i think yes

That idea is a misinterpretation of the end of the Mayan calander.

It's like saying that the world will end on December 31st of every year.

Not to mention they link it to the Old Faithful supervolcano, unaware that volcanic activity in the region is currently normal and nothing to be alarmed about.

Even in a very worst case scenario, the effects would be merely across the continent, as in, not the whole world.

Yup. I don't know. I mean, something might happen. But I dont think it will be the end of the world. They thought the world was going to end in 1967. But it didn't despite the huge number of Mothman and UFO sightings. The worst that ever happened was the collapse of the silver bridge. I mean it is possible that some special monument might collapse but there have been so many times the world was supposed to end I just don't think we will end any time soon. They even thought the world would end in 2000 but we are all still here aren't we?

The only reason why people think the world is going to die is that finally on one day Some Mayern people finally realised after months of writing that acually writing the calender for the next 2-3 thousan years was actually pretty dull, boring and sad. and so they stopped and went off and had a curry or something. Which they had every right to do! They then went to the pub, forgot about the calender and had a good time. And because they had stopped writing the local people just assumed they had predicted the world would end then. and so the word spread and thousands of years down the line we are still worried about it just cos of some local peoples misconception over something small.

Thats just my opinion.

If, in the event, a meteor is detected, scientists have roughly a year to figure out how to get rid of it, so I'm told, from somebody that study's the unsiverse ;D

However, parts of it will 'dip' below our atmosphere. I won't image we will just continue life the next day as it was before. Parts of it could hit us with [not catastrophic] events.

The world is just as likely to end 5 minutes after you read this post as it is in 2012.

The only thing that could contribute in 2012 is that our own paranoia may make it a self-fulfilling prophecy for many of us.

Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: TerryRussell on March 03, 2009, 10:05:13
My money is on the world ending. But not until the heliosphere of the sun expands and incinerates the Earth as the sun enters the red giant phase, after most of the hydrogen has been converted to helium and the helium phase begins.

That gives us a few minutes.

My bet is on 3,661,912,000,000,000,427 minutes from..... NOW!

The other way is when the Earth-Moon pair both have their faces locked towards each other (as the moon has, already). But that is due to happen 29.8 minutes after the heliosphere expands, so I don't think that will be your problem.

Or then again, when the nuclear internal heating of the Earth subsides, the movement of the techtonic plates will cease. At that point, as volcanic activity subsides, there will be no more release of water and other materials. Eventually the solar wind will strip away the air and water and life may have a few problems. That will probably occur at about 3,661,911,999,871,312,662 minutes from..... NOW! So, after you ape creatures don your space suits or burrow under the ground for this one, the expanding heliosphere will knocking on your door not long afterwards.

Or there again, Fred (Grim Reaper Mk7) may simply zoom around on his fiendish unicycle, harvesting you all.

Who can tell?

But it is strange. Out of all the lifeforms that I own in the universe, only you Earthlings name your planet after the word for dried mud - Earth.  ??? Daft? Not arf!

Now then, Mad_Fred, Lord Grim Reaper Mk7. Verily, 'tis time to commence the plans to harvest these Mudlings for our food.

I have convinced them that they have 3,661,912,000,000,000,427 minutes remaining. So you go round and start bottling them while they remain so complacent.

It only takes me 0.00001 picoseconds to be packed and gone. Fred is a bit of a laggard. He takes 0.00002 picoseconds. The unicycle slows him a bit. That and his drums.

The reason is that we felt you weren't yet ripened up enough for crushing and turning into mudling sauce.

Sorry, "Earthling" sauce. I keep forgetting you like your planet to be known by the name for dried mud.

In space, they can't hear you scream.

And they can't hear Fred playing his drums, since noise does not carry in a vacuum, of course.

OOPS. The batteries have gone flat in my cloak of humanity. Must get some more next time I go past a newsagent. Assuming I haven't destroyed the Mud in the meanwhile.

I need a challenging occupation. As you may know, Slartybardfast designs Fjords. But I could paint galaxies. Or I could teach Black Holes how to Tango.

Funnily enough a work colleague asked me this very question recently.

He is totally obsessed with the world ending in December 2012, which is not helped by the fact that our 4-yearly 'strip-style' calendars in work does not extend beyond 2012 (we received them in 2008). I told him this was just a coincidence, and jokingly suggested this was done so that the bean counters in the Civil Service would not have to shell out money to buy new 'strip style' calendars for 2012-2016, just in case the prophecy does come true!!!

