Controls for the Jumbo Javelin
« on: November 29, 2008, 19:36:23 »

I just downloaded and am trying to operate the JJ.  However, I find I don't understand what the control is that is off to the right (on the display).  If I activate it, a green circle expands around the controls but for my life I don't see what they do.  Where can I find some explanation?  Help please.

I beleive the one you are talking about is the azipod.

It is used for docking etc i beleive.

The green circle is to move ahead, red atern.

The blue is for which direction you want it to turn.

Your're right, Shipaddict. The single pod is for berthing and for dynamic positioning means. You can use the lever in the same way as known from the "Bugsier 2", but the azimuth thruster of the "J.J." isn't useful for normal propulsion means at sea/enroute. That's why the original vessel has this one as a retractable pod.

Cheers

Here's a picture of a couple azpods if it helps at all.  :-[ They rotate around to change the direction of the ship instead of having the traditional way of having a rudder and a propeller. Relitivley new tecnology, it has only started being put on larger ships in the last, oh I don't know, ten years? Queen Mary 2 actually has 4 of them propelling her.

Well, the above pictured pods are the main propulsion thrusters of that ship, the "J.J."'s is somewhat smaller and less powerful. The "QM2" has four, but just two of them are turnable.

JJ’s drive is not an Azipod. It is retractable into the hull. The motor is mounted vertically above it in the tube.

You can see an example of a retractable azimuth thruster on this site

Thanks for that! Looks very interesting, going to do a little more re-search on that now ;D

I did a post asking what the other controls on the Jumbo Javelin are for, you should have searched first.

FYI: Azipod was invented in Finland.
I personally find Javelin's pod performance to be quite poor, but maybe it's just the heavy load.

The AZ drive is only 1700 KW. It is not meant to move the ship at more than a couple of knots. Its purpose is dynamic positioning and low-speed maneuvering. It is not a “Pod”.

If there is a report on the controls posted somewhere in the forum, I haven't been able to find it.  What should I search for?

So what's the difference between an azipod and an azimuth?

Azipods are electric driven with a motor next to the propellor (see above), the azimuth propulsion instead is diesel driven from inside the hull by means of a gear within the turnable gadget... :)

That specific type of control is called a combi lever.  We use the same type of controller on my vessel for a drop down z-drive in the bow as an addition to the tunnel thruster.  Our drive retracts vertically into the hull and is used offshore only.  This type of drive can not be used in the up position because of the angle on the drive shaft.  Our company also uses swing down z-drives.  These drives are used in the up position or down position.  They both are driven by diesel engines.  However, some companies use diesel electric to drive the same z-drives.  The electric motor is not located in the drive like an azipod.  The electric motor drives the shaft in place of the diesel engine.  Hope this helps. :)
