was it an old one, i believe they used gaming ports, which now we simply use usb ports.

I've mentioned this before..there are adapters for "old style" game controllers into new (USB) computers..

I don't think ship sim uses the force feedback, was it usb or serial? If it was serial you need the serial patch.

Yes old joysticks used serial connections.

So do PS2 and USB, which is why you can convert between them so easily. I have some small in-line plugs that do the same job as the unit shown above.

the only thing i have from microsoft was the keyboard and and mouse that came with my and the os system

I've even used a Thrustmaster Top Gun fox 2 pro (who comes up with those names?!?!!??!)
and a Logitech G25 wheel  in unisen in uniq at the same time 

Wheel for the rudder, the joystick throttle for thrust; side to side for the sternthruster and buttons on top of the stick for bowthrusters; worked great with the sherpa!
