Now I see it, now I don't
« on: September 08, 2008, 19:19:20 »

Ahoy Ship(sim)mates,
Today I played a custom mission in New York Harbour and discovered a strange graphical glitch.
When I enter the small port of Governors Ellis Island I clearly see a nice building on the end of the dock (pic 1). As I come closer nothing changes (pic 2) till a few Yards away from the dock only the reflection of that building is visible (pic 3) and even closer everything is gone (pic 4). I tried different graphic adjustments with the only result that the building dos'nt show up at all when I bring the graphics down.
Will someone check it out for me so I can conclude that it's on my machine only or just "Part of the packet".
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Aad

Hi Aad.

Yes, I get exactly the same effect. I don't think it's a problem with your system, but perhaps it is a glitch in the rendering instructions within the game. Not sure, but looks that way.

I'll move this to General Discussions, which is where posts about Ship Simulator should go if they are not directly covered by other Topics.

Hi Aad,
That’s Ellis Island. As a kid, we used to go over there and walk down the path to watch it disappear. Cool!

Yes, it’s a glitch in the environment where the building is not drawn at certain viewing angles.
It’s a favorite stop in many sightseeing and taxi missions—possibly for that reason.
There are some theories involving David Copperfield, but I am skeptical.

Hi Paul.

As Marty and I have said, it happens to everyone. It's a minor glitch in the game. Has no real impact, just a trivial point of interest, really.

Just a way to optimize the graphics so not so many objects are rendered into the scene at one frame (after what I have been reading about it similar to LOD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_detail)) or you can call it LOV (level of view) ;D

I thought LOD was just to do with the ships

Good advice for gettting th emost out of the PC. But in this particular case, it wan't have any effect. The game simply won't show that building from some angles.

Is it like walking past benches etc on the titanic and they disappear before they reach the end of the screen?

On a wide screen display you can watch the whole Titanic disappear when it gets outside of the 4:3 aspect ratio part of the display.

Oh now I understand. So this game must have been designed on a non-widescreen monitor
