An application dosn't need your username or password, since you can't use it without an account anyway. So you would be dumb if you entered it in a fb application, nothing to be alarmed about, just don't enter your password on anything not official. (Facebook has "approved" applications that costs the user $250 to have them check and approve, this is starting when the new facebook comes out)

Doesn't everyplace have the potential to have a virus?

I never gave in. There are tonns of sites and newspapers out there which tell people not to share personal information on facebook and warn us about viruses there.

And I never will.

I stick to the same principles. I also think these things are a load of rubbish and a waste of time, I mean why would you want to talk to people over the internet

still the common facebook user, say a girl (not trying to be insulting here) could get an email claiming it was from a friend and they'd enter their pass and username and wamo! they're screwed. Yest be cautious everywhere, but in that place especially, people send viruses and so on all over the place and it fools alot of people, but some are smarter. I have the same issue with ebay, get an email go to log in and norton marks it fraudulent, so theres issues there too.

MC, you wouldn't get an email. The viruses are in applications (that facebook has to approve?). Witch is sad since the facebook developers didn't catch it.

You may be right for the specific attack in question but these applications are not the only infection vectors.  You could get an e-mail in a phishing attack.  You could click on a link in a forum posting to a site hosting malicious code.  Terry is right, people need to be careful everywhere and at all times.  There are no safe harbours online.

Facebook does not have forums. Facebook will not email you (a third party might). I agree anything could have a virus. But FACEBOOK does not, some things developed by 3rd parties such as myself could have viruses, if you only use the FACEBOOK pages (like your wall and stuff) you won't get a virus, only if you use a virused application (3rd party!) or click on a link that someone (3rd party) posted!

Well I guess the computer has a cold. But right now the only safe places to go to are the ones with no virus or infections.

The problem with what you are saying is that you are implying that Facebook is safe.  Facebook is not necessarily any safer than any other community site on the Internet.  Perhaps you should do some research into Facebook phishing, and records of previous Facebook security incidents.

I'm not trying to denigrate Facebook.  Some of the Facebook attacks don't even have anything to do with the actual site, they are just phishing using a Facebook look-alike.  My point is that users should not trust Facebook any more than they trust any other site.

I don't go on facebook anymore, besides I always go on two websites when I'm on the internet.
