Vacancy at VSTEP: Visual Effects (FX) Artist

VSTEP is looking for a talented Senior Visual Effects (FX) Artist to join our team. Successful candidates will be able to research, conceptualize, and animate natural effects like water waves, weather, fire, smoke, foliage, dust, fabric. You must have an interest in real-world simulation and be driven to create effects never before seen in video games. You will have a good eye for effective visual representations. Successful candidates must be proficient in animation and have an understanding of physical principals.

Our development team is a mix of about 30 BSc and MSc level programmers and artists from The Netherlands, UK, Austria, Poland and India. We are the developers of the successful Ship Simulator franchise, and the RescueSim training products for fire-fighters and Navy officers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development of a large range of visual effect art assets according to the agreed design and within the constraints of the target hardware and software. These art assets include particle systems, shader code, meshes, textures, and animations.
  • Partners closely with the Lead Developer, Shader Programmer, Lead Environment Artist and Producer and will be responsible for creating spectacular visual effects.
  • Responsible for all technical and aesthetic considerations for the project’s visual effect art style.
  • Manages In-Game Particle Effects work, Explosions, Gunfire, Energy FX, weather effects, etc.
  • Communicates with programmers/designers as necessary to bring tasks to completion.
  • Provides creative input specific to assigned tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years in game development
  • One or more game titles shipped
  • Four or more years 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, XSI or other 3D software experience with a focus your specific discipline
  • Experience with Quest3D (optional but an asset)
  • Solid understanding of game creation processes and dependencies
  • Excellent understanding of Particle systems to create realistic CG effects
  • Ability to fine tune work at the pixel level
  • Understanding of techniques for graphical effects, such as multi-pass textures and shaders, character skinning, skeletal animation and HRD
  • Strong next-gen texture and shader creation skills
  • Strong grasp of timing, subtlety, and effect
  • Strong technical skills with scripting based systems
  • Demonstrate a flare for what looks sensational and convincing

Portfolio Requirements:

All portfolios must contain a detailed shot breakdown of the work. It must be very clear what you, the applicant, are responsible for in your reel, screenshots, scanned pictures, web page portfolio, etc. We would also like you to include your name in the subject line of your emailed application, as well as the competition number of the position(s) that you are applying for.

3D Portfolio

  • Examples of natural and organic effects (smoke, fire, water).
  • Examples of rigid or soft body dynamics.
  • Effects created in a game engine.
  • Examples of your effects in the context of a game engine (not just black backgrounds)
  • Examples of modeling texturing and lighting.
  • Examples of various animations.

2D portfolio

  • Texture creation examples.
  • Effect animation done in classical animation. (optional but an asset)
  • Technical drawing or color work. (optional but an asset)
  • Technical Portfolio (OPTIONAL)

Programming

  • Descriptions or examples of technical projects.
  • Shader code: sample code of some natural effects
  • Maxscript: sourcecode of scripts.
  • Any other programming examples or technical examples you have created.
