And asking her "Do you like ferries" is NOT a good line, TFM!

Other BAD examples
"Oohhhh I like your blue eyes... just like the blue hulls of a LD ferry"
"Want to come back to my house and see my ferry photo collection"
"I hope you are enjoying the beachside ship spotting evening. MUCH better than being in some nice, warm pub"
"Don't you find the topic of Wartsilla diesels Vs MAN diesels REALLY thrilling too?"

The best sarcasm I've ever heard from you!  ;D

Basically just a list of all the vessels in SS08/NH/Shipyard

We know each one will have an addon, so just cross them off as they come

And add on the new vessels

TFM, you are studying physics, yes?

Can you explain to us, in less than 2500 words, why light should remain at a constant speed regardless of your theoretical relative speed to the source.

THIS should confuse some members.... (me, probably)

EDIT: And I should emphasise WHY- quoting "Because Profs Einstein, Oppenheimer and Hawking say so..." does not count.

hehe

yes I do study physics...

Firstly one big part is the fact that the photon - a particle of 'light' is massless. All particles with mass cannot reach the speed of light. This is relativity.

It is basically because of regardless of whatever frame of reference, light can only travel at the speed of light, c (which is about 300000000 m/s)

If you travelled at 0.999c, you still have to see that light travelling at c away from you, yet a stationary observer still has to see the light travelling at 'c'

It is also due to time dilation, I think. The faster speed you travel at, the slower time 'feels'

If you go so fast, to you time will be like normal, but if you got on a spacecraft, went to say Pluto and back at a high speed (Very high) when you come back you would be a lot younger then the people you left behind...

Actually that would work too (other then you couldn't get to Pluto)

people who cross the Atlantic in a Jet/Fast Hovercraft are younger then people of the same birth time (okay we are talking a fraction of a second)

Yes, TFM...

I can quote the same sources... But it is WHY this is so that is the issue... If you were to take relatively slow objects such as an LD ferry going North on the DCITSE and a SC ferry going South on the DCITSE and a PO ferry sitting moored up awaing its single passenger....

Then CLEARLY the relative speeds are indesputable. Yet, when speeds are much greater, one talks of time distortions...

So, I wonder... In the same way that through the ages, when something doesn't make sense, scientists 'bolt on' an addition to the theory as a 'fudge'... Will this be found to be the same with this current relative theory?

technically time distortions occur at even the slowest of speed, it is just they are so small they are neglected in most calculations

I KNOW that, TFM....

I also understand that gravity affects time, making it appear faster... so does that mean if a species living in a high gravity region of space has had time occurring faster, that they have had XYZ more evolution time than us and could be well ahead of us technologically.

(perhaps a silly point, but it illustrates the possibilities)

I think it would go he other away

for example, 1 year would be 10 Earth Years

so for the 35-thousand Earth years of Human Evolution, it would be just 3500 years

Of course to get anything like that would require a VERY strong Gravity source
