I assume that it is there so that if the sea came into the bridge area during rough weather then the platform that the person on the wheel stands on would not be awash and would give him a steady footing?

Regards, Dave

My Uncle Earn was a Master Boat Builder. I remember him calling those hatches "drainage". So, I reckon that's right,

Ahoy Denis,
I really don't know how to do this. Anyhow, here they are. Due to a lot of building construction around the berth of the Elbe I was'nt able to come any closer. Sorry about that :'(

Ahoy Nathan|C,
Yes, she is, and so is the Mississippi on the background.

Hi aad, sorry to bring this up again.

I know Clyde has been turned into a Yacht, and the Elbe is being restored, but what happened to the Mississippi?

Ahoy Nathan|C,
As far as I know the Mississippi is converted into razorblades, automobiles etc. In other words: She's demolished :'( :'( :'(

Got more Info about the Mississippi. She was sold in 1984 to Taiwan for demolishing. There was a fourth sister too. The Thames. She is converted to a Yacht and still sailing under the name Itasca.

I visited the Elbe and Furie last week in Maasluis, i'll post the pictures here when i get back to my home in Germany. Aad, i saw a ship called the Hudson in Maasluis too, it looked like a mini Elbe, do you have any history on it?

Ahoy Nathan,
Nice to hear about Your visit to Maassluis. Love to see Your pictures (soon). Your home in Germany confused me a bit. Your profile shows You're from the UK ???
Anyhow, about the Hudson: I searched for info and found a lot on hhtp://museumschiphudson.com , alas, that site is in Dutch only. Translated some higlights for You:
The Motor Tug Hudson was build in 1939, launched on april, 15th 1939, ready for sail at july, 3rd 1939 ready for her maidentrip. Left Maassluis on april, 16th 1940 for the last time before WWII reached Holland and escaped barely to Great Britain. In 1945, after beeing away for 66 month she returned to Holland.
After several other dutys, like beeing an icescratch (that stuff being used to cool meat and vegetables prior to the refrigarator) factory, she was ment to be scraped in 1988, but the "Help the Hudson" Foundation was able to save her and finally brought her back to Maassluis where she is now a floating museum. To my knowledge there are no plans to make here sail again.
Regards
Aad
BTW, there are some programs which can translate complete websites for You, like babylon.
