I know i haven't been playing this sim very long but those high scores for 2008 are they real? the rescue swimmer and powerboat i can only shave off maybe a second on my times and thats full throttle. if you cant go any faster then how is it possible those highest scores?
the rescue swimmer it takes me at least 2:12 to get the swimmer. and no hope in hell to get to the boat to get even close to a high score. so whats the secrete?
thanks

Hello there...
They are definitely for real as i saw when i was ranked #1 on one mission! But i also can´t understand the Times on some missions....these guys are damn fast! ;) on another topic i heard that it got to do with the power of your PC also! The mission time starts when your PC begins to initialise the mission or something like that! so the faster your PC is that earlier you can start do sail and that might give you some seconds for the highscore! but i´m not an expert on that so maybe someone else could explain it to us a bit more detailed!
Cheers Jonny

Im sure some people modify the handling files, im not sure though, im more of a free roaming guy :P
-

Yeah, that's definetly true. I tried lowering the details and it runs faster, allowing me to complete some mission in a shorter time; I also remember a topic where was pointed out that some mission had wrong times because the mission itself had been modified; the mission being longer now than in the beginning, it was impossible to reach that record-time anymore; I wonder if that bug was corrected.
Ciao,
Corrado

Greetings,
I have the same feeling, about this.
Like the mission resque a swimmer, you cannot go faster as full trottle.I've seen a score of 1.and a bit more for that.Well,i dont know how many engines they have on that vessel.
On the otherhand,i'm not so interested in score's,i enjoy my game withhout that competition.Scores are not that importent to me.

While cpu speed can have some effect on the time to complete a mission, and posts have reported inconsistencies in velocity versus distance/time, I suspect that some players are modifying the unlocked missions via the mission editor.
For this reason, I think that completion times are meaningless.
-
Sadsid's time on "Titanic voyage to New York" 52minutes(?) i think, thets crazy!
-
New leader...Jskipper with 50minutes....Sadsid had 51:)
-
Manipulating missions is a bad thing!
I´m proud of my ranked #1 on "spare parts for Marseille" without any modifications!!!
It took me a long time to get that fast!
And i guess some of the other ranked #1 had to work a lot for it also!
If theres someone modifying there missions....that really piss me of!!!! >:( >:( >:( (sorry for bad words)
If thats really true i wish the highscores to be reset or even turned off!!!
Cheers Jonny

I don't really care about times at all, apart from those race/stunt missions with the powerboat they are essentially useless.
No one in real life aims for fastest times (well ferry services have to run in time and stuff like that, obviously, but they will not sacrifice safety for speed). If these fast times that the high score lists are made up of, would have been achieved in real life, there would have been major violations of the rules and corners would be have been cut which would have been incredibly dangerous.
So the whole high score thing is very unrealistic and I actually think has no added value in a simulator.
-
OK looks like I'm not the only one in this boat (pardon the pun).
Yes i suspected PC loading times were related also. I also noticed up to 40 sec gap when changing scenes and i am sure that is added to my times because my notebook took so long to load the next scene.
And i too also noticed when initialization was finished but game not quite visible i could hold down the accelerator and take off before i could see the scene/boat.
I would like to see times ONLY start when you start your take off. And i would certainly like to see the stop watch stop when scene is changing and ONLY start when you take off again in the new scene.
that way the clock doesn't start until the accelerator is pushed. I personally like the competition to beat times to the best of our abilities. It may not be real life for the most part but ads an aliment of fun/arcade to the game. I know its primarily a sim first so i like the sim aspect also to get down and serious. but introducing competition and soon to be multiplayer allows for it to be quite lively and ads a needed element in any sim game i think.
that would be more fair?
-
I definatly agree with u dude. I would like 2 see that happen in newer versions.
-
It is in fact quite unrealistic to have a highscore on missions like "spare parts for Marseille" (although your boss might be happy about the quick delivery of his cargo) but as Razgo said...the highscores are just for us! I agree that they got nothing to do with the real handling of boats, because that rather consider about not to damage the vessel! But this is a game and not real life and cheating is shit....in real life AND in game!!!
Cheers Jonny
-
I really don't know how I got no. 1 in mission "rescue yachtsmen in trouble",
a tiny bit of skill and LOTS of luck.. ;D
-
cheating is shit....in real life AND in game!!!
I could not agree more. Zero tolerance!
And I also agree that having high score lists adds another dimension to this game (we can say sim all we want but all sims are just sophisticated games, really) and appeals to a lot of players. And in case of the powerboat missions it's even realistic aswell, as I said. I was kinda pleased when I got a #1 ranking too. But someone threw that powerboat around the circuit a bit faster now. Bugger! ;D
I didn't mean to say I was against it, I just don't really care about them, is what I meant.

