Start in stupid places during Free Roam
« on: July 23, 2007, 17:52:37 »

Is it just me or do some vessels just start in stupid and pointless places during free roam mode.  For example when i choose the yellow port of rotterdam tug and the Solent level,i spawn out in the open sea alot of the time...having to drive all the way back to land....very annoying when you want to practice with the tug...open sea is no good.

Ships i can understand but the smaller vessels.  Is there anyway to choose where to start?

It would be nice if there was an option, to select the starting place in free roaming  ;)

Much like Flight Simulator... you choose your berth or channel, or a slew type tool to position anywhere you want. Would help practice go a LOT faster. Especially since there is no rate change.

Presumably the scenario editor will effectively solve this problem...

I think that when they come out with the mission creator, that problem will be solved. Just make a mission, choose the boats etc. and start it up...just like SS 2006. I think they said it will be in a patch comming out soon.

Just noticed a few other silly spawning points...

FAIRMOUNT SHERPA:

Twice i have used Free Roam with this vessel: first time i was spawned up the river Medina at Cowes.   Not a problem as it was intresting trying to manouver this large vessel down river until i was slightly south of the Ferry berth, East Cowes, and then i stopped...aground!   A bit silly spawning a vessel when all you can go is a mile before you run aground...(how would she have got there in the first place  ??? )

Second time i started was just by the Itchnor Bridge in Southampton.   Good I thought i can have a nice drive around the docks..only too find that i was ALREADY agound !!!  >:(

Grr

Never mind, really enjoying '08, much improved after '06, and going to have to get an upgrade for my computer so it can handle the graphics better..  8)

The Mission Editor has effectively removed the need to live with the random choices of free-roam.
If you want to see all of the free-roam landing zones, open the environment in the mission editor.
The blue boxes with red arrows are places where ships are placed in free roam.

What are you talking about, you CAN choose you starting point.  ;D

Well, as long as you get the SS2008 Addon that is. Cause after I installed there was a new option. Check it out:

I have that as well, but but for some reason I can't move the ship to anywhere where I want it spawned.

I have just started up SS2008 2 mins ago and the "Select start position" option is no longer available on the free roam menu!!!!  :-\ It WAS there last night when I installed SS2008 Add-on.

Anyone else experiencing this?

UPDATE: please ignore this posting - the "select start position" option appears only after you've selected boat, enviroment and weather. But I still can't select where I want the boat to spawn.

Hi Kevin :)

Sounds strange that the option disappeared. ::) I haven't experienced that.

In the 'Select start position' you can pick a certain spawn point. It's not possible to start anywhere you like but you have to choose between pre-defined spawning points marked with a small black outline of a ship (seen from above).

Hi gronnegaard,

please see my previous posting which I've modified. I'm a terrible morning person!  ;D

In the Solent, I can see a black outline of my ship. When I click on it, a green circle appears and I've tried to move it but nothing happens. I have tried this with other enviroments (even the ocean ones) and different ships but no avail.

Regards,

Kev

It's not possible to click and drag the green circle. If you look more closely, you will see several small black outlines (3-5?), and you can only choose between one of these pre-defined spawning points.

So in reallity, when you 'Select start position', you choose one out of 3-5 pre-defined start positions.

Oh, I didn't know that, as I was only able to see one black boat on the map. When I get home from work tonight, I'll try and zoom out to see if I can see other black boats (pre-defined spawn points) on the map.

Thanks

New missions? The mission editor is available on the official SS website.

If you are referring to the 2008 add-on, you must register both your 2008 key AND your 2006 add-on key to get the license key and download link for the 2008 add-on. You do this in 'profile' in the forum menubar.

If you register your 2008 licence key you will get access to the technical support area where we can help you make the editor work.

Just a thought guys...

See in 'free roam' which you get spawned into somewhere which you don't want? (i.e. in the Solent you are spawned in the middle of nowhere, when you wanted to be near the coastline)

Well, there's this "save game" feature. You sail to the place which you want your free roam vessel to spawn. You then save the game. Not ideal as you may need to sail quite a distance first time, but at least you would only have to do this once. When you load the saved game, your ship will be where you wanted it in the first place.

Thats a good idea..but of course dosnt work if in the first place you start where your vessel runs aground... ;)
