Wow. Is he making the vessel complete "walkable"?

At the moment it will just be the top 3 decks as i want to get this finished but i've been caught up in other stuff like work at home problems (nothing to worry about).

Also i am waiting for some more interior shots so i know how certain things look like but i may just have to guess going by the photos i have and the cad file i have as well but i will get there (hopefully as quick as i can so i can get on with other projects).

Simon.

Thats up to V-Step as this is there model and they would decide if i would be aloud to convert it to VS.

Being that the model will be used to generate funds for the vessel itself, I would not think they would allow it to be in VS as well.

Wow. AWESOME work. With all of these rooms and cabins and such, how far of trips did this vessel undergo? It looks like she went some distances in order to have such accommodations.

Greetings,
Yes,Dave but remember, when that vessel came out,for the first time. That was in a time that there was a lot of crewman still needed. If you compair it with now these days, every crewmember is expensive.
A older friend of mine,he was on the seagoing vessel, when he was young, and there where on his vessel about 40 member onboard.
Now these days it's maybe half of that amount,or maybe less.

Marc

That is a good point. Automation has changed a lot. However, it is interesting to see that the ship would maintain having so many accommodations and not converting them, unless the vessel did so and maintained some space for occasional passengers and longer range missions.

Finished modelling of the main deck interior with some texturing done.

All i need to do now is finish of the bridge deck then start texturing everything.

Will also have to remember to add handrails to the main alleyways as well.

Don'tforget -- Elbe was a seagoing tug (now retired and a restoration project) and as such needed 2 full watches, both deck and engineer.  The modernization spoken of didn't happen to her because she was no longer really in active service by then.

Cheers,
Michael

Seagoing tugs are a totally different beast than their harbor counterparts . . .  And I love seagoing tugs. Those old Spambot are tough.

Hello all.

Been a while with updates but here it is.

Today i finally finished the Elbe model after a lot of re-doing stuff etc. I recently got proper plans of the 3 interior decks and basically re-built all 3 from scratch (apart from the chairs) and it actually came out better than before and with less polygons.

The model and bits are now with V-Step to do there magic and get it in the game.

So i have updated all the interior shots here as they will look in the game for your viewing pleasure.

http://www.simondr.co.uk/stuff/wip/elbe.html

I think this is the longest i have ever been on one model and hope i don't be on any others this long in the future.

Simon.

Dude, this ship looks beautifull, and so much detail, whats the polycount?

Main model not including interiors 47481
Top deck interior 15233
Middle deck interior 11023
Bottom deck interior 13224

The interior decks can be switched on and off during game play so shouldn't affect game play much.

47481 Polygons!!! :o
If you put that in the BF2 engine it would freeze up the whole game, i wonder how Shipsim's engine would handle that?

For BF2 the maximum polycount for a model is something like 8000, anything above that would lag incredibly.
Title: Re: "Elbe"project.Comments and Updates
Post by: Ship Sim on August 16, 2007, 20:08:14
Yes it is. Titanic had 800,000 poly count. I think

I can't believe the detail this model has!!   :o

Finally we have fantastic interiors and the detail is incredible. I love this ship I can't wait to put her on the rough seas!

Also I love the attention to detail even on the interior and at last the wheelhouse has more than just 1 column for the nav controls.

Well Done Simon you are the master at creating these 3D models. If you quit I'm going to be deeply saddened.

Could I make a small request? Could you think about creating a wooden boat such as a classic cruiser or something? We could really use at least 1 wooden boat in the game  ;)
Title: Re: "Elbe"project.Comments and Updates
Post by: simondr on August 18, 2007, 15:28:24
I have started a small wooden boat called Bluebird of Chelsea which would be nice in SS which you can see an image of the model here http://www.simondr.co.uk/stuff/wip/wip.html and how it will look here http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/LowerThamesMedway_Co/Cruise-20060614-297_Bluebird-of-Chelsea_900.jpg and here http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/LowerThamesMedway_Co/Cruise-20060614-326_Bluebird-of-Chelsea_900.jpg

If you have some ideas of boats you would like to see then let me know the only problem would be getting plans of them.

This one i got the plans free with an issue of radi control boats magazine.
Title: Re: "Elbe"project.Comments and Updates
Post by: Captain Spencer on August 18, 2007, 15:40:26
Wow that's exactly what I was after!!!  ;D

I love all the boats you have on that page. Specially the wooden one and the paddle steamer, they're both great. I see you have a battle ship too  ;D

EDIT: Will your completed boats be included in the SS08 Patch or futher additions? I sure hope they are  :)

Any further boats i make that go into the game will probably be part of the subscription service that they are planning. It also depends if they can get permission from the owners of the boats to let them put them in the game. For vessels that are no longer around like the Strongbow i'm not sure what will happen there.

I can't see the Nanuchka going in but when its done it will be available for Virtual Sailor.

The others we will have to wait and see.
