments like Marseilles, it is important to adjust your monitor so that you can distinguish the very light blue from white. All of Tonsai bay is light blue or green, not white.
The bow & aft depths shown on the HUD are meters below the water surface.

Marty

Thanks folks,

it seems the depths only show at a certain zoom, and I have sorted out the Naturalpoint issue,
I don't have one :-)

cheers
