Port of Helsinki
« on: November 29, 2008, 10:05:22 »

The port of Helsinki will be officially opened tomorrow (11/30/2008)
The port was the one of largest investment projects in Finlands history, including over 16 kilometers of tunneling and 30 kilometers of seaways, official pages (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/en/).
The new port also means shutting down three smaller ports (ro-ro port, oil terminal and a container terminal) in Helsinki, giving vast new areas by the sea to be built. Also, shutting down the ro-ro port enables new bridge to be built which apperently will be over 2km long.
Virtual model (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/virtuaali/index.html)
Quite strange presentation video (http://wm.esitykset.net/procam/vuosaari_fin_stream.wmv) from 2004.

Another chart (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/img/fi/linked/satama/Satamakeskus.jpg)
Buoy (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/img/fi/linked/mediapankki/vasenreuna5_m.jpg) (these can been from 10km distance during night, something totally different comparing to SS08 buoy's candlesticks which can be seen when you can touch them...)
Another one (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/img/fi/linked/mediapankki/valovayla8_m.jpg)
During construction they found a mammoth bone (http://www.vuosaarensatama.fi/img/fi/linked/mediapankki/mammutti_4647_m.jpg)
Biggest crane (http://www.hs.fi/kaupunki/artikkeli/Suomen+suurin+satamanosturi+saapui+Vuosaareen/1135236854617) in Finland arrives, shipped from Holland (video) (http://wm.esitykset.net/procam/vuosaari/satamanosturi.wmv).
The budget for the opening seremory is 732 000 euros.

Just letting you to know :)

Only cargo shipping moves to the new port.
Although it's estimated that 200 000 passengers/year travels using the new one, but I it's just ropax.
