MSC Napoli gone
« on: July 19, 2007, 00:09:47 »

Hi
It seems that salvors have tried blowing up the MSC Napoli (beached of Devon) so it can be cut up and recycled as the hull was too badly damaged to tow to France for assessment (never mind that Falmouth is just up the coast).

They detonated explosives and it still hasn't sunk... but they won't tow it... err... in case it sinks. I know, I'm lost too..

Hm, not sure if Falmouth would have been suitable. She would probably have sunk before getting there.

That's what I'm saying- they've been trying to sink it all day.

Got to do it in the right place though, otherwise it's a hazard. I thought they were going to cut her up for scrap? Did they change their minds?

I think that's the plan yes. Or sink it in deeper water.

If it's floating I'm surprised it can't make it up the coast to Falmouth, but I'm not a marine engineer.

Even on a semi submersible for transport. But if its older and damaged maby its an insurance write off anyway.

"Once the forward section of the vessel is separated the plan is to tow it into deeper water and anchor it.

Divers will assess its structure and sites will be identified where it could be towed for recycling - this could be either in Europe or the UK.

The stern section, including the accommodation block, will be left where it is and will be cut up and recycled."