I have no doubt for the most part we are all honest with the exception of few. I think its great that saltydog got 9th position 1:15!!!!! holly cows! and metalfork No.1 .
there isn't a whole lot you can do to improve in the rescue a swimmer accept try and stop faster in the circle so the green thing spins around. thats where the critical part seems to be.
but the power boat jumps has a lot more variations because a slight right or left turn can add a second or two to your times. and too much air time might actually slow you down instead of shorter jumps and power in the water. I know i have been way too air born hitting those small jumps to the point of looking for a parachute :). so that wouldn't help me.
/edit
I just loaded fast craft sight seeing in Hamburg and it froze in the opening scene and i couldn't click off the ropes. eventually it came good and I noticed the game clock had already ticked over 01:12 to my time before i go the rope off. So definitely something to look into.

There goes the Hales Trophy...
Problem is that some people are probably manouevering ships in ways they shouldnt be. For example, it takes X minutes to leave port in PoR, but some people can do it in half that by getting a few % damage- which doesn't affect your time.

Thats the surrealistic thing about the highscores! but i tried to do all my highscores without any damage (so far i remember ;))
It´s just a sad thing that some people need to cheat their highscores...I just can´t imagine a reason for that!!!
Except for making other players upset and compensate something!!! (SRY)
It´s just unfair and allows no excuse!!!
And i really apologize for my rank #7 on "A massive towing job for Fairmount"...I forgot to change the player profile before giving it a try to get the fast times! (It´s quite easy if you don´t take the Eirik Raude to the last waypoint, but just the Sherpa :))
Cheers...Jonny

It's the same situation in the mission "Container Loading" (btw. one of my favorites):
I was able to improve my score by "throwing" the containers on board of the Vermaas. To be more precise: When the container is hanging over the onboard position just let it fall down, there is a good chance that the container will find its way. Don't think about the chinaware or archaeological treasures inside of the container - there must be a reason why assurance companies exist! :D
-
Johnny
That's the reason why I don't upload my scores... I try to do it right (I find it more fun) but my 'scores' look bad. Groeenegaard had a suggestion a while back that each % damage gives you a big time penalty. Maybe an idea.
Penguin,
If they really did handle containers like that... insurance companies wouldnt exist for long! Has anyone seen a container drop? I saw the result of one at a railway freight terminal (not actually seeing it happen)... It made a bit of a mess of the train underneath.
I wouldn't like to be the one on the ship deck shouting up instructions!

Thats a very good idea!!! I would really appreciate that! I do not worry about that i could not hold my highscores anymore!!!! ;) ;)
But i guess we have to wait until someone worked on it! Then we can start a new discussion again if the one did a good job or not! ;D
cheers... Jonny
PS: for all germans...there is a german ShipSim Chat! unfortunately no english one! And here´s the link...

Hi everybody,
I just wanted to post a comment on the ranking based on the celerity to complete a mission. Personally I don't give any importance to that ranks but on the way the mission is done. Sure you can complete missions fast even with big ships but if you use engines and thrusters at theirs limits constantly for that, i don't see any interest in that. I prefere trying to manoeuvre using normal time and speed, even if it must take 1 hour to get berth. I definitly don't want to make it in 20 min (for instance), using engines at 100% ahead and astern and thrusters at full power...
So just to say, if it was possible, a system of ranking based on the respect of the engine limits and procedures could be added to the game and be chosen by players like me in the place of the time ranking.
(could do the same remark for the towing missions, what equipment (cable and bollards) could stand a towing at full thrust and speed? And if you keep a speed of 3 or 4 knots as it is in real, you can't expect to win the 1st rank.)
-
Take off? ???
Stu
lol, the term i used "take off" simply means "leave", or "accelerate away". basically at the point of acceleration then the clock starts.