One thing is for sure: The world WILL end someday and so will he human race.

Indeed!

The Human race might only last for a few million years, if we're remotely lucky, haha.

The planet will only last for at least 4 billion more years... until the sun dies out. The Milkyway Galaxy won't last too much longer in its current form.. it will eventually collide with another nearby galaxy.
And if certain theories are to be believed, the universe itself would die out billions of years from now. So, either way, we are screwed. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts... even though it's still plenty of time... until the other stuff... but 2012 is right around the corner.  :o 8)

I think it is amazing how many theories come back to the end of the world on the same date. If the universe would collapse, what would be there in space? It makes you wonder how the space got here? Or how time itself got here! :o ???

Perhaps the universe would collapse into a supermassive ball a matter, causing another big bang and starting a new universe... there could also be multiple universes.
Our universe is expanding though, and there is no doubt that it started at a central point, if you turn back the clock and retrace the steps.
There are several theories... Once is the big crunch... the universal expansion will slow down, and then it will shrink and collapse in on itself. Then there is the big rip.. the universe will continue to expand, until gravity can no longer hold things together, and all matter is pulled apart.. stars, planets, galaxies, everything. Another is the big freeze... the universe will expand until the heat available in the universe drops below a critical point, causing everything to basically freeze, all matter.
Perhaps it's an ever-continuing cycle.
As for time... maybe there is not actual "time." Maybe time is something we made up so we can keep schedules and keep track of the changing moon, sun, and tides without going insane.  ;D :D

Naaaa, it won't end in 2012, there's no proof of it.

And, I don't believe our Solar System is going any time soon, theories that it will collapse in on itself and all that, in my eyes, is nonsence, there's no proof to say so, we can't tell the future, so there's no way of knowing.

BUT, man will eventually destroy earth, and then we'll all be on another planet somewhere else.

Who's to say that didn't happen before? That people weren't here before us? or some sort of life form(s)?

People are already moving out, in fact, NASA is planning to send out a capsule with a few people in it, into the atmosphere, that way, they'll be able to tell if its possable for us to survive somewhere else in our Solar System.

If we can't survive anywhere else, whats to say different life forms can't either? People say that "Oh we can't survive people we're "such and such" a distance away from our sun", life forms that are adapted to different environments than us?

Thats my belief anyway. I think its all one big cycle.

Jack.

The world could end in 2012, but the Milky Way is gonna end in the distant future. The Milky Way's closest neighbor galaxy Andromada will collide with our galaxy and be obliterated.

Our galaxy won't be obliterated... but it will be drastically changed and mixed up... Milkyway and Andromeda will basically swirl into a single galaxy. A lot of star systems will be thrown off, possibly destroyed, or collide, and many others will probably be thrown off into space.. others will be pushed toward the super massive black hole at the galaxy center... but eventually, the two galaxies will settle down into a single one, making a new galaxy. But it would be a slow process, to us at least, if we're still around. We probably wouldn't even notice it happening, for the most part. It's just all on such a huge scale.

You are absolutely spot-on on one thing - mankind is destroying this planet as we are using up natural resources too quickly and polluting the planet in the process....

In the news Prince Charles gave a warning today that we have 100 months left before the Earth suffer "irreversible damage" as a result of climate change unless mankind start to change their ways now.....next thing HE gets on an aircraft for a 10 day tour of South America!!!!!

Talking about the pot calling the kettle black  ::)

I doubt man will ever have the power to destroy the earth, we can disrupt the climate so that it will become difficult for life to thrive/survive but once we are gone I'm sure the earth will fix itself again. We are using up it's natural resources, but they aren't leaving the earth (except of course the stuff in space) so as long as we don't destroy every single photosynthesising thing on the planet it will all go back into the earth.
Title: Re: End of the world

I wouldn't say fix itself, but other life forms may be able to inhabit it, after we're gone, for some million years.

If you look at what the planet has gone through since it was formed, then mankind's inpact on the planet is really just a joke.

We will not destroy the planet. But eventually we wil destroy ourselves though. And in the proces, a lot of other species.

But the Earth will not care much, she'll be spinning on and on.. untill hit by something big enough to be destroyed, or when the sun goes supernova, etc...

