London
« on: January 29, 2009, 18:39:49 »

Hi all

I have a question about London since me and my class are going to make a 4-days schooltrip to London.
But now the real question is, what is really worth visiting when you are in London. Ofcourse we are going to the see 'the big ben', 'tower bridge' and maddam tussauds. But is there something else that you would really recommend?

Picadilly circus, great places to eat there. Covent gardens, Buckingham palace, Tower of London, The main park of which name I cant remember, Theres a load of great places to go. For the football fans, Wembley stadium is a great place to visit. West and Central London is the best place to go. The london underground is always interesting, its the fastest way to get around london. London truly is the greatest city in the world in my view, im sure youll love it.

EDIT: Out of interest, how are you getting there? and when are you going?

Greenwich, as it is the adpotion of Zero longitude, HMS Belfast and

Harrods!

You can go to Tower Bridge, but its Places which have an INSIDE you can see such as the science museum and the above that counts. Visit places you don't see on google. I have such a nice pic of the Tower Bridge that I can make a large profit by selling it to some Postcard dealers ;D

Want it anyone?

The RAF museum just outside of London (20min in the tube) is verry interesting.

The science museum was allso interesting.

But the Marine museum was pretty boring.

Places to miss:

The London Planetarium is a waste of time these days.
Give Madame Tussauds a miss as well.

On the opposite side of the Thams to the London Eye, you can catch a river boat that takes you down the Thames under Tower Bridge and past the Tower of London etc. You can get off and have a wander around at various points as well. They usually have a running commentary.

Now that's one of your worst ideas, I think.

You know, I've lived near to London for much of my life. I've walked around it thousands of times, I learnt to drive there. I used to cycle and motor-cycle around it for years.

But I've only seen about 1% of it, I think.

Some other things:

Take one of the evening "ghost tours". If you can get one that goes around Whitechapel (hunting ground of Jack the Ripper), they can be quite scary. But there are many others. I've been on a few - great fun and a pleasant evening walk.

If you go to London and arrive at Victoria Station, it's a short walk to Buckingham Palace (where Mrs King lives). They allow visitors into the Palace these days, so you could go around there. After that, a short walk up the Mall, past the Serpentine to Trafalgar Square, where you can see the lions and Nelson's Column and chase the pigeons (everyone does).

From there, you can catch one one of the "round London" tour buses. They go around the Capital, stopping at lots of different places. You can get on and off at lots of different points, travelling around London City in a circle.

Get off at London Dungeons and see the medieval torture equipment (bring some back for me to use on some people on the forum)

Get off at London Eye and see the whole of London as you rise into the air, above the Houses of Parliament and the Thames.

The River buses are on the other side of the bridge.

Remember that London is only a 1 mile square around Moorgate area. What most people call "London" is actually a different city, namely "Westminster". Then, the county of London is immense. It's about 30-40 miles across.

Terry, anything fun to do in the U.K. I may be taking a trip to Latvia in the next few years and while I am on that side of the world might as well go somewhere else.

(I am about 50% Latvian, my grandma on my mom's side lived in Latvia until she was 10 when she got put in a camp in Germany, and then traveled to the U.S. when she was 13. And she is thinking about going back to see it again.)

The UK has many things to do. But it depends on where you're going to in it, time of year and your interests etc.

Latvia is a long way away...
