I just bought SS08... I have graduated to the next level.
Although I couldn't afford the EP, That will come next month.

I am excited because perhaps now I will be able to figure out navigation.
You see I am a captain of my 737, have been for the last 10 years (simulation only)
but have been fliying for a grand total of 18 years (again just simulation)
And now I feel it is time to retire and try my hand at mastering the water.

I have tried to looked up articles on ocean rules but I didn't understand it.
(Like the buoy system)
Perhaps some here can help me in that area. especially with multiplayer.

I am a audio learner, but if I can see it in action (instead of reading it from a page) I can understand it,
LOTS better then just reading it.

So I decided to say hello to all of you while I am downloading it (and it's kind of slow 100kb/s, slow for me anyhow I have a 12mpbs connection).

To go along with my post, do you all use Team speak or what?
Last time I used team speak it was version 1.01.. I don't know what version it is now because
I don't have it installed. But I am working on that right now as well

Yes I did a search, but didn't want to go through 10+ pages. So I would appreciate a link to a thread (if there is one) about the voice server and it's rules.

To sum up how much I know of sailing is this.
Port is left, Starbord is right, I am guessing Aft would be used as well but I don't know what the front would be called... Forward perhaps? That sums up all my sailing knowledge...*shrugs* as I said I need help

Hello dpsmith, and welcome to the forum! Yes you are correct, Port is left and Starboard is right. The front of the ship is called the Bow, And the Back of the ship can be referred to as Stern or Aft. As far a buoy stuff goes and multiplayer, you don't really have to pay attention to. Basically there is one main rule in multiplayer. Don't hit anyone, and you won't be hit. (Other then no harassment and that stuff) It is a very fun game, but if your system isn't good enough, it can really get to you. Have fun, Hope to see you sometime on multiplayer. That's a good answer from firestar, it would be difficult to teach you seamanship on the forum.
May be better for you to ask specific questions as situations arise then we can answer them.

First of all, be patient.

I am not really a expirienced skipper in real life so I won't have much expertise to share.

But, manouvering a ship is something that goes verry slowly.
And try to really moore youre ship against the dock and not still 10m away from it like a lot of people do.


Multiplayer can be fun but allso dissapointing, biceaus a lot of servers have big lag issues.

Something that allso can be confusing in the beginning are the azipod controls, but there can be found a lot of info about that on the forum.

liveatc.net?

That would add so much more realism for me, Playing online, while listening to say the NY harbor frequency..
I am guessing there are special channels.. So that it's all orderly, otherwise you have chaos that leads to wrecks,
so I can't see how much diff the communication could be from the aviation communication.

Also when looking at the servers, how can you tell if someone is online, and what does the numbers mean?
Example: VSTEP New Horizon 2 server has 260/25 I know that only 25 people can connect, but what is the 260?

Skipper is the honourary title assigned to a person in charge of a smaller ship.
Captain is the title assigned in English-speaking navies to the rank for commanding ships. Any naval officer commanding a ship is addressed as "captain" while aboard that ship, by navy customs.
Commodore is a military rank used in some navies for officers above a captain, but below a Rear Admiral.
Rear Admiral is a naval officer rank above a Commodore.
Vice Admiral is senior to Rear Admiral but junior to an Admiral.
Admiral is the rank of the highest naval officers (equivalent to an Army General)
Admiral of the Fleet the highest naval rank. Some countries use the equivalent of "Grand Admiral".

BTW, The only REAL officer on a Merchant or passenger vessel is the Radio Officer, he's the only one who had to take an oath for his profession.
A pilot is not a member of the crew, but a specialistic occupation. He or she is the person who gives the Orders during navigation in (to the captain) unknown waters. But the responsibility is and stays in the Captains hand.
I'm almost sure that those are not all ranks, they are all ranks known to me.

Funny, my father never went worked for the navy but he still was a commodore once.

He was one during his time at Wm. Müller where his ship (the Nassaukade (http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/schependb/inhoud.php?action=tel&id=2067), later Damco 270 (http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/schependb/inhoud.php?action=tel&id=2067)) was the flagship of the inland cargo shipping fleet. I don't know how much ships they used to have (my father passed away so I can't ask him anymore) but I do recall it used to be a lot. Many of them were sold to Damco after Müller stopped their inland shipping business.

Another part of Wm. Müller was the Batavier Line (http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/batavier.htm), this part was later known as the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij (Dutch Steamboat Company) and  Vianda Steamship Company Ltd. Later some of these ships went to the Holland America Line.
