I think it will be a 2 GB graphic card or something like that since 786 MB and 1 GB already exist ;D
And the CPU and GPU have probably melted together when Intel buys Nvidia... :P

This will be interesting:

Although we are still working hard improving Ship Simulator 2008, at the same time a new development team has started on Ship Simulator 2009. Some of the new features:

A completely new ocean, based on real-world wave spectra
Tornados / water spouts
The harbour of Sydney
Part of Antarctica
New navigational instruments like a radar and a conning screen

I hope they will not use Questviewer 3D, or at least fix it so that it can 'see' Core 2 duo (or quad) processors as just now it can only 'see' one processor.

I have dual 2 core processors (each running @ 2.13ghz) and I fear SS2009 might be out of reach for my PC because Questviewer can only see one CPU processor, not two. (I'm assuming the minimum specs for SS2009 will increase)

Hi Kev,
I have a Core2 Duo 2.13GHz, E6400, Level 2 cache 2MB, 1066MHz bus speed, Intel P965 express chipset, in my machine. So far (Including New Horizons version 1.4 build 1034) I have no problems at all. Sounds like the same one you have. My computer is a Compaq Presario Media Centre SR2029UK. with 2GB memory and Nvidia GForce 7500LE turbo cache video card, with up to 512MB video memory. I'm told that is a pretty poor one but it works fine for me.

Hi Angus,

Yeah, I have the same Intel processor as you have. Both yours and mine PC's are pretty good specs for SS2008, my only worry is that as Ship Simulator becomes more sophiscated and more CPU-hungry in future, I fear my PC wouldn't be able to cope because Questviewer can only see 1 processor (even though my PC has two!).

If they can get Questviewer 3D to 'see' two processors then we might be OK for future Ship Simulator releases.

Kev,
I gave up worrying years ago, it got me nowhere ::). Now I just sit back and enjoy the present, the future can look after itself. If the future does bring hassle (SS2009), I have plenty to keep me occupied until doomsday with SS2008 and all it's ramifications. ;D You never can tell, 2009 might not be as hungry as all that. Vstep would be partially cutting their own throats if they produce an item which requires too many folks to have to update their hardware. Stone cold business logic, I would think. :-\

Kev,
QuestViewer itself may only be able to use one core, but QuestViewer itself is not the sole user of cpu time. The external routines that calculate the positions of ships and handle the dynamics calculations are a major burden. They can use a second core, or perhaps more.

What did all you folks who kept asking for things that might not be accommodated by the present architecture expect VSTEP to do? A major rework was inevitable. Buying a new computer is a small price to pay for 8-meter waves, isn’t it?

My PC is only a year old. I'm not willing to shell out for a major hardware upgrade (i.e. a new CPU) just so that I'm able to play SS2009/2010.

Not everyone is able to afford a new PC every 2 years or so. My old PC lasted 4 years and the only reason I bought a new PC was so that I can play SS2006 and then SS2008.

I don't mean to sound a bit cheeky but 8m waves? What's the point of that in Ship Simulator? I'm sure in real life no Captain would be mad enough to sail his/her vessel in these conditions.  An arcade game, yes I think perhaps for fun, but for a Ship Sim gamer who want realism it would be suicide. Just my opinion.

Kev,
Many vessels handle 8m waves, but the point is that, if you have read the many posts requesting big waves, typhoons, waterspouts, giant beanstalks, etc., along with people scurrying about, it is obvious that the demands for those vital improvements cannot be met without a complete remake of SS.
Even if they were to be accomplished within SS08, you would still need a more powerful machine to run it.
It is so easy for people to demand things without the slightest clue about what is involved. My personal desire is for SS to continually evolve as primarily a realistic ship handling simulator and forget the irrelevant features like people. I realize that this will inevitably require further investment in hardware. Kiddies can always stick to SS08 for its arcade features.

Really? I didn't realise Ship Simulator 2008 is an arcade game.

How many ships in SS2008 can handle 8m waves? I think there's only a few - VLCC Latitude, Ocean Star, Vermaas and maybe Titanic. That wouldn't give you much choice to choose many other small/medium ships in SS2008 because they would be totally overwhelmed by mountainous seas. Have you ever seen MV Red Eagle out in 8m waves? It has never happened in real life because it would be suicide.

Last year I was on a very rough voyage aboard a medium-sized ferry in gale force 7 winds and the vessel was struggling to travel more than 5 knots in 3m waves!  (in fact at one point the ferry didn't move forward at all because the  waves and howling winds were almost pushing it backwards!). On another occasion I was on a ferry voyage during a exceptionally bad weather and it took 16 hours to reach its destination, when it would normally take 2 hours 15 mins in good weather!

If we have anything like 8m waves in a future Ship Simulator release, then God help us because it's not a very nice experience to go through in real life.

Kev

p.s. I'm not a kiddie who wants an arcade game. I'm in my early 30's with some experience of seamanship under my belt. I love playing SS2008 because of realism it brings to my computer screen.

Kev, you must have missed all those posts crying for really big waves.
If you don’t think SS08 is an arcade game, you haven’t been on an MP server, or seen some of the “missions” that are submitted to CMMs.
Marty

P.S. I’ve been in 7-meter waves on a 287’ 1941 vintage ARS through the tail of a Pacific typhoon.

Before they make a shipsim 2009 i think they should make some patches to the one already here, the multiplayer part i really not too good and the game is so full off bugs,

I really love this game but please. don't think about a new game before this one works. ;)
