Questviewer in SS Extremes?
« on: February 28, 2010, 11:48:56 »

Hi all,

Does anyone know if Vstep intend to use Questviewer again for Ship Simulator Extremes?

It's so I can make a decision about buying a new motherboard and upgrade the CPU (which I need to do anyway) and which components to look at.

Thanks very much

Kev

Hi Kev,

Don't take my word on this, but last time I heard, I don't think Questviewer was going to be used. Could be wrong, though!

Hi Jack,

Many thanks for your reply. Wouldn't surprise me if this was going to be the case, as it seem a lot of people on this forum are having problems with Questviewer.

I think both Quest3D and questviewer are from the same company.

Hi Kevin,

I don’t think your decision on computer purchases should depend upon whether QV will be the graphics engine for Extremes. Any other graphics engine that might be substituted would be at least as demanding of the system, if not more.

Do not be misled by the common erroneous idea that QuestViewer is the cause of many problems. QuestViewer, as the controlling program for SS, is simply reporting problems in other software modules that are not part of QV. It is these software modules, written by the developers or from third parties, which make the major demands upon the system.

I do not know if Extremes will be driven by QV, but it is the runtime environment for applications developed in Quest 3D. Going to a different graphics engine would imply adopting a different development platform.

Regards,
Marty

You might factor into your speculations the fact that Pjotr was also a co-founder of Act-3D.

Hi Marty,

Reason I was asking about QV is that I am starting to have quite a few questviewer errors when loading certain missions. When that happens, I run Resource Monitor and each time it says the CPU was running at 100% (my CPU is 2.13Ghz, which is just below the minimum requirement) and had to force it to shut down QV using Task Manager.

Most of time QV works fine, apart from a handful of missions which failed to load when it got frozen at 75%, 80% etc.

I'm thinking of buying an Intel Core i3-540 which is 3.06Ghz on each core and was hoping that would improve the SS2008 playing experience, and that it will be more than enough to meet the requirements to run SS Extremes (yes, I'm planning to buy SS Extremes! )

p.s. I didn't realise Act-3D made the Quest3D software

I strongly suspect that SS Extremes will run with Questviewer as the engine. This note by Marty is worthy of consideration:-

Hi Angus,

I agree, it increasingly looks likely that QV will be used again for SS Extremes. I just wanted to be double-sure before committing myself to a major upgrade for my PC.  ;)

Many thanks Angus,

Your PC set up is pretty similar to mine (same processor & graphic card etc). Only difference is that I've got Windows 7 installed.  ;)

My computer is similar too, however, my CPU is overclocked to 3.2GHz, and the Graphic Card is a 2900Pro, and I am expecting to play well ShipSim EX. Wait until the game is out to check if is enough to play it. :2thumbs:

Hey,
My CPU also runs at 100% when I run questviewer, I have a Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.8GHz, it does occasionally crash for me as well.

I should point out, one more time, that QuestViewer is the controlling program for Ship Simulator and is “running” all of the time.

Most of that time, however, the CPU is actually working on program modules that were called by QV but are not part of QV.

It is very rare for QV to “crash”. It is an extremely reliable graphics engine.
When folks report a “QV crash” they usually fail to mention the software module, external to QV, that actually failed. This seems to be a concept that few are able to grasp.

Thanks for that info Marty. It makes sense....I was just never aware that that is how questviewer runs.