The planet will be fine for ages and ages to come.. we'll just not be there with it to enjoy it.  ;D

Here's an idea for a film: A very large asteroid (moon size) passes Earth by 10.000 km..
The gravitational effect is like a whip on a spinning toll..Result: the Earth's rotation increases ..
A full day is now 15 hours..Howling winds of more than 300 kph constantly roar all over the planet, the oceans rise several metres ..
Air traffic is impossible, as is sea-travel and driving on the roads..
Would be a great movie.. :)

I just checked. "Whose backside is the reddest?" is played by your brothers, the chimpanzees. They are very difficult to distinguish from you humming beans, as you share 99.97% of your DNA with them.

The only way that we can tell you apart is that they have funnier comedy shows and they play a much better game of chess.

By the way, they already have plans for what happens when the world comes to end. We asked if they would share the plans with you lot, but they said no, as you didn't have sufficient bananas to pay the fare.

PS You Humming Beans are a type of Great Ape, along with Bonobos (even closer relatives of yours), Chimpanzees and Grillers. (They make good toast, hence the name).

DNA is not a way for identification, unless in the case of identical twins. To distinguish Monkeys, Apes, Chimps, etc. from humans is an impossible argument. Just look for clothes, body covering hair, or the innability to speak a language ;D. I hope that helped your identification skills ;D.

I have plans too! When the world ends, I plan on dying ;D.

My dad is always buying bannanas, so there is no sortage in my house ;D.

We are closestly related to the Chimps, and related to practically every monkey shares at least .001% of DNA with us.
Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: TerryRussell on March 25, 2009, 22:58:25
DNA is the perfect way to ID individuals and the species of which they are a member. With a single cell from you, I could tell if you were a member of the highly intelligent ape family (Bonobo, Gorilla, Chimp, etc) or a mere slug or liver-fluke.

You share over 86% of your DNA with even the most distant of your slug cousins. Even bacteria share a huge amount of DNA with you. (Not with Firestar, though. He is of course not of your planet).

Now, although you have some bananas, the Chimps require 18.6718992 Trillion class "A" Fyfe Bananas per appendage that you possess. They don't give change!

Still, that asteroid is now 1.8 million miles closer to you than it was when we started this conversation. Fortunately you won't be worried about that as the ice-age will hit you about 1 million years beforehand.

But you won't care about the ice, either, as the sea levels will rise by 300 feet soon, when the Antartic ice sheet slips into the sea. (If I have the right diary, that's sometime within the next ten years).

Your oil will run out about the same time, but that will be the least of your problems.

This cheery greeting was brought to you by the Inter-Galactic Greetings Card Company.
Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: The Captain on March 25, 2009, 23:17:29
Yup. But, that isn't exactly the main concern of DNA ::) ;D.

I was right at least ;D. I didn't want to make up a number that could have been incorrect. But I think that Firestar should share some of our DNA, right ;D?

How do you know if it is class A ??? ;D?

The ice age? Isn't our planet getting warmer ????

Of course it will. That is why we have other sources to fuel cars. They just havn't been released because they cost a lot to manufacture. Now, what would be really impressive is if they could use sea water to fuel cars, not just purifyed water.

Bad greeting. I am sending them a complaint ;D.

To liberate this topic back to when it was first started, I think that if the world were to end in our life time, I would just enjoy the time I have :). I wouldn't be running around in circles complaining about the world ending, but I would probably be out doing some of the things I enjoy. And, if I were to know when the world would end, I would probably do some things that are illegal ::) ;D .

Oh the technology is already there, and could have been made available a long time ago. The powerful companies just want to keep on milking the cow and making massive profits. Once the oil has run out, they'll move on to grab something else as a source of new fuel - probably H20 or wind power.

I think we could see a situation where tables are turned as the oil depleted Middle East will suddenly find themselves dependant on our H20 for fuel, like the Western world did with their oil for decades.

p.s. I hope we never find a way to use sea water to fuel cars, otherwise we'd run out of sea water in no time and we'll end up like that poor barren red planet known as Mars!
Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: The Captain on March 25, 2009, 23:47:15
Well yes, the tech. is there, they just don't want to release it for a number of reasons. Most has to do with profits and money regulation.

They could make solar power in a desperate attempt I suppose. But the countrys there arn't as dependant on oil as we are. They don't use as many cars as we do, but with the new car that came out in Europe selling for $2,000 each, a lot of customers will buy the car, but with more pollution.

The water will be evaporated and will come on down to Earth in the end. All water is returned to the Earth, no matter what. Even the water you drank 3 months ago is either on the ground or in the air.

