Elbe Bridge View?
« on: September 09, 2008, 17:52:07 »

Is it just me, or are you also finding it near impossible to pilot the Elbe using the bridge view.

I can't even see the bow, let alone where I am going...

That's the reality. It is like that in real life.

Actually, I find it easy. But I also make sure I have a man on the bow, looking out and calling back to me.

[edit - meant "bow", not "box" - oops!]

Yeah, it's the helmsman position. There is no need for him to have an perfect overview. The vessels master (or the officer on duty) will stay close to the front windows or outside in the bridge wing to see everything.

Oh well. Another vessel that I'll have to use the external cameras for.

Try the walkthrough mode and walk up to the windows, just as the Officer on watch would do in reality. The helmsman is not required to do anything other than steer the ship, as has been said, he has no need to see anything other than the compass, or to watch through the windows how she is swinging. (or not!)

Not this again. You don't have to be able to see the bow from the helm!

This topic re-animated my dream of another multiplayer feature: one of us is the master, another player is on duty at helm and engine controls, awaiting the masters order... ;D

just choose the walk trough camera and go outside the bridge and then shift between the walk trough camera and the bridge view...simulating one person for the watching and one for the steering ;)
my English was somewhat poor in this reply...sorry for that :)

To quote an old proverb, "Where there's a will there's a way".  And yes Lanedre, If my Norwegian was 100th as good as your English I would be very happy. Do not denigrate yourself. ;D

The Elbe is fantastic. One thing I'd love though (and this isn't the Elbe, it's a sort of general Shipsim thing), would be to have different bridge/wheelhouse positions to skip through. I know you're probably thinking, just use number 3, but I mean one's that work with the keyboard/joypads (and don't require mouse input). I'd love to have the Elbe's flying bridge, and stern bridge as controllable positions. Same with the Bugsier (for when you're stern tug, or just going backwards), same with the big ships, either side of the wide bridges. Just a thought.

Again, love the Elbe though. :)
