A kind of random question.
« on: December 13, 2008, 02:23:14 »

Well as many of you may have noticed I'm in too cruise ships. And I noticed that many cruise ships are regestered in Nassau, Bahamas. I figure that's because it's close too alot of Carribean cruise ports. Am I right, and if I'm not why are alot of cruisers in registered Nassau?

Hi Mr Flappy.
Its all to do with insurance I think, also ships that are flagged out to other countries do not meet the safety standards like the US and the UK expect.

Hi MrFlappy,
As Jim said, ships are commonly registered in countries other than those of the owners for various reasons. Panama and Liberia are among the most popular.

Those countries are more attractive places because, in addition to lower fees, they usually don’t insist upon actually seeing the vessels, or impose onerous requirements such as seaworthiness. Foreign registry helps to shield the owners from certain liabilities.

For instance: Titanic, an American owned ship, was registered in Liverpool because White Star Lines, then an American owned company, had its European headquarters there.
Fairmount Sherpa is of Panamanian registry, as are many merchant ships.

I thought it had something to do with marrying people aboard? Maybe I just made that up completely

Seeing how far from correct that first sentence is, I'd have to agree with your last sentence... You "just made that up completely".

Actually, one of the reasons is to do with marriage on board ship :)

I remember hearing it from someone who works on ships, can't remember where though ;)
