Big news, Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship, Norwegian Epic, was put in the water for the first time on July 11th, 2009. Now I know I'm going to get a bunch of comments that say things like "That ship is SO ugly!" and "Just another ugly ship in a long line of ugly ships." But I think Epic and all NCL ships, are very good looking. I think why everyone thinks they are so ugly is they just aren't very traditonal looking. They are more retro and perhaps people don't really like this style. I also like the Freestyle concept NCL follows. I've cruised on NCL, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean and NCl is by far my favourite. I plan to take my next cruise with them. Here are some pictures of the new ship. You've heard my opinon on Epic and now I'd love to here yours. Perhaps instead of just saying if you think the ship is ugly or not maybe say why you think they are ugly or not. This might make for a more intresting discussion.
-
cool and that 2nd pic down made me want to go onto that boat
-
You got the bit about comments saying it's ugly right. One of the ugliest cruise ships ever that. (In my opinion)
I personally think the reason it is so ugly is because of all that rubbish they've put above the bridge, the funnels and the stern.
Otherwise I think it could be a pretty well balanced good looking ship! :)
-
despite its ulginess, it does look like a huge centre of fun and great holidaying. Yay! ;D
-
We are all familiar with modular construction, yes?
Well... This is modular design. The hull and lower structure was designed by Norwegian-Boat-Designers-Ltd. he upper structure was designed by class 4, A small school, Oslo.
It reminds me a little of that badly rebuilt Al Salam ferry... Still people go on cruise ships for where they go and their facilities, not whether the ships look good.
-
I also like the Freestyle concept NCL follows.
If you'll compare it to the "Freestyle concept" by wich Captain Titanic/Gloat were making his models - you'll agree that even his ships were better than that.
-
In fairness though, I suspect there was a little bit more technical design went into developing this ship than anything freestyle on sketchup...
-
wow I saw this pic on another topic and I thought it was edited and of coarse meant as an joke. It is one of the most ugly things I've ever seen as far as ships go, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't be a nice ship to travel with.
-

So true.
-
Wow, Such an ugly ship but im pretty sure that people with still sail on it.
-
WOW what an ugly ship what is up with those deck ontop of the bridge (is it trying to copy the norway)
-
Really dont like this ship!
-
I wish Gloat was here... That's a perfect ship for him to model to win the "uglier than ugliness" contest! ;D

Haha!
-
Yep... If only we can remember his version of QM2...
...or QV...
...but I think you got my point. ;D
-
Last one is QV ;)
-
It wouldn't look so bad without the bridge stuff...
If you cover the top bit it just looks like a normal modern cruise ship...
-
Yeah, but like has been said before, when this ship is finished and people sail on her, they won't think "Wow this ship is ugly" They'll be thinking "Time to hit up the buffet and then... no way, they have three waterslides and a hot tub? No way!!!" ;D
Oh and here's a link to NCL's website about Epic. It has more pictures and info on the features of the ship. Looks cool, I'd like to cruise on her when she's complete.
http://ncl.worldmedia.net/
And a link to her deck plans:
http://ncl.worldmedia.net/the-ship/deck-plans/
Click the slider on the bottum when you see the 3D graphic. You can rotate the modle 360 degrees!
-
would be a great ship to go on. at least you wouldnt have to look at her from the outside then!
aslong as shes lovely inside is the main thing. the wave cabins look cool aswell.
-
It looks like it could easily be capsized by a large wave or strong winds.
-
http://cruiselinehistory.com/?p=1564
From that article: I bet the supermarket could capsize if all oversized passengers of the "Motel 6" will go to it's top floor. ;D
-
the Norwegian ships are nice, i've been on the dawn and the service is great. This ship i'm not so keen on its looks, kinda wierd with such a high extension above the bridge. But you can't judge a book by its cover :D
-
YeaH I sailed on the Norwegian Sun, (As I've probably said many many times. :)) But yeah, the service was great and the cabins were very roomy for the price I paid. We flew in the night before the ship sailed and NCL put us up in a beuatiful 5 star hotel (Since we had booked our flight through them). The cabins on the ship were just as nice (if not nicer) Than the ones at the hotel. 7 days in the caribbean later my only complaint is that the band that played on the pool deck only knew about 3 songs!
-
Oh, nooo! Here she comes! Run for you lives!!! :o

