I think that its birthday would be the day it was launched.

By convention, the birth date of a ship is the day her keel is laid. For Titanic, that began on 16 December 1908.

Her hull was launched on 31 May 1911. There was no christening. On that occasion, three flags were flown atop the Arrol gantry: The Union Jack, White Starâ€™s red pennant, and the Stars and Stripes of her owner.

Titanicâ€™s conception took place in the summer of 1907, at Downshire Houseâ€”the home of Lord and Lady Pirrie in Belgrave Square, London. It was there that Ismay and Pirrie sketched the plans to build the three Olympic class ships to compete with Cunard for the transatlantic trade.

The anniversary date isn't till April this year, and I am very sad at that time for the people who perished.

Yes, Fred, that is the customary way of dating the beginning of construction of a ship, although one doesnâ€™t usually anthropomorphize the event. The other alternatives I mentionedâ€”the first gleam in her fatherâ€™s eye and her baptism in Belfast Loughâ€”are less often used. The launching of her hull, of course, was only a mid-point in her building.
If one insists that her â€œbirthâ€ be at the end of construction, one has a problem determining exactly when that occurred. One might argue that Titanic was never satisfactorily finished.

my english is strange i know..

the birth of Titanic as far as I can see..the 31 May 1911....

at our Humans we count the day as we to come into the world an not the day where we conceived...

and so...i think by ships it's similar...

the 2nd April 1912 is the officialy day where the Titanic beginn her period of service
by the W-S-L...

at the day H&W delivered the Titanic at Ismay....

the dates to lay down the keel...the date as launching and the date as she sink are verying events....

i think.....the birthday of Titanic is the 31 May 1911 also this year 98
and the 15 April 1912 It's the 97 anniversary of his death....

The "Ship of Dreams".....the legend enveloped R.M.S Titanic......will go further in the reverberation of the story......on an endless trip through our hearts....

It was designed.
It was built.

It sank.

Shall I submit my ground-breaking historical analysis to the Encyclopedia Titanic?

PS. Marty- emphasising the third flag, the stars and stripes of its owner, is something that we British are quite relaxed about. After all, it was really an American(ish) ship, and our own flag carrier tended not to ram icebergs with their ships.

(And why do I feel there is a 'Was Titanic British or American' debate coming on....)

It is an interesting point. When Hoverspeed was still operating out of Dover, I once got into an arguement (yes, really

) with a crew member; the Ship was registered in Italy, with a British Captain, operating between Britain and France, but owned by a British Company that was in turn owned by an offshore company. So which nation did the ship really belong to?

Titanic wasn't Irish. It was built in Northern Ireland, which isn't part of the Republic of. Anyway, does the location of construction affect the nationality of the ship? (and that is a question rather than a cue to fight

I have never heard of having an anniversary of things death, isn't it usually the birth, (birthday)?

Hi Stu,
You might say, as others have, that merchant ships today have no nationality. They may be owned by a multinational corporation, flagged in a land-locked country they have never visited, and built in an Asian shipyard of a European shipbuilder.
Ownership and flagging can change many times over the life of the ship. I donâ€™t think you can make a case for country of build, or for the flag country, to determine nationality. That leaves ownership, but often that detail is intentionally obscured.

FIGHT!!! well the northern Irish were proud of the Titanic as they built it, so if you look at it like this:

Built: Northern Ireland
Company: British
Owner: American

so the question really is which is more important in showing a ships nationality, Builder, Company or Owner? I cant decide
