Title: The retirement of the QE2
Post by: RMSGreatBritain on November 10, 2008, 20:50:32
Well, Its almost time to say goodbye to the worlds most famous ocean liner, the QE2. On November 26th 2008 she will retire after nearly 40 years of service. It will a sad thought on November 26th to think that the QE2 will never sail again. Instead, she will be a floating hotel in Dubai, but I have just found out however some awful news-The funnel will be ripped out and be replaced by a new glass one-with a penthouse suite inside. How inconsiderate of the Cunard Heritage is that, that funnel should be left alone. I have also found that many of her inside decks will be ripped out to make way for new rooms. I know this is because the QE2 is not suitable for a hotel at the moment, and business is business, but I feel she will lose her character forever, a saddening thought. I have attached a BBC article about the QE2, it may be of interest to watch the video at the bottom. But we must all concede that the QE2 will stop soon. A saddening thought. However, we must look on the bright side, as we must celebrate her 40 years of service. i think its time we say good night, and god bless, The QE2, the most famous ocean liner in the world.

It is very very sad, a great icon of British ship building :)

Ad her whistles are unmatched!

I don't think the whole funnel thing will be that bad, if they had sense they would do it to similar design, and it isn't going to be transparent is it? I would of thought they would have red glass that is transparent inside but not out. If it was totally transparent, then when you take a bath everyone can look :P

Captain Ian McNaught said that what they are doing will be good, so if he says it is, then it must be ;)

Farewell QE2!

PS, I think a temporary change of avatar is needed from me until November 26th, The last day of the QE2 as a sea going vessel. So I have done as you can see.

Yes...I watched all of it on the news today, very sad indeed. But, she is an old ship, and I suppose being turned into a hotel In Dubai isn't as bad as being scrapped. Either way, a big loss indeed. :-\

Fair point Jack, much better than scrapping her. Nice to see you back by the way.

Yes, at least people will still be able to go and see her, people that may have once sailed on her will still be able to go and see her (Even though it will be as a hotel). So I suppose some good has come out of this, in a way.

Thanks! Its great to be back, BT really drove me up the wall with their excuses....I knew the longer I was away from the forum, the longer it would take to settle back in, But, to be honest, I think I've settled in already hehe ;D

Thanks,
Jack.

Oh my god! How could i have forgotten that she was retiring this month!  :o Its sad to see her go :(, i wish i had the privelege to go on her atleast once  :( :( :(
But now that she's retiring, there wont be 4 ships in the Cunard Fleet! why couldnt they wait another 2 years! MS Queen Elizabeth comes in 2010!
I always thought Cunards fleet was small...but the ships sizes make up for that! :D

I think it would of been better to convert her into a Museum, Hotel and Restaraunt in Southampton, keeping as much original as possible. Might have upped the tourism a bit..

I think we should all celebrate her life, and we should all have our avatars changed to the QE2 for tommorrow, as a sign of respect. Goodbye QE2, a true ocean liner.
