FORUM ICON COMPETETION - MARCH 2009
« on: February 26, 2009, 22:36:31 »

Announcing the "FORUM ICONS" competition.

Fred and I invite you to submit new icons that we can use on this Forum. These are the "Smileys" or "Emoticons" that you see in messages. Like these:    :police:  :o   :sleepy: and so on.

Your prize is the prestige of having your icons used on the forum for a while. (You may grin very smugly for at least a month!)

We're starting with a simple competition. Please submit your set of thre icons, covering the following:

1. A "Shhh" icon
2. A "Captain" icon
3. A "Cheering" (YAY!) icon.

From the entries, we will select icons to enhance the existing set, if suitable entries are submitted.

Competition is now open. It closes at 11pm UK Time on 22nd March 2009. The judges decision will be announced within a day or two of that date.

Please read the guidelines below.

Guidelines for creating icons for Ship Simulator:

(1)
What do you get out of this?

We will use your set of icons on the forum until we hold the next competition or until we decide to use another set of icons. Generally, this will be for a minimum of a month. In that time you will get the appropriate level of hero-worship from other forum members.

(2)
The judges will consist of selected Moderators and/or Administrators. Do not try to influence them or you may be eliminated from the competition.

(3)
All work submitted must be your own creation. This is most important. Do not submit anyone else's images.

(4)
Icons should be preferably produced in "gif 89a non-interlaced" format (not essential, though). If you don't know what this (or any other terms used here) means, the answer is Google!

(5)
You should probably set the background as the transparent colour, unless you have a really good reason to do otherwise.

(6)
The size of your icons should be consistent with those already on this site. It's probably not going to win many favours if your icons cause the text to look strangely positioned.

(7 )
When you submit the icons, you are giving Vstep permission to use them in whatever way they see fit, in perpetuity (forever). You won't be able to stipulate what happens to them. This is the case whether your icons are selected as competition winners or not.

(8)
One entry per person, per competition.

(9)
The judges decision is final. No discussions will be entered into. Unless it involves Marmite.

* update 2nd March - underlined words added in section 4.

Mine for Captain.

I have three versions. Bearded, non bearded or pirate. I hope this doesnt violate the rule n0 9.

PS: About rule 9 - can I post my ssh and Yay on another post or will that break rule 9?

edit: forgot the zip file

So we'll take the second one as your entry, then?

Probably best if you delete whichever set you don't want to enter. That'll avoid complications later.  ;D

Hi MMMMMM.

They're very good! But unfortunately, they don't seem to be your own work. Or are they?

DIAMANT, save the image as a .gif, witch allow a transparent alpha channel. (This will only work in things like Piant.net, GIMP, Photoshop)

gif 89a non-interlaced is an option you get when saving a .gif in GIMP or photoshop (don't know about paint.net, don't use it)

Just to add to Austin's good words, when you save the image (File/Save as), you will probably see an option that allows you to "make background transparent" or "set background color as transparent" etc. Select that.

Regarding the 89a, if it isn't shown as an option, then is probably already set to that in your image editor. I won't worry too much about that. (I'll update the rules slightly in a moment)

TJK, Austin, I removed the last few posts. A discussion about the specifics about the formats and possibilities might not be the best thing. People might get confused rather than having it help them...

I hope you understand, it's in the interest of the topic. Which ideally should be used to enter your possible.. well.. entry..  ;D

Cheers guys!

Regards,
Fred

No need for apologies!

There was nothing wrong... it was just getting potentially overly complicated.  ;)

I think that the problem is that, most of us don't have the software to be able to make things like smileys unfortunately! ::) :'(

Here, it follows all of the guidelines, it is 20x20 which is a bit larger then the  :D smileys but about the same as  :police:

I used the same colors as the current smiles so they don't look weird. Suggestions would be helpful, I still plan on making it better. :)

I might just have to manually do the stroke.

It is 100% my work, might be easier if I just copied the currently smiley and added a hat. :P

Yes sir. I built the hat & the head.

(I copied with my eye a hat on google images, so I didn't make it look funny)

Thanks terry, I will improve it, since the stroke is horrible. Make the hat more visible.