Makes me wonder how many people are making the passengers jump six feet to board the water taxi.
It takes longer, but it just seems proper to bring the taxi alongside the pier and not just hold the speed
below 1knot to complete the waypoint.

Greetings,
Well,i think accept for the races
That we realy are in no need of speedrecords, simulation use to be build as how good you do the missions.
I mean sailing, without damage, the docking has to be good.
However,like i said it's my opinion.
The races, that another story, you have to be the fastest(which i'm not).
Maybe there are some different views.

Thats true...but our main problem is that the highscore system is not build to consider how good you have done the mission!! there is nothing programmed which considers your damage, if you sailed through shallow water with a big ship instead of using the special fairways and all stuff like that!
Unfortunately it just about speed and nothing else! This is a thing where VSTEP maybe should spend some time on for the next ShipSim!
Cheers....Jonny
-
i think that the highscores thing is a very good idea, for people that are competitive( which I am so this is bias) that is why I think that in the next ship simulator there could be something about having finished the mission with least damage and the fastest time put together...if it's possible :)
-
I think getting rewarded for style as well as speed is a good idea..
A kind of combined system points/time
Though in some missions, it doesn't really matter how you get there, just do it FAST..! :D
But even then points could be deducted for damage caused to your, or other boats..
-
I think that to gain a particular rank you must have X number of missions completed (at any speed) accident free to progress.
A bit like they have on the forum ;) but with damage considered.
Stu
-
sounds like a good idea to me ;)
-
sounds good to me too. I try and complete ALL missions with 0% damage. perhaps something like 3 missions before we get ranked?
-
Well, I try to have some fun sailing in free roam and in missions.
My goal is to really get the ship against the dock in a realistic way.
I think highscores shouldn't be on X number of missions but on quality of sailing.
Here's an example of what I like in shipsim.
I think there wasn't more than 1 metre left on each side when entering and turning the ship.
-
I agree, the whole point of Ship Sim in my mind is to complete the missions with no damage. If I gain damage during the early stages then I reset and start again. If I'm over half way I complete the mission to see what else I need to do then try it again until I can do it with no damage.
-
The simple solution is to set the damage threshold to 0. Missions could not, then, be completed with any damage.
The default for Damage threshold in Mission Editor is -1 (allows the mission to be completed with any amount of damage).

The score system is a fake. It's obviously that a better reward system should be implemented where you just don't get a icon in your profile to show - "hey... you're the captain!". :P

I agree with JHB. Anybody with half a brain and some time can be captain or skipper in everything. I think it should be alot harder to get that rating.

I agree—three-quarter brain minimum, plus possession of appropriate headgear. :)

I must say the real problem was the highscores of the forum and not the imaginary ranks in the game!
I think the in game ranking is a very good idea so you can see actually what is your status and what else kind of missions do i have to play to get better on this and that!
And the ranking does not push your highscores to a better!!!
So it might be more helpful to find some more ideas how the highscore ranking could be improved!!!
Cheers...Jonny

Yeah or you may end up like a land crab just like me :P

surely the dev's or mission creators have tested these missions and have some idea on what times are reasonable..?
Currently doing the off shore supplier mission as per the waypoints and instructions and the current posted scores are definately cheats. 29 mins and 49 mins. I'm not even close to the rig or the ocean and the time is over an hour at max engine speed. The way point marker top left shows 120' i'm I going the wrong way?
No
The mini compass on my mini map shows the oppersite way 285'... and I'm sailing as per mission instructions.
edit
made it out to the North sea time 1 hour 16 mins, then had to choose which sea i wanted to enter on a world map... whats that about?
Wipe fake scores off, stop players from sailing the wrong way out to reach the ocean or completing the missions with the wrong boat this mission is drop off the pilot to the cargo ship and return the pilot boat back then take the cargo ship out to sea, there is a time saver which means towing the pilot boat a short way back across the channel and dropping it off until later.
or its pointless having a scoring system to start with.

Malsop,
That’s about missing the trigger waypoint for environment change and seeing the tick for the missed waypoint in the previous environment. That mission is busted, and so far as I know, has never been fixed.
There are many posts about the troubles with this, and a few other missions.
One possible cause for not being able to see a waypoint is saving and restarting the mission, but I don’t know if anyone has done that in this mission.