Talking about new ways to power transport, I was watching Top Gear a few weeks ago, and it shows a normal family saloon, but in fact, it was actually running on Hydrogen.

It only has an electric motor, which has only one working part, it also dosen't make any noise, which is quite confusing when you come to put your key in the ignition ;D

Here's a picture, it's called the Honda FCX Clarity: (http://carmaker.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/2008-honda-fcx-clarity.jpg)

To put it in posh terms, its a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle; it dosen't give off any Emissions-Apart from water vapour.

Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: TerryRussell on March 26, 2009, 09:15:57
But to make the car it caused an immense amount of pollution and global warming. When the car is scrapped, it will cause even more.

In order to produce the hydrogen fuel, the amount of CO2 produced is more than will be saved by just burning the equivalent amount of petrol (gas).

You'll pay more for the car and for the fuel, believing you're "saving the planet". Sounds like they've got you where they want you(r wallet)...
Title: Re: End of the world
Post by: JHB on March 26, 2009, 11:42:52
That car wont be operative in Norway within 5 years. Our government is so slow that even making fuel stations for that type of car will take years to establish...
Nothing will happen if we trust our government all the time and leave the biggest issues to them. In fact we can do a lot as civilians if we just come together.
The end of the world will probably not come, but wild weather, financial crisis and lots of poverty will damage our society more than ever before. And if there are any threats outside in the space we will not know about it until the day the US president goes online on world wide broadcast telling the world the truth that is probably hidden by NSA, CIA, FBI, NASA and other government organizations for several years.

The biggest threat to our planet is in fact ourself, the way we live, because we do not live in harmony with the nature, we are using it to feed our slavery to money.
So if there is a question about if the humanity need to face a global disaster -yes, we deserves it. If not the end of the world then the time for the humanity to "wake up" and start doing something with our system and change it into a system where everyone is included and where poverty is a unknown subject and where we live in harmony with the nature.

But you know...the human is so stupid today that the day it faces it's own stupidity its too late.
If 2012 will happen I guess its a action by God a action to re-establish the planet Earth.

we only have one earth. Will give you am example look what is happening to the bees

of flowers means no food !.

are linked and if one goes it's a chain reaction. So it's our civilization that's totally wrong given money is
everything should not be when people are staving to death.

Actually the question about believing in something is irrelevant because believing wont help us to get access to the truth. It would be like going to the NSA office and say hey I believe in US government secrets, can you let me inside now? or I believe in UFOs can you guys give me access to the Area 51 top secrets? because belief will not prove anything and it will not help you 1% more to understand something that is classified information.

How can you believe in something that you have never seen? And if you have seen it will you still believe or not believe? Its not a question about believing but rather getting sources. And when the sources are locked out and is not public accessible then nobody can prove it even if there are one or more sources that seriously state that I was at the Area 51 hangar and did see what they had there then there is still not a question about believing but rather confirming the sources, that someone can confirm the source and that the source is telling the truth. And who can confirm that? Well that will be confirmed the day the information is no longer classified or that something happens that gives us a confirmation.
There are even people that thinks that the global melt down of the poles is conspiracy and that the 9/11 was a inside job performed by the US government. That is all we got, conspiracies and nothing more. The source that many of rely on is the government and the media (and of course our trusted scientists that works for the government) , but who do you think controls the government and the media? Nobody..not one single one, because there is no more powerful sources on this earth that can confirm or dis confirm the truth. So it all means also that these sources that we rely so much on can manipulate their info, the truth that we all hunt for and want to find out.

I don't believe in 2012, but in the same time I believe in 2012 because my voice don't have a value. Why vote for something that we cannot confirm? 2012 confirms itself at 21st December 2012, the confirmation may be a hell of a sight or just a normal day like any day (time will tell..).
In the same time we could make a vote like do you believe in death? and everyone would voted yes because we all know that we going to die someday. In year 3050 everyone would voted no because at that year the humanity have made a miraculous medicine that makes the human live forever.

Things we don't know will stay unknown until the day it happens ourselves. And if this happens only you then you will have a huge problem to explain it or even tell someone about it if you where taken to the rear side of the Moon by some aliens where they did examine you to find out some more about the human anatomy. Likely everyone will laugh about it and your story because they where not there, they where not your eyes and they could not see it and confirm what did happen to you...

