Add-On 2008 - Northern Kap
« on: October 15, 2007, 21:22:24 »

Hello,
Congratulations to VStep for the nice Add-on, it really expands Shipsim2008 in a new dimension.
It is one more step forward, a very good one indeed.
I made a quick trial with the fishing vessel Northern Kap (for reasons known to me..).
The ship is very enjoyable, one small disturbing un-nicety (bug report?) is that the pictures of the helm in some view modes show the wheels turning in the wrong direction when using the keyboard, although the reactions of the ship are correct, in the right direction. Well, the rudder comes to zero instantaneously, which is too quick of course.
Steering is otherwise good, although the rudder effect is small, especially without engine thrust, but one can easily adapt to it. The transition for the rudder "from with to without" engine is greatly improved.
Also, I think to remember there was transverse thrust effect of the screw when reversing, now there is none, which makes manoeuvring more difficult than normal with such a ship.
I also saw a tramway in R'dam! Was there one to be seen before?
Fantastic job, bravo
Regards,
Luc

Hi Luc :)

I'm glad to hear you enjoy the add-on. I think I can explain some of your observations.

The helm is actually turning the right way. It's an optical illusion which has something to do with the frame rate. It's the same illusion you see on TV when you watch wheels rolling... They sometimes seem to turn the wrong way.

VSTEP is working on the effect of the rudders. Max effect was set to 45 degr when it should be 35 degr.

Another thing they work on is the rudder delay caused by the steering engine. As it is now, rudders react immediately when you give the order.

Unfortunately these features didn't make it into the add-on release, but perhaps they will be added in the multiplayer update.

Hello groennegaard,
Stroboscopic effect, I can live with it!
About rudder delays, I saw no Rudder Angle Indicator, so that I looked at the rudder from an outside view, and the rudder seems to turn at a normal pace (ok in manoeuvring mode, perhaps high for steering) should I say, when controlled with the direction keys.
The rate of turn in forward seems adequate, as is its build-up (?). But it looks like too much counter-rudder is needed to bring the rotation to a halt.
When backing, the rudder has far too little effect, if any, and I tried to see if the choice of setting angles below  stalling would not improve the effect, with no result.
Steering this ship when backing is uneasy, but far from impossible. Of course, if you struggle against wind or need to turn in the bad direction, things can get worse, but turning backwards is always possible. Problem is of course that it is not always in the direction or at the rate you wished.
Nevertheless, a pleasant ship!
Regards,
Luc

Yes. There will be an official announcement tomorrow. Here is a bit more about it:

I think this is a result of the low rudder effect due to the 45 degr. model. I think it will be better when they get that right. Usually 5-10 degr. of couter rudder would be enough to stop the turn, but now you'll have to apply a bit more.

Northern Kap is the name of the add-on fishing vessel...  ;) So, it's a boat.

Which patch are you referring to, the add-on, or the 1.1 update?

The 1.1 update is available to all members, the add-on is only available 'at the moment' if you purchased the Ship Sim 2006 add-on, but it will be available for purchase for all members, as soon as it's finalised :)

Hello,
Having tried to find if there were any changes to the rudder setting of the ships, I checked again the rudder of the fishing vessel from the outside view.
Strangely, it has been changed in the wrong direction: The rudder, instead of coming amidship at a reasonable rate (using the keyboard numpad 0), is centered instantaneously.
Now, it seems that the counter-rudder needed to halt the rotation has improved. I very much like this ship, although there is no "paddlewheel effect" (or what was the name for "effet de pas d'hélice"? corkscrew, screw transverse thrust effect, screw side thrust??) and that the rolling period is very short.
Regards,
Luc

I don't like to intrude, but the vessel is actually called "North Star". It is written in large letters just below the for'd wheelhouse windows!!! :P

Hehe :) :)

Right, if you bought the SS06 addon, you can register the key in your profile. On doing so, a big orange box will appear saying you can get it for SS08 for free.

If you have already registered your key, and you can't see the box, re-register it :)

Any better? :)

Hello Traddles,
You are right, it comes from her original name in the 2006 Add-on, not yet named but being evidently the Billing's model (476?) Nordkap (North Cape?) (http://www.modelenium.co.uk/models/NORDKAP--BIL476.aspx)
The name has indeed been changed to North Star in the version for ShipSim2008, but not in the 2006 one.
Also, it is worth to be mentioned that with new versions/patches, some dynamic characteristics of some ships are modified, so that it becomes difficult to make comments. Improvements in one area could go together with degradation in other handling pecularities. Tracking these changes is not easy!
Merry Christmas to all
Luc
Edit, sorry the name had been changed in the last version of SS2006Pro that I have (5 feb 07). I no longer have the previous ones installed.

Hi LucAtC,
I thought you might be interested to see another "Nordkapp". Built 1972 from kit and still going strong. This is my daughter setting sail. ;D It is a name I've always liked, having once been there. ;)

That is  ;) correct, but you can also wait until the add-on is ready for SS2008, it will probably be published in a near future? Just a guess,  ??? of course!

If you have the SS06 addon, you will get it for free :)

In around January, it will be available for purchase for SS08. ;)

January was the last I heard though :)
