But if it is a fault in the actual forum software, then it's the responsibility of the SMF people, of course, not VSTEP.
It's a small mistake, and people that are smart enough to operate a pc, can probably also figure out what's going on with this typo. The risk of it "getting out of control" is very, very small indeed, that's a bit of an overstatement if I ever saw one. I noticed this little typo on day one, and have never really given it any more thought.
And how often do you really base your "am I going to read this topic?" decision on this little bit of info anyway? If I'm honest.. I think 99% of the people just read all the new posts that come up in the unread list, or just the stuff that they find interesting, based on the topic title, regardless of how hot the topic is.
