I think I've seen a post where it was stated that with the upcoming mission editor it will be possible to add mooring points also in free roam, but don't quote me on that (I'm too lazy to do a search on the forum about it).  :)

Are you sure that you can add mooring points in free roam? I understand that you can only do it with the mission editor, you have to create a mission. But that's no problem anyway, just create a free roam one ;)

The open sea - this is when a ship slips into a daily routine, I know people whom have been in open sea for 3 weeks and not seen another ship. Live is slow and easy.

The real work onboard starts once you are within 50 miles of land, and for us on the ferry this means that we never stop.

It's ashame about not being able to moor yet, but it will come, as all good things do. So here's waiting for the programmers to fill our stockings at Christmas

Hi there,
You can find information on when the mission editor patch will be released.

http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,1733.0.html

There is a big discussion here about when the next patch will be released.