I remember going on an old Dover Calais ferry; I think it was the Invicta. Quite an ugly ship from the outside, but looked modern and smart from the inside (at least it was THEN!).
So, as you say don't judge a ship by its lines :D

Hmm She looks nice to my mind...
Or you meant THIS? :o

Color Viking are much more pretty than Norwegian Epic. I cant say how many times i have been on that ship. :)
-
Or you meant THIS? :o
http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=819582
every ship needs a bay window under the bridge! :P
-
Hmm She looks nice to my mind...
The exhaust stack looks totally out of scale and the bridge looks like it was put on after the ship sailed and the Capt. couldn't find anywhere to work. Invicta was slow and had poor lane-metres.
That said, she rode rough weather well and was very well equipped for passengers and smart too... Was my favourite to travel on, but still ugly (I must go over to Scandinavia and take a trip... )
-
She could be even more uglified by Gloat!
-
I think that more people would like the Epic if this topic wasn't swaying their opinions.
-

Who?
I think that more people would like the Epic if this topic wasn't swaying their opinions.
I think the average cruise passenger probably doesn't come to this website, so I'd worry little.
-
Who?
The Color Viking (ex - Stena Invicta), if you are talking about that ship.
-

Who or what is gloat, I mean. Sorry

hehe, the band on our ship was literally everywhere, on the pool deck during the day and during the evening into the night they were in the grand atrium, they played some songs more than once but they knew alot. I had a balcony room, much better than my inside room on my last cruise ::)
-

Dun dun Chhhh! with the pun! ;D

LOL  Wat a pretty ship Norwegian Epic are
well that most bee the strange and ugliest ship i have seen for a long time
this is a shame of the Norway name
that's must been a mail ship, that's no lady
-
It almost looks as bad as the Ben My Chree, haha.
-
Haha you've landed yourself in it there. :P
-

Not my fault James likes a ship that looks like a big lego block sitting on a floating hull.
-
Not my fault James likes a ship that looks like a big lego block sitting on a floating hull.
Hahaha
Sorry James, I couldn't help but laugh at that  :D
But...Then again, POH/POR looks like a block of flats on a hull  :D (In Nathan's, kind words)
-
And Stena Leader looks like a rusty old bucket which was dug of the seabed, in Jacks, excellent words. :)
-
Oh yeah, Of course I said that Nathan ::) Stena Leader is one of the best looking ferries, and best kept ferries in the UK, for her age, in my opinion ;D
-
I'm not getting into another ferry war here, we have this enough on MSN ::)
BUT PRIDE OF ROTTERDAM IS BETTER THAN STENA LEADER
-
Lets take this into the.....Cookie topic.... >:(
-
Well the Ben My Chree wasn't built for it's beauty... ::)
It was built in the 1998 to undertake a reliable service for the Isle of Man, and it's suceeded that goal. Without the Ben My Chree the Isle of Man wouldn't be what it is, the Ben brings in alot of produce for the Manx people, including their valuable newspapers in the morning!!

And they can't do that in style?

I like the Ben-my-Chree ::)
-
Ugliest Ferry Ever.
-
Uglier than the old Pride of Sandwich? (Yes that was a real ferry name)
-
IDK never seen it.
Probably the ugliest SHIP would be one of those car haulers..
-
At least Ben My Chree doesn't boast about the cars it has / holds. Unlike some around here... ::) :)

:o :o :o
My EYES!!!!
IT BURNS!!!!
-
i think te only thing that spoils it is the big city block type thing above the bridge, otherwise it would be fine and wouldnt look so "bow heavy".
-
What's that- MV ugliness? Did I stumble into the ugly shops topic by mistake?
-
Those look like photos from sea trials, hopefully they will at least sort out the paint job before delivery/
Not much more they can do to make her any less ugly I guess.
-
People will probably kill eachother to get a cabin at the top of ...eh... that block
-
People will probably kill eachother to get a cabin at the top of ...eh... that block
or not too get it, my experience tells me that you want a cabin 3 or 2 decks below the bridge, if you don't like waves that is...
-
I want to call this ship: The Frankenstein of all ships!
-
MS Joybox :P
-
The 'Norwegian' bit should be painted out and 'FAILURE' added below the 'EPIC'
i.e. EPIC FAILURE
-
i ship that i think is ugly is Mega express 5 after her rebuild.
-
Do you mean one of these...
Those are two sexy ships :D
Still the EPIC is real EPIC Failure
-
Well I haven't been on the forum in awhile and I can't believe that this disscusion is still kicking. But anyways my opinon hasn't changed on what I call the EPIC win :2thumbs: and I'm as excited as heck that she is in the water and moving under her own power!
-
Eeeeew....thats terrible :C if it wasnt for the thing on top of the bridge it wouldnt be so bad...but eeew :P