IF we one day wake up one morning and see some huge flying alien ships (like in the ID4 movie) I can assure you that the government would have one *** of a day to cover it from us. Likely they would go on air and say that the Russian did bomb the US with a biological weapon which made us all hallucinate...and the media would give us the same news.

Remember that once back in the history the humans believed that the Earth was flat...
They believed it until someone confirmed that it was round...can you imagine that?

I think that the guy who proved it was hunting for the sources rather than stick to the question about believing.
But that was back then, today in our world where we are bombarded with information and it can be really difficult to prove something to be true or false. So we thrust the sources that we always have trusted, the government, the media, the scientists and the books with printed history, but that doesn't mean that we are exposed to the truth..because we don't know all about all kinds of stuff around us. We only know what we know now...today!
But like I said, not all facts are public, many of them are classified material.

Therefore conspiracy and ufos and all this unexplainable stuff will exist for a loooong time..even after my death. It's naturally because we cannot explain everything in space where 1 light year is 9.4605284 × 10^15 kilometers (or to be more precise exactly 9,460,730,472,580.8 km).
Our Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years across, do you think that the US Government got technology to monitor such a huge space down to 1 millimetres.
Just the Milky Way galaxy contains 200 to 400 billion stars...imagine that? :P

I would rather hunt after sources that confirms what is going on instead of asking myself or others IF you belive..because that designs a group A and a group B that will fight each other trying to prove who is telling the truth and who is not (typical for discussion boards like this one). :P

I don't believe Area 51 is hidding proof of aliens.  It's more likely the US Government is using Area 51 to make top secret weapons.

Well one new thing that I read in the news today was that there is a big solar storm coming to Europe.
NASA have made a warning and funny enough they posted this example:

IT IS midnight on 22 September 2012 and the skies above Manhattan are filled with a flickering curtain of colourful light. Few New Yorkers have seen the aurora this far south but their fascination is short-lived. Within a few seconds, electric bulbs dim and flicker, then become unusually bright for a fleeting moment. Then all the lights in the state go out. Within 90 seconds, the entire eastern half of the US is without power.

A year later and millions of Americans are dead and the nation's infrastructure lies in tatters. The World Bank declares America a developing nation. Europe, Scandinavia, China and Japan are also struggling to recover from the same fateful event - a violent storm, 150 million kilometres away on the surface of the sun.

That's posted at New Scientist.com  (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20127001.300-space-storm-alert-90-seconds-from-catastrophe.html?full=true&print=true)

Yes that's true, technology that they did get from nowhere. :D

But of course none of us can know what is going on there at Area 51. I just find it funny that John Lear which is not "someone" can tell these stories.

Quote
John Lear is highly regarded in aviation circles. Now retired from flying, he amassed over 19,000 hours of flight time, and has flown in over 100 different types of airplanes in 60 different countries around the world. He flew both commercially and in missions worldwide for the CIA. John Lear holds the most FAA Airman certificates ever earned by any single airman [3] [4], and he has held numerous world records [5].

In 1966 John Lear was co-pilot of a Lear Jet Model 24 (N427LJ) that completed the first round-the-world flight by a business jet. Beginning and ending at Wichita, Kansas, Lear together with two Lear factory pilots Hank Beaird and Rick King set 17 world records between May 23-26, including speed around the world [6] [7]. The official NAA observer was John Zimmerman [8].

That's a bit off-topic from me so I end it here ;)

People believing the earth is flat is a fairly recent phenomenon, I think even in Aristotlean era they knew the earth was round (shadow on moon). But now some people think it is flat based mainly on the reason that... Not much really. So people believing the earth will end soon falls vaguely into the same category of people just going against common belief of the times.

Oh and that thing that New Scientist wrote is just showing how easy it would be to pretty much kill off the western world, due to us relying on ever higher-voltage power lines that would basically act like magnets to giant plasma balls that could fly off the sun when it's next period of high activity occurs (2012 ish). No one wants to prepare for it though bwcuase that is the sort of way we live nowadays

Really all we can do is wait and see. If nothing happens, great. But if something happens... Not great ;D.

There also different beliefs about how the world is going to end, so that makes me believe this is all a guess.

Robert Frost presented the two principle alternatives. Fire is inevitable, if the ice don’t git us first.
Historically, life has survived many ice ages, and will probably survive the next—thanks to our ability to produce global warming.

It is also a colossal conceit to equate the extinction of Homo sapiens with the end of the world.
