oooooo-ooo.  :o

That looks expensive. It also looks like it will wash up on the beach around here soon.

Perhaps this.. ;)

Nah. That would have sunk it completely, while leaving the yacht unscathed, surely?

wonder if anyone was hurt. maybe she got a list and the weight caused the cables to break and when she was righted, the containers fell.

Reporst are conflicting, but they think it was caused by a combination of severe weather (typhoon) and possible bad lashing.

I did notice that on the ship, it said it's name was Ital Florida. I do believe that means that it travels to italy and florida. Perhaps it was in the middle of a hurricane while in the vicinity of Florida. Just a guess ::).

Oh my god, that looks very expensive indeed - i thought a wave may of caused it - but it would have to be pretty damn big, and the containers are secured

EDIT Just researched the ship, she was travelling at 16kn in 10m waves  :o

The ITAL FLORIDA sails between the far east (hong kong I believe) and the Adriatic sea.

Looking at the photos, I would guess she was hit by high seas on the starboard quarter which crushed the lower tiers of containers. The rest would follow quite rapidly after that I should think. Just gravity at it's most destructive. The lashings probably would not be able to take that kind of strain if the ship was rolling heavily after the initial damage. each 20foot container would have a weight of over 20tonnes and the 40foot ones over 40tonnes.

It seems to be incredibly good luck that the entire cargo didn't end up as flotsam (or jetsam)! It looks a pretty close thing.

Hehe...  Well it is going to Italy, as the Adriatic is between Italy and the former Yugoslavian countries.

But it's just a name. The Sherpa doesn't actually go to the Nepalese highlands either...  ;D

After 22 posts all I can tell you is that I wouldn't want to be in one of those containers waiting to arive on my long lost brothers front doorstep just to jump out with all of my friends that I met at a small airport on Nantucket and yell "Surprise"... when that happened.  :D

What's the matter, no one has ever seen that episode of "Wings". ;)

Then it should be going to florida..... and Italy ;D.
Title: Re: You don't want to know!
Post by: Mad_Fred on July 09, 2008, 20:07:14
It might still be doing that, although it's far fetched.  Because..

There are many more Florida's than just the State of Florida in the USA, you know..  ;)

It's a province in Bolivia, a city in Brasil, a town in Argentinia, a township in Chili, a town in Colombia, a region in Honduras, a town in Puerto Rico, a town in Uruguay aswell as a department of Uruguay, not to mention towns in the States of Massachusetts, Missouri, New York and Ohio. Also there is an island group named the Florida islands in the Salomons Islands and a lot more..   ;D

So perhaps there's a Florida near it's current destination in the Far East aswell.... Or maybe they just thought it sounded nice.  ;D

* Smartypants off *

Fred

That was up in alaska, it was actually in the middle of the day but the photo was taken during low tide. Tugs assisted in re-entering the craft in water and inspected the hull, no damage was done.

well the tide duznt go out and in at the same time each day usaly low tide is about 3mins after the day befor so low tide can be at 3:00  one day and 3.03 the next but thair are 2 low tides in 24 hours. so the captan of this ship could have looked at the tidel chart of the week befor by acadent then could have lefft the boat to come back and finde out that he has no water lefft under his boat. very easy thing to do if ur in a rush .

Most places have two tides per day (almost) and each high tide is around 30-40 minutes later than the one before.

The moon causes the tides.

The moon goes around the earth once every 28 and a quarter days (roughly).  ;)

Is that where I left my boat? Doh!

Now you know where I really live....

From the Northern Pacific, go into the Alexander Archipelago (between Yacobi Island and Inian Islands), past Lemesurier Island and then hard to port, and up past Young Island and Strawberry Island. Keep going Northwards past Willoughby Island, the NW past Drake Island. About 45 miles further on, you'll find my Island just before the entrance to Tarr Inlet.

Drop in for coffee anytime you're passing! Call first in case we're out.

I have heard that Marmite is actually a medicine..

It cures a wide range of things...

