Title: cargo ship vanishes =-o
Post by: cptnchris on August 13, 2009, 09:31:24
LONDON - -- First the cargo ship reported it had been attacked in waters off Sweden. Then it sailed through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. And then it disappeared.

The Arctic Sea was supposed to make port in Algeria with its cargo of timber on Aug. 4. More than a week later, there's no sign of the ship or its Russian crew.

"If this is a criminal act, it appears to be following a new business model," Marine intelligence expert Graeme Gibbon-Brooks told Sky News.

The mystery began July 24, when the 15 crew members of the Arctic Sea said they were tied up and beaten by up to 10 men who boarded the ship off the Swedish coast and that the men left in a high-speed inflatable boat. The masked men identified themselves as police officers, but Swedish police said they had not been searching ships in that area.

On July 28, the Arctic Sea made routine contact with British maritime authorities as it passed through the busy English Channel, giving its identity and destination.

Where the ship was next spotted is uncertain. Russian news reports say the last contact was July 30 when the ship was in the Bay of Biscay. But the Portuguese navy said the ship never passed through its waters.

Experts are very concerned, but also wary of attributing the disappearance to bandits.

"It's not the kind of area where pirates would find it easy to operate," an International Maritime Bureau official said.

Yeah, I saw this on the news. Aperently someone must of switched the transponder off. Makes you wonder what happened to it, It can't of just dissapeared. And I also wondered why other ships haven't seen her...She'd surely pass traffic if she was around somewhere, wouldn't she?

Jack.

Lots of rumours going around, like she may be carrying more than just wood..
The Russians are out in the Atlantic looking for her, even with subs..

Makes you wonder, It's quite possible, I suppose. I guess we'll have to see what comes out of it, maybe we'll find out soon, maybe not.

Either way, I hope crew and captain are safe!

OK. I understand "Attention Crew. This is your Captain speaking. As you know, we we're boarded by pirates who tied us all up and beat us. Then just left us... Anyway, we are continuing our journey and we won't bother reporting piracy to port authorities or making contact with head office... Just continue with your work."

This one has bells on it! They were hijacked, the hijackers leave... and the crew just continue on like nothing has happened...

PS Anyone want to buy some pine wood? Going cheap? 10,000 tonnes available to the right price.

The missing ship has been spotted 200 nautical miles off one of the Cape Verde islands.

I just went through the history of its path and here it is in the English channel on the 24th of July.

T2 IS still here after major disasters. like a major hurricane, a torpedoed 62 times, and needed the biggest repairs on earth (Skutchup Earth that is).

T2 is made with 10 layers of metal hull, making her the invincible ship :2thumbs: So Are all but Titanicana, OSL ran out of metal for the hull of Titanicana but now has that 10 layers after her reconstruction as a ferry now. but back on topic instead of talking about Titanic 2, Olympic 2 (Now no longer Olympic 2 (now is SS Olympus for Summertime Cruise Lines) Britannic 2 and Titanicana.

Very unusual indeed...You'd think it would be passing other ships somewhere...and it's not like they can avoid eachother, or hide, is it?

Very odd...Especially with modern technology, you'd think they'd be able to do something.

"As from December 2004, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all vessels over 299GT to carry an AIS transponder on board, which transmits their position, speed and course, among some other static information, such as vessel’s name, dimensions and voyage details. "

So why would they disable the transponder?

Think about it. If you were boarded by pirates by suprise, and one of them pulled a gun or something, you might not exactly rush to raise the alarm - Would you? Fearing for the Crew's safety as well?

I hope the real live crew of the real boat are found safe and well...

PERHAPS they are having a 'whale' of a time... making the world think they've been hijacked and are about to get the ransom payment AND the sympathy of the world as victims... Or knowing President (PM) Putin perhaps they will get a torpedo...

OR maybe they really are hijacked and have a cargo of uranium... :sleepy: and it is crewed by princess diana, lord lucan, elvis presley and all the other members of the modern conspiracy theories :sleepy: :sleepy: :sleepy:

Very unusual indeed...You'd think it would be passing other ships somewhere...and it's not like they can avoid eachother, or hide, is it?Jack.

Unless it was doing something odd in the Dover Straits, no one is going to pay any attention to 'yet another freighter'.... OR POSSIBLY... It WAS operating a transponder, but of a different ship so that no one said "Weird... There's a ship there with no transponder..". So I'd say right now the Coastguard et al will be going through the AIS logs looking for any ship they can not trace... Not a quick job.

Quote
Geographically, the West of Russia is in Europe but the East is in Asia.
However, Russia is classified as a European nation because:
It was established in Europe (before it expanded into Asia)
Its culture is Eastern European
Its history is closer to Europe's than Asia's (for example, it has had more interactions with other European countries, rather than Asian countries)
Russian people are Caucasian, generally speaking, and NOT "Asiatic", in racial background.
72% of Russia's population live in the European part

Just found this on WikiAnswers, it explains a lot as I've always thought Russia to be in Asia but yet they still appear in European sporting events and even the music event Eurovision.

It would be a good training tool for Vstep- a 'what to do if your ship is hijacked in the Dover Straits'. Preferably stage it on a ferry between Dover and Calais, of course.

I hope the Arctic Sea didn't go down a railway line by mistake... I mean, I know that once we used to have boat trains in this country, but not QUITE like that... BTW on the subject of railways, there is a MSTS model of Dover Marine station, and one for Calais SNCF station; it's a real shame there isn't a ferry simulator to link those two rail simulators together....
