Title: New Project: EVEN SMALLER FERRY
Post by: Mad_Fred on March 24, 2009, 18:21:19
Hey everyone,

This one's just for laughs, really.. I was bored..  did it today in 4 or 5 hours or so..
Obviously the people and car are google standards, and I used stuff from my other vessels for a quick fix.
But it's on target, poly wise.. so theoretically an active project..  :P

(a bit of a loss of quality from resizing..)

This type of car ferry is usually used on inland waterways. I know for a fact that there is a ferry that operates around here somewhere that can only take about 2-4 vehicles.

Nice model though Fred - someone should limit your internet usage for cheating  ;D

Well done though, it looks fantastic :)

We need a smart car with the new forklift tire things that let you drive in any direction (what an easy way to parallel park)

Personally I'm going to be the first New Englander to own one of these

Haha Fred, you should find out if those actually exist. You could really detail that one and have only 50,000 polys! But what about the life raft? ;D Is it the size of the ferry itself when inflated? ;D

They do exist,

Mostly for crossing small rivers in my home country of Poland and the Nile River.

Are any of them civilian?
@ Fred, in the second to last picture, it looks as if that bloke at the stern is getting a little sea sick! (Either that or he just heard some Celine Dino) ;D

Hi you guys!

I appreciate your kind words, thanks very much indeed!

Yep, these small ferries do exsist indeed, they vary a lot in shape and size, and indeed are usually used on small river crossings and such..  in places where a bigger ferry just isn't needed..

The next one,.. well, I reckon that'll just be for one pedestrian.. hehe... it'll just be a lifering on a string, tied to both river banks.. with a bloke on either side to pull people across..  :P

And yep, that bloke on the rear is river-sick..  :)

Cheers guys!!

Fred.

You seem to like ferries, maybe a Washington State Ferry is in order. ;D

Actually, I bet you could make a mean looking Water Taxi. :)

Heh..  I could just paint a mean face onto the VSTP7   ;D

Anyway.. get me some good ferry blueprints, and I'll see what I can do..   :P

But there's a long list of requests allready though.

What do you mean? You will pay for someone else's website? I want one! I want a place to post all my models.

I think he means that he can design and make a website for you and you pay.

Somehow I don't think he'd be offering to pay for websites anyway, especially as we are in the middle of the credit crunch :P

I chuckled, but I really didn't laugh too hard. The only reason for that is the model looks very good, so I didn't really care if it was a small or big ship. It looked good, so I think it's good. Great modeling there Fred :).

Heh.. yeah I reckon so..

Oh well.. one more shot then.. a quick render (lighting is a bit dodgy)

I removed all the google sketchup people, and such..
Title: Re: New Project: EVEN SMALLER FERRY
Post by: llamalord on March 26, 2009, 13:34:58
It looks alot more sterile now.
Title: Re: New Project: EVEN SMALLER FERRY
Post by: Mad_Fred on March 26, 2009, 14:36:37
Uhm.. is that good or bad?  hehe..

My models are all way too clean, I reckon.. but it's just the basic sketchup colors and some simple textures.. If I were to stick them in VS, or - knock on wood - if I manage to make something that is good enough for VSTEP, then I'll pick better, photorealistic ones, for sure... well.. where possible anyway.

@Mad_Fred: So you really modelled all this from scratch or..?
Title: Re: New Project: EVEN SMALLER FERRY
Post by: Mad_Fred on March 26, 2009, 15:42:31
Hi JHB,

Well, there is a fire extinguiser on this one that is the standard object from sketcup..  But for this one, and the bigger ferry, the rest is all mine, indeed. I started getting ridd of other people's work with/after the crabber vessels, but was too lazy to make my own fire extinguisher for this little one.. I also borrowed other parts from the crab boats, but they're my own work. (of course the stuff I removed for that last shot, that was also GSU stuff)

I just slowly went from half-mine to all mine.. not quite there yet, but almost!  ;D

I find that the most amazing thing that you do is the railings Fred. simply splendid.

How many hours are there in a day??
Title: Re: New Project: EVEN SMALLER FERRY
Post by: Mad_Fred on March 26, 2009, 18:43:11
A lot if you're an insomniac on the dole, Mike..  a lot..    :-\

And then I have my warp engine driven unicycle, with which I travel in the direction of the Earth's rotation in the morning, at normal speed... and theb back to my house in the opposite direction of the Earth's rotation in the evening at two times the speed, to arrive back in the morning, and have a whole new day..  ;D

And cheers, Llamalord.. I'm pleased with how my railings come out, usually.. but it's probably one of the simplest things that sketchup does.. It's just a matter of doing things in the right order, that's all..  click here, draw some lines, push this, pull that, click a bit more, select some lines, click once more.. bam.. railings..   ;D

Fred

@Mad:

Yeah I know the methods and how easy copy and past is for one particular 3D model. ;D
Anyway I have to make sure that the object is error free before I clone it several times (that goes for railings for example, windows etc). It's a easy way to get a lot of work done within minutes but it may turn into a nightmare of the cloned object got errors.. :D
Then its maybe "undo, undo undo..and undo" or even worse - a reload of a previously saved file ;D

If there were fewer than 24 hours in a day I have to say, it might kill me! ::)

I learned about that the hard way... Now I am much more carefull.  I do love the grouping and component option in sketchup though. If you make sure the 'donor' object is 100% in order, you can fly through certain steps of the building process. But if you mess up, it can make me want to throw the whole rig out the window..   ;D

@Aad;

Thanks very much, I appreciate that!  I'm hoping I can pull that off too. Time will tell, I'll just keep going at it..

Regards,
Fred

Hello Fred nice job now you should make a ferry larger than vstp 7 but smaller than red jet such as (http://)

One unicycle, actually. But who blabbed?
