Title: I'm back from New York City (the Big Apple)
Post by: RMS Canada on February 13, 2009, 18:02:42
Guess what?

I am going to be on a school trip to New York City in May this year!!  ;D  This is real exciting for me since I have never been in the States before nor have left Canada's border.  We'll be leaving on May 6 and be back on May 10, 2009.  I've always wanted to go to New York because of it's connection with the ocean liners.  I really want to vist Pier 54. on the Hudson River where Lusitania departed for the final time and the White Star pier where Carpathia dropped off Titanic's passengers on April 17, 1912.

EDIT: I'm back from my trip; it was really great!!!  ;D

I'm in Boston shortly. (Probably end of April). Have to go to Australia first, though. And then into Ontario.

May go to New York with my wife shortly, since she's from just across the river in NJ. It may only be for a weekend.

New York DC?

Even I know there isn't such a place.

Washington DC is so called to distinguish it from Washington, the state. DC stands for the district of Columbia.

District:  A partial of land laid out as a 10 mile square extending across the Potomac river and occupying land ceded in 1791 by Virginia and Maryland.

So, New York can't be "D.C.", since it's in the state of New York.

If you can go to pier 54, Pier 60 is a short ways away further north.

Last where I checked on Google Earth, Pier 54. is not that far from the USS Interpid which is one of the places we'll be going to.  Maybe by luck, we'll stop and sightsee Pier 54.

Some tips, from someone who spends a lot of his time roaming the globe:

1) only carry what you need. Enough to stop a mugger being really upset that you don't have enough, but not so much that you have nothing left if you do get robbed.

2) You're much more likely to loose your money than be robbed. Be careful.

3) Use zip-up pockets and keep your valuables in an inside pocket, out of sight.

4) Split your cards and money into different pockets. That way if you get pickpocketed or mugged or loose something, you have half of your valuable left, most likely.

5) Don't carry things that identify you or your hotel. If you loose them, the finder/thief will get there before you do!

I think those tips apply when visiting anywhere. I try to follow them when I go out from home, never mind to another country.  ;)

But being sensible means that despite having travelled to just about every country in the world, I have never been mugged, held up, robbed, had my pockets picked nor lost very much.

And I've been to some fairly rough places. Portsmouth, Selsey,....

yea the city (as we call it here in my area) can be a rough place, as terry said just play it smart, keep your big valuables at home is best, dont even bring them, but if you do always keep them in sight and like terry said spread your things out, one of my friends got pick pocketed today in school, the kids stole his iPod and when someone steals it, you'll never see it again, so just a heads up  ;)

Thanks for the tips, Terry.  I may get a money belt, but I am still discussing this with my father.  Number four as you said is the same tip suggested by the teacher who planned this trip, Ms. Buckingham, when I went to the NYC meeting on Monday at my high school.

All this is good stuff to remember even if you go the road at home. Minimise your potential for losses.

But, as I said, your chances of being robbed, pick pocketed, etc are pretty small. The chance of loosing it yourself are much greater!

The trip costs $800 US (transportation, citypass, food for the last night in Manhattan, the hotel, etc.)  I've currently saved up 75.00 dollars Canadian and plan to get it transferred into American dollars when the date of the trip is near.  I'll need money to purchase my own meals except for the last night in NYC and for gifts.

agian that is a good price but we really cant complain here because again for only 2400 we get a roundtrip ticket from lax to well im not sure yet then like the bus tickets and such and like tours and tickets into attractions. oh we also go to the hershey factory, white house, capitol hill, and all of the nations monuments like the lincoln, washington, etc.

1. Avoid Certain Parts at night I Dont know where you are going but Bronx and others.
2. Dont be frightened I used to be scared in the city and all of that but really it is the same just allot more people ant Intimidating buildings
3. AVOID ALLYWAYS AT NIGHT NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!
4. Enjoy Yourself also when I am there in lower manhattan stand next to a building look straight up, I makes you feel soooooo small It gives you a weeird feeling kinda  lets you know what ants feel like lol

I've never met a rude New Yorker. Sure, there are plenty in a hurry, but there are also a huge number who are happy to chat, I've found.

No significant difference between New York and London, in my experience.

Or perhaps that means that Londoners are as rude as New Yorkers, when viewed through the eyes of a San Fran Ciscan. (London and New York economies are closely bound together, they have a lot of similarities, so maybe that's the reality?).

Come on Kean dont scare him  ;)

The city aint that bad BTW The shootings you hear about are in the bad areas where you're going to be(lower manhattan) is a great area hence very safe and the U.S. isnt like canada I used to live in ottawa the People here GENERALLY arent as friendly in the city (I notice)

Please dont be a hater and Quote me saying that I said New Yorkers are rude thats not what I meant they are just in a rush
hehe not trying too, you've more than likely been to the city a heck of a lot more than me as i'm about an hour to 1.5 hours northwest of the city but its most certainly a fun place to go lots of attractions like lady liberty for example

I live 15mins away from NYC It is more or less made out to be a bad place which it is like most places depending on the area tips to go along with terrys:

Hi everyone,

As you know, I'm leaving tomorrow for NYC.  We'll be leaving tomorrow morning at 6:00am and won't be there until 6:00pm.  After we check in at the hotel, we are going straight to the Empire State Building.  I don't think I'll get a chance to use a computer at the hotel with internet but if I get a chance, I'll let you know on how it's going.

Hotel we're staying at: http://www.wellingtonhotel.com/default.aspx?pg=home&rp=home

EDIT: I've changed my flag from Canada to USA early since I won't be able to while on my trip.  I'm still in Canada at the moment, I don't know the time we'll be in the United States when we cross the border tomorrow.

We were on our way to the USS Interpid when it started to downpour.  Sadly, I have to wait till Saturday to go to it, and Saturday is the last day I'll be in the Big Apple.  I went up the Empire State Building yesterday evening; at the top I saw clouds!!  Bad news is, it started to rain.

I have to go now.

I tried to, but we couldn't since I spent most of the Saturday afternoon in the American Museum of Natural History and the USS Interpid Air & Space Museum.

I looked at a map of New York, but I didn't see the marina where you were.  I couldn't even go to Pier 54. in the Celsea Piers.  :(  I was wanting to find you after visiting the USS Interpid, but then, something bad happened...

EDIT: I just did a Google Map search of the marina you were in and it turn's out that is on the way to Pier 54.  Were you any chance at the marina on Thursday morning?

Good for you to be back! And did you visit Ground Zero for the memory of 9/11?

I got to see Ground Zero from within a nearby building since there are wooden walls around the site that blocked the view.

It's because they are all the same colour and often I can't tell which ones are $1, 5, or 20.  With Canadian money, they are in different colours plus we have toonies and loonies.

My wife (an American) reckons that British notes are good, because unlike US money, the more a note is worth the larger it is. So it is very easy to tell a fiver from a tenner or a twenty or fifty, etc.

Similar things with the various types of coin. 1p is smaller than 2p (both are bronze). A one pound is smaller than a two pound coin.

Other than "I'm in Toronto and Ontario tomorrow", nothing to add!

If you by any chance drive through the District of Muskoka, go to the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst (where I live) and see the RMS Segwun and Wenonah II.  Both haven't started their cruises on the lakes yet, but they will soon.

It's always a bit of a mad dash.

Tomorrow, I have to complete a day's auditing, then jump in a taxi and get to Toronto to catch my plane home. Back in the UK 0655 on Wednesday morning.

Here was an exciting one for me, we passed by Pier 54. on our way to Battery Park.  The date for this picture was May 7, 2009, the day Lusitania sank after being torpedoed off the coast of Ireland.
