captain mike
we should go into business, there's a big demand for the right ship sim controller.

I use a Saitek AV8R-01 (aka Aviator)
Reasonably priced.

That's a nice joystick, duo-throttle if I'm correct.. :)
-
The AV8R is the stick I've been looking at recently:

I've just ordered LEGO: Indiana Jones though, so I'll be keeping myself busy with that for now :D

A virtual controller might be easier!

Good Game... I'm on the third movie :)
I'm waiting for this one.

I already own the Railroad Driver version. ;)

Might have a long time to wait, it says it will be ready for SS06!! If they haven't met that deadline then they might not be ready before SS08 is replaced by SS09!!

i would like to point out that that has no bow trusters

That's why it isn't done yet... :D
Plus there are another 50+ programmable buttons that you could use. :-\

hi cm
sorry i missed you last nite. i was going into marseille & fell asleep at the wheel.
next thing i knew i hit the breakwater & got dropped out the server.
i thought it best to go get a beer after that.
hehe
cheers ....... cj
-
Hello cj
By the time I had had my beer it was around 2245 and there was no one around on any server at all!! I don't know where everyone gets to these days, maybe it's the long warm, sunny evemings that keeps people away.
Maybe tonight

I also sometimes hook up my old Microsoft Sidewinder and use two sticks. This setup works great for the car ferry.

i use a logitech joystick, however, i would rather play with the mouse and keyboard because when the joystick is in the upright middle position, there is still speed and rudder degrees applied to the ship. i suggest that you stick with theb mouse and keyboard
-
guys
i've tried joystick, joypad & wheel.
wheel is definately the best.
captain jack
-
i dont see the point of a wheel as somtimes i make long shallow turns that somtimes take 20/30 minitets as i turn slowly once out to sea
-
i have a wheel aswell, but i think that you would be better of using it with smaller, faster ships, it can become very tricky and frustrating when it comes to vessels like the Pride of Rotterdam and Vermaas
-
well small ships you are never going to be doning a long trip so that would help but large ships you need somthing that dose not return to the center when you let go
-
Joys & wheels... :D :D
Any boat or ship got one of these so if you have a controller that looks like like one of these it all should be OK.
BTW, also a MS Sidewinder user...love that joy ;D
When we have large hardware panels made to work with SS then we can start talking... (sweet dreams) ;D ;D ;D
-
I've always found it kind of funny that all the throttles in stern-drive and out-board boats are called "Remote Controls"
It took me a while to figure it out but then it hit me. :-\
If it wasn't remote then you would be sitting back there with the engine pushing the RPM knob. ;D
-
Funny, remote control for me sounds like the control with the small knobs that you use when turning your TV on/off, increase/decrease sound level etc. So now I know why you should not have a remote control with you when you visit the harbor for fishing... :P

ok paul i understand why u don't like a wheel, because when u let go it returns to midships.
i use an old logitech wheel with the power disconnected, so when you put the wheel over to say, starboard 20 & let go, it stays there. it don't spring back, you have to move it back, which is real easy.
this would be ideal for a long turn.
i don't know if all wheels work the same though.

Isn't this just a question of turning on "precision steering"..?

I posted a message, where I explained how I was using a Saitek X45 as a rudder controller for Ship Sim.
In fact, I only use the throttle control as a rudder control :
When you set the throttle control to 50%, it gives 0% rudder, 100% for full left rudder, and 0% for full right rudder. The throttle stays in position, so you can handle your rudder very accurately.
Moreover, the Saitek X45 throttle offers two wheels, that I use for aft and bow thrusters (on the sherpa).
For engine controls, I use a Saitek Throttle quadrant :
which give me the ability to handle right and left engines separately. This joystick configuration is really perfect for handling conventionnal ships (PoR, Vermaas, Sherpa ....), but is totally useless with azimuth propelled ships (Red Eagle, Bugsier, Ocean Star) ... That's why I now only use keyboard.

can you use those for reverse throttle or will they only work for foward throttle
-
I'm pretty sure you can, capt. Liftpoint..It's quite easy to do in the controls menu of ShipSim.. ;)

awesome thanks man...... :D

you're welcome..If you need some help with the settings, let us know.. :)

can you use both joystick and throttle quadrant that comes with the Saitek X45 ?? and can you use the Logitech G25 wheel on the game aswell??
Many Thanks
-
this is what i use it a saitek x52
-
here is a pic of it
-
I use the Saitek X52 also. I borrowed nubbs' photo so I didn't have to take one. Some of the main controls I use are:
1) Left engine fore and aft. 2) Slider - Rudder port and starboard. 3) Rotary dial - Both engines fore and aft.
4) Button on back - Horn. 5) Stick forward and backward - Right engine fore and aft. Side to side - rudder port and starboard. 6) Hat left and right - Aft thruster port and starboard. 7) Hat left and right - Forward thruster port and starboard.
I have the hats, dials and buttons set for other controls but these are the main ones I use.

An excellent idea. I have the Saitek X-52. It a very good controller. I've just finished customizing a profile for Flightsim X, and it works well. So I'm now starting on a profile for SS2008. Good to see some other Captains having success with it.
-

Of course. If you set up correctly the axes in ship sim controls menu, when the throttle levers are at 50%, you are at 0 RPM.
-
That's how I set the left throttle and slider for the rudder on the X52. Mid point or 50 on the throttle is 0 engine speed. Pull back from center for reverse engine power and forward from center for forward engine power. I set the slider in the center for 0 rudder and slide back for port and forward for starboard. The slider isn't used if I'm steering with the right stick. It works well with the both engines dial. I can set the speed I want fore or aft with the both engines dial and set the slider for turning and they both stay in position so you don't have to hold on for long passages, just make minor adjustments to stay on course.
Russ K
PS- The right stick is self centering so center fore and aft is 0 engine speed and center left and right is 0 rudder.
-
i know u can use the X52 but can u use the Saitek X45 or the Logitech G25 wheel???

it has already been saids hundreds of times : you can use whatever joystick you want. If Windows recognizes it as a joystick, off course.
-
Here's my setup:
1. Throttle forward/reverse (both engines)
2. Rudder
3. Thruster 1
4. Thruster 2
5. Horn
6.a-d Camera views
7.a-b Moorage/chart
But for some ships I prefer the keyboard..
-
The reason I have a set up for using the two engines independently is so I can have one in forward and the other in reverse for maneuvering. You can turn a two engined ship like the Sherpa around almost in it's own length.

Ya know they used a cut up sateik throttle for the stick shift in the movie "Speed Racer" I saw it in the comercials. ;D
I have a setup that looks very much like that for my Flight Simulator use, for ship sim I just use the key board because it doesn't feel right to be controling a ship with a stick. :-\