Like headaches, broken bones, PMS, athlete's foot, ulcers, gastritis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, shell shock, pink eye, a series of psychological disorders and of course dyslexia..   ::)

And the only drawback is that it tastes like licking a cat's bum..  that's not too bad, I reckon...   ;D

Brovil, anyone?

Well Terry, to answer one part of that question, I would have to divulge information about my research that is only divulged on a need to know basis...

And since answering the other part would reveal which part is the part that would not be answered since the answer is considered to be top secret, I therefor cannot answer the other part either..

But it wasn't pretty... no Sir.. not pretty at all...

And that's all I care.. and dare.. to say...  ;D

Well, don't overwork yourself ;D. Did you know that people with more to do in their lives have more stress, which can lead to depression :(. So I mean it when I say don't overwork yourself ;).
Title: Re: You don't want to know!

Stress is different things to different people. For me, it is incredibly stressful to not do much. Boredom is deadly. Lots going on is fun.

Well, it is also confirmed that the harder you work, the harder your body is working, so that is not good for an old person. I am not saying you are ;D, but when you get to be old, play a board game or play cricket. How do you play cricket ????

I never get bored ;D, Ever ever ever. I can't remember the last time I got bored :D. I can be occupied with pretty much anything that is givin to me. When I am having fun, must people whould never think what I am doing is fun ;D.

Thats true, very true........unfortunately somebody i know who has just passed away would have loved another second in his life, but there we go :-\ life can be harsh, so, take every moment you have in your life seriously, and make the most of every second you have. You only life once.

I am old from your viewpoint. 54. But, most people have trouble keeping up with me. I believe differently. I have noticed that when people retire they sometimes start to relax and rapidly become dead. My belief is that as long as I keep going and doing things that I find hard, I'll be able to do them.

A couple of years ago, I had a bad reaction to some treatment for an old injury. (Found out I'm allergic to aspirin). The upshot of it was that it damaged my heart quite badly. I was being told to "take things easy" and so on. But on the second day, I got up out of the hospital bed and walked around the outside of the hospital. Did about a mile. Six weeks later, I went on a 12 mile charity walk and raised two thousand pounds for a cancer charity. Now, no-one would know I have a damaged heart. My specialist says he's never know anyone recover so fast or so well. And I have Type I diabetes, which makes it even more incredible.

So, don't relax. Keep pushing harder and do things that you think you can't!

Wow, what a story :). I don't think that work is the answer for me. I have fun with whatever I do, whether it be sleeping, or walking, or waiting, I have lots of fun :D. I am like the slowskies on that comcast commericial ;D.

PS Don't see the Comcast commercial over here. But I get the idea, I think.

Well, most people don't think sleeping or walking is fun.

The comcast commercial with the slowskies: The commercial is about 2 turtles who's family name is the slowskies. They enjoy having DSL because you have to wait so long for DSL connection. They do not like the high speed internet comcast offers. Get it now :P ;D?

People with sailing boats often do that so they can scrape the barnacles off the bottom. Mind you, that one looks like it needs a good antifoul as well, unless they're in the middle of that when this was taken.
Title: Re: You don't want to know!

The first thing I thought was that those pilings shouldn't even be there but now that you mention it,  :-\

It's remotely smart, if you have a strong keel. ;)
Title: Re: You don't want to know!
Post by: TerryRussell on July 23, 2008, 19:25:41
I guess that if the keel won't take that weight, you have a keel that's likely to fall off! I've seen that happen once. Following a fairly shabby sailing boat into Yarmouth (Isle of Wight, near Cowes), and suddenly it rolled over. Strangely, the underside (now the top-side) was smooth!

It stopped straight away as the mast stuck in the mud. Nobody was injured, but they did look surprised. We picked them out of the water and anything we could see floating, but goodness knows what went to the bottom.

Strangest Mayday Relay I've ever sent.

Title: Re: You don't want to know!
Post by: TerryRussell on July 24, 2008, 17:39:45
Not as far as I know. I think "matchwood" was the outcome. It was very old.

Usually, if the keel bolts drop out of wooden sailing ship, it indicates that the timbers are rotten.
