Well, Its almost time to say goodbye to the worlds most famous ocean liner, the QE2. On November 26th 2008 she will retire after nearly 40 years of service. It will a sad thought on November 26th to think that the QE2 will never sail again. Instead, she will be a floating hotel in Dubai, but I have just found out however some awful news-The funnel will be ripped out and be replaced by a new glass one-with a penthouse suite inside. How inconsiderate of the Cunard Heritage is that, that funnel should be left alone. I have also found that many of her inside decks will be ripped out to make way for new rooms. I know this is because the QE2 is not suitable for a hotel at the moment, and business is business, but I feel she will lose her character forever, a saddening thought. I have attached a BBC article about the QE2, it may be of interest to watch the video at the bottom. But we must all concede that the QE2 will stop soon. A saddening thought. However, we must look on the bright side, as we must celebrate her 40 years of service. i think its time we say good night, and god bless, The QE2, the most famous ocean liner in the world.
-
It is very very sad, a great icon of British ship building :)
Ad her whistles are unmatched!
I don't think the whole funnel thing will be that bad, if they had sense they would do it to similar design, and it isn't going to be transparent is it? I would of thought they would have red glass that is transparent inside but not out. If it was totally transparent, then when you take a bath everyone can look :P
Captain Ian McNaught said that what they are doing will be good, so if he says it is, then it must be ;)
Farewell QE2!

Here are some QE2 links...

Thanks for that info, what time is it on?
PS, I think a temporary change of avatar is needed from me until November 26th, The last day of the QE2 as a sea going vessel. So I have done as you can see.

Whats a bit of sand under her keel ;D

yes I think its an appreciative thing to do, you gave me the idea, thanks. We should keep these until the QE2 is in Dubai and her career over.

Will do :)

Will do :)
Thats great. I think on November 26th We should get as many people as possible to temporarily change their avatars to the QE2. That would be great.
-
Yes...I watched all of it on the news today, very sad indeed. But, she is an old ship, and I suppose being turned into a hotel In Dubai isn't as bad as being scrapped. Either way, a big loss indeed. :-\
Jack.
-
Fair point Jack, much better than scrapping her. Nice to see you back by the way.

Yes, at least people will still be able to go and see her, people that may have once sailed on her will still be able to go and see her (Even though it will be as a hotel). So I suppose some good has come out of this, in a way.
Thanks! Its great to be back, BT really drove me up the wall with their excuses....I knew the longer I was away from the forum, the longer it would take to settle back in, But, to be honest, I think I've settled in already hehe ;D
Thanks,
Jack.
-
Well the important thing is that your here now. i hope you settle into your new home well, wherever it is. And your right, at least people will be able to still see her.

Scrapping is not a pretty way to go, see attached of CANBERRA

Oh my god! How could i have forgotten that she was retiring this month! :o Its sad to see her go :(, i wish i had the privelege to go on her atleast once :( :( :(
But now that she's retiring, there wont be 4 ships in the Cunard Fleet! why couldnt they wait another 2 years! MS Queen Elizabeth comes in 2010!
I always thought Cunards fleet was small...but the ships sizes make up for that! :D

Thats what is special about cunard I think, Exclusivity, with some of the best and largets passenger ships in the world.
Because Cunard ships truly are, the Most famous Ocean liners, in the world.

Thanks for that SD
-
Well, the last day the QE2 will see her homeland has gone :-\
-
Very true, farewell QE2
-
It made me cringe when i heard they were going to "rip out" her decks..
I think it would of been better to convert her into a Museum, Hotel and Restaraunt in Southampton, keeping as much original as possible. Might have upped the tourism a bit..

I guess most of you can't get German tv, but for anyone who can, tomorrow evening (Sunday) there will be a special about the last voyage to Dubai. It's called "Abschied von Atlantik" (Goodbye to the Atlantic)
18.30-19.00 on ZDF...

Right then, this will be the last evening the QE2 will ever sail in. Tomorrow is the final day of QE2. Farewell to her, one of the greatest ocean liners ever to sail. I think we should all celebrate her life, and we should all have our avatars changed to the QE2 for tommorrow, as a sign of respect. Goodbye QE2, a true ocean liner.
Kind regards, RMSGB
-
Good luck QE2 :)
SA
-
Agreed with Terry, Scrapping is just...bad. But they have to get rid of the ship sometime.

-
Too right, the QE2 is all that matters here.
-
There was a piece on my local news this morning about the QE2. They could not have made is sound any more sad. I think they did a great job with the piece.
-
Does somebody know Port Vila and the South Pacific island Vanuatu? Well, the first is the current homeport of the "QE2", the latter is the flag state...
-
I expect that Vila is quite surprised to get a ship the size of QE2 registered there!
-
That's for sure! Guess they'll never see that ship there.. ::)
