Actually, Saint Nicholas was of Turkish origin, and was also known as Nicholas of Myra. He really exsisted. And he was known for being very generous and giving out food, cloting and money to the less fortunate, hence the tradition of presents. Santa Claus is a mix of this guy and 'father winter'. (I think his name is.)

In Holland we still (on this day, december 5th) have the 'Sinterklaas' (Saint Nicholas) festivity. Kids get presents, just like American (for example) kids get from santa at xmas.

Dutch settlers took this with them to the new world, and there it got mixed up with the 'northern european' Father winter tradition and ended up as Santa Claus.
