I've searched repeatedly, but thus far, I have found multiple possible locations for Peir 59 in New York Harbor! I am trying to see where the Titanic was supposed to dock!
And before some one goes stupid and thinks Peir 54 was where it was supposed ot arrive, or posts a picture of Peir 54 thinking it's Peir 59 (and you know someone will!), let me make this loud and clear:
TITANIC WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO DOCK AT PEIR 54!!!!! ALSO, PEIR 59 IS NO LONGER STANDING!
I have been looking for at least 2 days now, trying to find it! Sorry if I'm yelling too much, but I'm a bit frustrated because of it!
GENERAL LOCATION WILL NOT DO! I NEED SOMETHING ALLONG THE LINES OF LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE, OR A PICTURE WITH THE PEIR IDENTIFIED AND SOME SURROUNDING FETURES TO IDENTIFY THE LOCATION!

On the North River at the foot of 23rd Street. Get a NYC map. There is a small boat marina there now.

Guys,
The whole Chelsea Piers area was completely rebuilt as a tourist and recreation site and the historic piers are not precisely in their original locations. If you try to dock Titanic there, you will find they are only half the length required.
I went to college across the river from that area, in Hoboken, and paid part of my tuition as a deckhand on a harbor tug.

Marty

I've already spent time searching maps of New York and i found Pier 59, but there is nothing in the game where the pier is meant to be - really should be there though, the P&O Terminal is in Rotterdam so why not the famous Pier :)
-
from what i can make out it should be here
-
maybe they can model it to look like it did in it's hayday (nudge, nudge)
-
This is approximately where Titanic would have berthed:
-
if you look at the map pier 59 is the first pier not the 3rd you are docked at pier 61

they have proberly got shorter since being used by ships but i dount they have moved place

Both the Westside and the Eastside of Manhattan are very different today from what they were in 1912. Different, in fact from what they were in the 1950s, when I plied those waters.
When were you there, Paul?
-
i have never been there
-
ok hear is the piers before being turned into o golf corce and here is them after they have not moved
-
Hi Pauljanaway.
Interesting thread. Determining where Pier 59 is, that's most interesting. As you'll be aware, Marty is probably the ultimate authority, being a New Jersey lad and living and working within feet of the pier. Anything he says is pure gold as a source of information.
One thing, could you do me a favour and use the edit button to add further comments a few minutes later, instead of making lots of short posts?
I know that there is a competitive streak between some of you to have huge post counts, but I really don't want to start my moderator career by having to tell anyone off if they overstep the mark. I know that you're aware of the Forum rules about accetable behaviour here, but for anyone else who isn't, please read them at http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,26.0.html
Thanks! ;D

when did you become a mod dident notes it yesterday

I thought it would have berthed in a north/south manner, and there is a "Peir 59 Studios" that apears to be in the location 3 docks north of where mvsmith berthed that seemed perfect for that....
Then again, looking at how the Lusitania docked before its last departure, that wouldn't be the case....
-
well that is where the map says pier 59 is as my pic of titanic
ok if you kook at the pic with the titanic on it you will see the just ahead of the titanic on the right the docke extents where the building should be as shown in the real pic also on the far left you will see the road and land extents towords the water again shown in the real pic

I know, it's just there seem to be so many possibilities for the location.
Are you sure that pic has the 1912 location?
-
well that is a pic of peir 59 as it stoud before 1990 when it was turned into a golf range so it sould be the right location

A speedboat pointing at it:
-
as far as i know it is
-
i wish the arch was there :'(
-
any way do you agree the pier 59 is now a golf range
-
as far as i know it is
What is that, my very picture? lol
and yes, pauljanaway1.
-
ok now all we need to agree on is where the golf corce is in game
also in responce to an erlyer post the reson why the piers are to short is because The Army, which controlled the location and size of piers, refused to let any piers extend beyond the existing pierhead line of the North River (the navigation name for the Hudson River south of 30th Street). Ship lines were reluctant to build north of 23rd Street because infrastructure was already in place, including the High Line Rail line and a train station near the river at 23rd Street.
-
lol. look what i did.
-
and it even looks like it fits
-
i made it smaller :D
-
well i will stick by my guns saying pier 59 is hear

we need a Cunard ship to go with the Cunard Peir!
-
yes shame it is missing need the arch on pier 54 and the building on the white star line pier 59
-
In the 1930s a new set of piers for ocean liners was built farther north, and the older piers including the original pier 59 were converted to a cargo terminal. At that time a new numbering convention for piers was adopted: The pier number is the street number plus 40. This puts the new location for a pier 59 at 19th street. The Chelsea piers suffered heavy fire damage in 1947 and were rebuilt. At that time the new numbering was applied, putting the new “Pier 59†where it is now.
-
So you think the Titanic was heading for the peir directly north of it?
-
as we dont know were they moved it to im going to keep using the pier 59 as today
