« on: July 28, 2009, 22:21:03 »

evening gents

after watching a documentary on the sinking of the titanic i heard alot of new theorys that if they hadnt had reversed engines they could have made the turn and avoided the iceberg that left me gobsmacked that they actually could have got to new york and all been merry does any one agree with this??? also there were reports that there were lights seen from a ship not that far away that could have helped but sailed away has any one heard that one???? i cant remember all the theorys but if any one wants to share some i would find it most fascinating thanks all

Yeah I think what they say about putting the engines astern and turning didn't help particularly. And I also think it's true about the lights from another ship.

But there are many more people in the know on Titanic than I am so correct me if I'm wrong anyone. :)

what does it matter if the ship could have avoided the collision? It's wont do any good if it could, cause it has sinked and nothing can change it now, can it? I think it would be best to let her rest in peace. But returning to your question I don't think not reversing would help, based on titanic topics and stuff.

what i cant understand is how did no one try to find out about that ship seems rather strange that it would ignore a sinking ship or did it have more to do with it ???

I think Titanic would have survived by hitting the berg headon to only flood the forward first compartment. I am comparing Titanic to the ship that hit Olympic, HMS Hawke. It Titanic hit the berg headon, her bow could have been damaged but in better condition than Hawke's bow:

Then after hitting the berg headon, Titanic would of made it to New York. But hitting the berg flooding 5 compartments and sink made her famous. R.I.P. Titanic

that ia an interesting point it justs seems that more scenarios than the turning and reversing engines would have saved her but if it did would we be talking about it now r.i.p titanic

In my opinion, if she did even plough into the ice-berg bow first, she would of been so badly mashed up that she probably would of sustained serious damage, regardless. And I certainly don't think she would of been in any position to sail anywhere. Though, possibly, people may of been saved.

But, look at it this way. You see an ice-berg coming towards you. What is your immediate reaction? Avoid it. Not plough straight into it.

As for the other ship, The wireless operator had bluntly told the ship to "Shut up", as it was intercepting signals from another ship, in which Titanic was communicating with. This ship then turned off the wireless, and thus, Titanic had sealed it's fate for good.

Titanic's Sinking was not due to one single thing, but many things. One lead to another, a chain of events occured. There were no binoculars in the crowes nest, exsessive speed, rivets, wireless, the belief that she was un-sinkable, the loss of communication between officers and the captain when lowering lifeboats after the collision, so many things. And Unfortunately, Titanic payed the ultimate price, along with it's passengers.

Also she was never christened, didn't she just have fireworks? If a vessel isn't christened isn't that bad luck?

I wouldn't know to be honest. The only ones I know about are:

It's bad luck to change a ships name.
It's bad luck to blow a sunken ships horn/whistle.
It's bad luck to pilot a ship which has sunk previously.
It's bad luck to use the name of a ship on another vessel which sunk.
It's bad luck to use a sunken ships bell (as in, if it were taken and restored, like the horn/whistle).

But I don't believe in any of them. Except, the name bit. I think it's wrong to change the name of a ship/boat. But that's just down to personal opinion.

Okay just I'm going to find a sunken boat, do it up and rename it titanic, dive down to some random sunken ship and nick its whistle and bell then go around blowing the whistle all the time  ;D

I am not going to talk about this in detail, because I believe this has been discussed to death (quite litterally I might add!).

One thing I want to say is that I do firmly believe that if the ship was to keep the engines ahead that the ship may not have suffered suffient damage to sink the ship. Of course the ship would still have been damaged, but I don't think it would have suffered as much damage as she did.

Reversing the thrust when turning a ship is the worst thing you can do on a large vessel, as it counteracts the ships movements. I think if they had kept the engines full ahead and hard to port then the ship may have suffered less damage.

Just my thoughts - go try it out on ship simulator and you'll see my theory ;)

RMS Titanic was christened, Britannic was the ship not christened. Titanic was christened in Liverpool, the city name below the ship's name on stern is the city the ship was christened in after sea trials. Like Queen Mary 2 was christened in Southampton after sea trials.
