We could be on the verge of a better Titanic whistle....
« on: December 13, 2008, 04:06:09 »

I asked what Titanic's whistle would sound like if it were new on the TRMA (Titanic Research & Modelling Association if you don't already know) forum:

http://titanic-model.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=100&topic_id=29477&mesg_id=29477&page= (http://titanic-model.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=100&topic_id=29477&mesg_id=29477&page=)

And as it turns out, the Normandie's whistle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqPxhZhM0Po (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqPxhZhM0Po)) was "...of the same size and make (Smith Hyson) as those fitted to the Olympic-class ships..." according to Scott Andrews, a TRMA trustee, and one of the men who did the research support for the Ship Simulator 2008 Titanic. He also linked to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q5oQEbc5e4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q5oQEbc5e4) with this comment following:

Quote
There is a difference in sound quality due mostly to the difference in technology of the recording devices, but you will note that the pitch and chord produced is the same. Hopefully, some day someone will make a high-quality digital recording of either that Normandie whistle set, or one of the three working replicas produced by Kahlenburg for RMSTI. Kahlenburg, you may remember, was the firm which inspected and conserved the actual Titanic set, from which they obtained the dimensions for the replica sets. There's also an identical set -- also operational -- in Cornwall, England, from the Mauretania which could be recorded.

That means places exist where Titanic's whistles' sound can be replicated! No one knows of a high quality recording of them at this point, so I asked what the next best thing was until then.

Maybe TerryRussell and/or Mad_Fred can see if they can visit one of those locations to try to give Titanic a better whistle ;D

I could be mistaking but isn't the the whistle we have now a recording from the refurbished original?

I'm sure I read that somewhere, and I recall seeing a video of it blowing and I think that was the exact sound in the game.

Or am I seeing things again? (Wouldn't be a first)  ;D

Hi Fred,

Yes, In actual fact, the whistle we have now is correct. And yes, it is the recording of the refurbished one.

Why so many Titanic threads....:-[

There does seem to be a lot of repetition about Titanic horn sounds recently. All very pointless.

As  Fred and I and others have pointed out many, many times: the current Titanic horn sound does not need changing. It is about as close to the authentic sound as it can possibly be.  ???

Yes, it is the wreck's whistle, BUT, as Mike on the TRMA responded to this vid:

Alas, those are only partially correct. I think the whistles were only blown at quarter to half pressure with compressed air instead of steam, which is a totally different sound  They did a good try though :-D

I have already done research in this subject, and it IS true that those whistles were blown at far less psi than they were originally due to fear of breaking it.

Look RMS, we already know all this, why is it being repeated?

People are really getting annoyed because there have already been several topics on Titanic's whistle, and Titanic in general. Even I am starting to become irritated by Titanic topics everywhere.

Is that supposed to be a joke? because, even with my sence of humour, I don't find that funny, just seriously irritating. The way it comes accross to me is as though your trying to wind me and everyone else up, especially with that last reply ???

Look, either way, I'm not getting myself banned over a silly Titanic topic.

Should I lock this, then?

But really, if anyone is getting that annoyed, then maybe there should be another board....

Or on her own forum, elsewhere.

This is my point!! We/I just don't want the forum to be flooded with Titanic!! I know, lets create a new board all about Fairmount Sherpa?? hey??? good idea isn't it!...

Is this a wind up?

Jack....

I guess, Jack. Do you want me to lock this?

And have any of the other ships ever had monsterous amounts of posts relating to them as much as Titanic?

Do what you like with it, but, I'm not getting involved anymore. I think you've got my point.

See what other's opinions are....

Exactly. What puts the Titanic head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to development or importance?

How would people feel if i created a topic saying the Pride of Rotterdams deck colour is out of colour by 1 shade or the stairs, might, just might be made of wood instead of metal.

Sorry, but that's my take on all this.

This is getting off-topic anyway. If you want to say anything, PM it to me.

My first lock! ;D

P.S.: Titanic is the most famous ship in history, which is why she has so much fanfare, not to mention the sole reason some of us bought the game!

Tell you what: give me substantiated data that proves this, and I'll look at redoing the horn. I can't say fairer than that, can I?

But, I mean real data, not what someone believes, thinks, assumes or imagines.

Thanks.
