Just have a small question for you, if you let me ask !
"Bluebeard" , in french "Barbe Bleue", was a french nobleman, told for having murdered his different wives. This man was not a sailor at all (his castle is 40 km from where I live), and has been made famous thanks to a fairy tale written by Charles Perrault.
Anyway, I've never heard of a sailor or a pirate named like this ! Black Beard or Red Beard , but no Blue Beard !
So where does your nickname come from ? :-)
Regards,
Denis

Hi Denis.
Take a look here

[edit]OOPS, sorry Cap'n you beat me to the button!
But a different opinion is expressed here:
http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/bluebeard/history.html
There is another pirate often referred to incorrectly as "Bluebeard", Captain Edward Teach (more usually known as Blackbeard). Incorrect details here:
http://www.infonet.st-johns.nf.ca/green/pirate.html
More likely to be correct details (of Blackbeard - edit for clarification) here:

Well, seems like refering to a pirate known as "blue beard" is a confusion !!
from http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/bluebeard/history.html (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/bluebeard/history.html) :
"The average person often mistakes Bluebeard for the infamous Black Beard, a pirate whose story has never been considered part of the fairy tale genre."
Only the first link you gave ( http://www.acemurdermystery.com/content/pirate/bluebeard.html (http://www.acemurdermystery.com/content/pirate/bluebeard.html) ) refers to a rpirate called "Blue Beard", but doesn't give any historic details, it's only a character in a game !
-
oh and, by the way, let me come back to the initial topic of this thread !
My current avatar is the logo of the "SNSM", Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer", which is the french volunteer lifesaving association.
more info (from http://www.snsm.org/ (http://www.snsm.org/), just click on the british flag to have an english version) :
This association has 3 missions :
* lifesaving at sea,
* training of sea lifeguards,
* prevention.
Strong with over 4 500 volunteers dispatched through all the country as well as in our overseas departments, these men and Spambot are divided in two different branches :
* the permanent volunteers who arm 229 sea stations, ready all year long, 24 hours a day to go at sea in 15 minutes when they are called by the Regional Sea Coordination Centers (CROSS),
* the volunteer training teams who arm the 30 Training Centers and form every year around 500 young people. Every year an average of 1 300 SNSM lifeguards out of a pool of 2 000 are commissioned on one third of the French beaches under the responsibility of the Mayors.
The results are eloquent : 55% of all lifesavings at sea (85% on non open hours!) are made by these SNSM volunteers, skippers at sea coming next with 25%. The average figures are 10 000 people assisted a year within 5 000 interventions and 600 men and Spambot saved.
People are volunteers but the ships and their implementation cost big money and in 2006, a budget of 18 M € was needed to accomplish the missions, out of which over 5 M€ were necessary to build new ships. 65% of this money has private origin and 35 % public. A great success : 80% of the money received is used for the social mission.

Hi Denis.
Getting back on topic? You'll be reported to a Moderator for that around here.... ;D
I enjoyed reading about your avatar. So much better than me being Superman in pink tights.
PS in the third link I gave, go right to the end of it to see the incorrect details. That's why I also added the fourth link.

Terry, I think the guy who wrote your third link belongs to "The average person [that] often mistakes Bluebeard for the infamous Black Beard" ! You can read on it : "In this picture can be seen Captain Edward Teach's jolly Roger. Teach is more commonly known as "Bluebeard the Pirate"."
So, I just refered to the Edward Teach page on wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackbeard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackbeard)
Edward Teach (1680[– November 22, 1718), better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate in the Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic during the early 18th century, a period referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy. His best known vessel was the Queen Anne's Revenge, which is believed to have run aground near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina in 1718.
There's nothing here about another nickname like "Blue Beard" !

Thanks Capt.BlueBeard for this last link, this definitely confirm what I was saying !!
Blackbeard was never known as Bluebeard. Bluebeard comes from a story of a man who murdered his wives and kept their corpses locked in a castle room. From my understanding Bluebeard was a wholly fictional character (though I could be wrong, as he doesn't fall into the area of my research).
So, you're the first Captain Bluebeard ever ! Good luck :-)

Hello Denis and TJK,
There is also the history of Conomor, some early predecessor of Henry VIII during the VIth century, not a pirate, but a great and noble king (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conomor)whose attitude vs his wives was slightly less than noble, his only small weakness. But nonetheless a noble man, like all Bluebeards.

Luc

Mine should be instantly recognisable to any Tug fans, it's the latest symbol for Svitzer. I don't have any connection with Svitzer (used to with Adsteam/SMIT), but I use it because it also appears neutral, but has a nautical theme. :)

I work on harbor tugs and I took this picture while made fast to a side chock on a Hapag container ship.

That's one mean beard you've got there ;)
-
No, that's a very generous beard.
A mean beard is one that never goes out and buys flowers or takes you for a meal. (Holding bits of yesterday's breakfast doesn't count).
That's why I shaved mine off recently. 35 years we'd been together. Man and beard. Now it's over. :'(

Hi Terry,
It makes you look younger, (that was what all of my mates said, the ones that noticed that is ;D ), when I shaved mine off.
My avatar is a shot of the bows from the bridge of the 'Pride of Bilbao' in the Bay of Biscay. It was taken by a good mate of mine who was the ship's photographer at the time. Brings back memories :).

I got the same response. Lots of much closer Spambot friends these days...

I'm 22, and can't even grow a real beard. I've been told I'm lucky that I don't have to shave often (once a month), but I'm currently sporting a nice jawful of dark red, bum fluff. :)

Oh yes! Beards have been 'worn' by some of the most noble men in history, so that's a good base for having one. :)