Damn boy racers, think they own the road!
-
Oh shit..does it have a lighthouse on board...(hint, the red/orange ball)??
What a design... ::) One day they will regret and rebuild the top... :P
-
Not a lighthouse, It's a strobe light. It blinds eceryone who looks at the ship before they see the ugliness
Redesign the top? But it has such a nice bar/restaraunt!
-
Oh shit..does it have a lighthouse on board...(hint, the red/orange ball)??
It's a port/starboard reminder for captain. ;)
-
It's red on both sides. Now that really would be an epic fail.
-
Oh, nooo! Here she comes! Run for you lives!!! :o
(http://media.shipspotting.com/uploads/thumbs/rw/941481_800/Ship+Photo+Norwegian+Epic.JPG)
Red - port, green - starboard. It's easy, captain. ;D
-
C'mon..think of it as a cattle carrier..(which is what tourists are)..
I doubt the green/red balls are a reminder for the captain.. :)
-
I doubt the green/red balls are a reminder for the captain.. :)
You mean it's for passengers? ;D
-
Maybe so...I think the red/green balls are meant to confuse the cows..
Puzzled cows give more milk.. :)
-
Maybe the nav lights have to be that big to overcome the glowing ugliness.
EDIT: Isn't the 'C' in 'EPIC' missing in that pic?
-
Yes, yes it is.
And those green and red bulbs are most likely to be painted white...
-
I think that the Norwegian Epic is a very dangerous ship which can easily capsize in rough weather, during making a sharp turn, or in case of a collision. She is too tall, thus she has a very high center point of gravity and a very low metacentric height. She is very unstable and not seaworthy. There are much more cruiseships which are too tall.
-
I'm pretty sure she'll be all ballasted out, and there will be stabilisers too.
-

What makes you the expert in ship design and judging whether or not vessels are seaworthy?
And lol if you look at her name and how the 'C' is missing, the Epic is an Epic Fail...

But you know that since the middle of 17th century the shipbuilding evolved into something more than just art. ;)
-
...it evolved into Olympic Spirit ::)
-
I meant they finally started to carry out calculations before building a ship.
-
All the superstructure above the bridge IS the ballast.. ;D
Simply made my night.
-
They just move the passengers around that area depending on her draft. ;D
..or on her list. ;D
-
..or on her list. ;D
I was on the Canberra during her last departure from Sydney, as lots of people had emigrated to Australia on the ship it's last ever departure was a big event with thousands lining the Quay, all the passengers and all of the off duty crew were on the starboard side for departure and gave the ship such a list (about 2 degrees) that we had to transfer ballast from starboard to port.
As we backed off the berth the cruise director came over the PA system and said "And if you look on the port side you will see the beautiful Sydney Opera House" 1,600 people went from the starboard side to the port side, and combined with the ballast which had already been transferred gave the ship about a 5 degree list to port.
The old man had to ask the passengers to move back to the starboard side.
-
Now that made my morning! ;D
-
That's brilliant.
EDIT:
And lol if you look at her name and how the 'C' is missing, the Epic is an Epic Fail...
Way ahead of you.
I just remembered what this ship looks like.

Not a good start...

How EPIC.

Thats one pun i actually laughed at
-
I got a new name for the ship EPIC Fail
-
im sorry but thats been said many times before
-
i had to do it though :P
-
When the Norwegian Epic left Rotterdam (at last) she had the courtesy to sail downstream stern first. So all those ship spotters weren't abused anymore with her more then ugly backside (see pic. 1)
Although her bow is quite attractive, but who designed that ugly attachment on top of her bridge? (Pic 2)
-
Perhaps Jeremy Clarkson?
-
Oh dear oh dear not jeremy clarkson.
The owners idea
-
Maybe they were going for a smaller idea of that area, but though to add an addition to increase passenger space. They kinda did it on the wrong axis. They should have added to length, not height.
